Straight Round the Twist: Frustration and Chirality in Smectics-A
Frustration is a powerful mechanism in condensed matter systems, driving both
order and co plexity. In smectics, the frustration between macroscopic
chirality and equally spaced layers generates textures characterised by a
proliferation of defects. In this article, we study several different ground
states of the chiral Landau-de Gennes free energy for a smectic liquid crystal.
The standard theory finds the twist grain boundary (TGB) phase to be the ground
state for chiral type II smectics. However, for very highly chiral systems, the
hierarchical helical nanofilament (HN) phase can form and is stable over the

The Power of Poincar\'e: Elucidating the Hidden Symmetries in Focal Conic Domains
Focal conic domains are typically the "smoking gun" by which smectic liquid
crystalline phases are identified. The geometry of the equally-spaced smectic
layers is highly generic but, at the same time, difficult to work with. In this
Letter we develop an approach to the study of focal sets in smectics which
exploits a hidden Poincar\'e symmetry revealed only by viewing the smectic
layers as projections from one-higher dimension. We use this perspective to
shed light upon several classic focal conic textures, including the concentric
cyclides of Dupin, polygonal textures and tilt-grain boundaries.Comment: 4 pages, 3 included figure
Constraints on Embeddings
We show that the embedding of either a static or a time dependent maximally
3-symmetric brane with non-zero spatial curvature into a non-compactified
bulk does not yield exponential suppression of the geometry away from
the brane. Implications of this result for brane-localized gravity are

Current and future graphics requirements for LaRC and proposed future graphics system
The findings of an investigation to assess the current and future graphics requirements of the LaRC researchers with respect to both hardware and software are presented. A graphics system designed to meet these requirements is proposed
SMP: A solid modeling program
A prototype solid modeling program, SMP, developed by CSC for Langley Research Center (LaRC) is documented in this paper. The SMP software is employed by the System and Experiments Branch (SEB) of the Space Systems Division (SSD) for preliminary space station design, but is intended as a general purpose tool. The SMP document provides details concerning: the basic geometric modeling primitives and associated operators, the data representation scheme utilized to structure the geometric model, the available commands for both editing and displaying the solid model, the interactive user interface and the input/output interfaces to external software, and the utility of the package in the LaRC computing environment. The document is sufficiently detailed to serve both as a user's guide and reference manual

Results of an aqueous source term model for a radiological risk assessment of the Drigg LLW Site, U.K.
A radionuclide source term model has been developed which simulates the biogeochemical evolution of the Drigg low level waste (LLW) disposal site. The DRINK (DRIgg Near field Kinetic) model provides data regarding radionuclide concentrations in groundwater over a period of 100,000 years, which are used as input to assessment calculations for a groundwater pathway. The DRINK model also provides input to human intrusion and gaseous assessment calculations through simulation of the solid radionuclide inventory. These calculations are being used to support the Drigg post closure safety case. The DRINK model considers the coupled interaction of the effects of fluid flow, microbiology, corrosion, chemical reaction, sorption and radioactive decay. It represents the first direct use of a mechanistic reaction-transport model in risk assessment calculations
