Screening of antimicrobial compound from the sea slug Armina babai
Different solvents such as acetone, butanol, ethanol, hexane and methanol of Sea slug Armina babai was evaluated for its biomedical properties. Most potent extracts were purified using silica gel column and the active fractions were characterized by TLC, SDS-PAGE and FTIR. Maximum zone of inhibition was recorded against Pseudomonas sp., and minimum zone of inhibition was recorded against Proteus mirabilis by butanol extracts. TLC profiling with Rf value 0.82 indicating the presence of amino acids and peptides. Total protein was estimated as 21.36% with molecular weight range between 13 and 72 kDa in SDS-PAGE. The FT-IR spectrum of fractions, obtained from sea slug, reveals characteristic functional groups range between 465.75 and 3423.82 cm-1. Thus the obtained results indicate the presence of potent antimicrobial compounds in sea slug A. babai may pave the way to explore the potential development of new compounds to be launched in the pharmaceutical filling
First discovery of porcellanid crab, Porcellanella picta (Crustacea: Decapoda: Porcellanidae), from south-east coast of India
Studies of the distribution of any marine organism are very important in determining the range of its expansion in the oceans and to determine the factors influencing this expansion. This study reports for the first time the occurrence of the crab Porcellanella picta (Crustacea, Anomura, Porcellanidae) in the Point Calimere coastal region of southeastern India. All the specimens found were sexually mature. This crab occurs only rarely on the Indian coast and this observation expands its known range, recording a second distributional area for the species and significantly extending its range on the southeast coast of India
Expansão da ocorrência de caranguejos da costa oeste para a costa sudeste da Índia doi: 10.5007/2175-7925.2010v23n4p163

In the present study two species of crabs, Cryptopodia fornicata and Cryptopodia angulata (Crustacea, Brachyura, Parthenopidae) were reported for the first time in the Point Calimere coastal region, Southeast Coast of India. All the specimens were found to be sexually mature. This is the rare occurrence of these two bat crabs in Indian Coast which expands in its known range. In the present observation records a second distributional area of the species and signifi cantly extends the range from the West coast to the Southeast coast of India.
First discovery of Armina babai (Gastropoda, Nudibranchia, Arminoidea) from southeast coast of India
In this study, Armina babai (Tchang-Si, 1934) belonging to the family Arminidae collected off the Southeast coast of India at depths of 180–250 m in the muddy bottom is reported for the first time in India. The number of notal ridges, the position of the genital papilla, the size and the shape of radular teeth, and the features of the masticatory process are the main differences to the congeneric species occurring in the South Indian coast
Antimicrobial peptides from the hemolymph of the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii
The study was carried out to find the antimicrobial activity of hemolymph of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and to evaluate the antimicrobial compounds. The highest inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus vulgaris and Klebsiella pneumonia (12 mm) and antifungal activity was observed only against Fusarium moniliforme (11 mm). Antimicrobial peptide was characterized in molecular size ranging from 22 to 91KDa with antimicrobial activity against various infectious pathogens. Hemolymph plays a vital role in the disease prevention in crustaceans and there is no report on antimicrobial activities of the prawn M. rosenbergii
