Magnetic glass in Shape Memory Alloy : Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12
The first order martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic shape memory
alloy Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 is also a magnetic transition and has a large field
induced effect. While cooling in the presence of field this first order
magnetic martensite transition is kinetically arrested. Depending on the
cooling field, a fraction of the arrested ferromagnetic austenite phase
persists down to the lowest temperature as a magnetic glassy state, similar to
the one observed in various intermetallic alloys and in half doped manganites.
A detailed investigation of this first order ferromagnetic austenite (FM-A) to
low magnetization martensite (LM-M) state transition as a function of
temperature and field has been carried out by magnetization measurements.
Extensive cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) measurements and a novel
field cooled protocol for isothermal MH measurements (FC-MH) are utilized to
investigate the glass like arrested states and show a reverse martensite
transition. Finally, we determine a field -temperature (HT) phase diagram of
Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 from various magnetization measurements which brings out the
regions where thermodynamic and metastable states co-exist in the HT space
clearly depicting this system as a 'Magnetic Glass'.Comment: Magnetic field tunes kinetic arrest and CHUF shows devitrification

The Statistical Mechanics of the (2+1)-Dimensional Black Hole
The presence of a horizon breaks the gauge invariance of (2+1)-dimensional
general relativity, leading to the appearance of new physical states at the
horizon. I show that the entropy of the (2+1)-dimensional black hole can be
obtained as the logarithm of the number of these microscopic states.Comment: 12 pages, UCD-94-32 and NI-9401
Prayers to KÄli: practicing radical numinosity
Prayers to KÄli is an invocation of the radical-sacred as a way into decolonization, liberation, and healing. The radical-sacred, as I conceive of it, is broadly to do with the work of retrieving our spiritual dimensions as an inextricable part of queer, and decolonial futurities. The construction and performance of decolonial, queer-feminist theory, and knowledge discourses as fundamentally located in communities of coalition, new modes of resistance and cosmologies, form the theoretical foil of this paper. The broader aim of the paper is to highlight the significance of spiritual, corporeal, and emotional knowledges in the work of decoloniality and dismantling systems of oppression. I locate this exploration within the narrative specifics of contemporary spirit- poetry from Tamil Nadu; a radical, border site where these connections and dimensions of decoloniality, gender, desire, and resistance play out
Beyond series expansions: mathematical structures for the susceptibility of the square lattice Ising model
We first study the properties of the Fuchsian ordinary differential equations
for the three and four-particle contributions and
of the square lattice Ising model susceptibility. An analysis of some
mathematical properties of these Fuchsian differential equations is sketched.
For instance, we study the factorization properties of the corresponding linear
differential operators, and consider the singularities of the three and
four-particle contributions and , versus the
singularities of the associated Fuchsian ordinary differential equations, which
actually exhibit new ``Landau-like'' singularities. We sketch the analysis of
the corresponding differential Galois groups. In particular we provide a
simple, but efficient, method to calculate the so-called ``connection
matrices'' (between two neighboring singularities) and deduce the singular
behaviors of and . We provide a set of comments and
speculations on the Fuchsian ordinary differential equations associated with
the -particle contributions and address the problem of the
apparent discrepancy between such a holonomic approach and some scaling results
deduced from a Painlev\'e oriented approach.Comment: 21 pages Proceedings of the Counting Complexity conferenc
On the asymptotics of higher-dimensional partitions
We conjecture that the asymptotic behavior of the numbers of solid
(three-dimensional) partitions is identical to the asymptotics of the
three-dimensional MacMahon numbers. Evidence is provided by an exact
enumeration of solid partitions of all integers <=68 whose numbers are
reproduced with surprising accuracy using the asymptotic formula (with one free
parameter) and better accuracy on increasing the number of free parameters. We
also conjecture that similar behavior holds for higher-dimensional partitions
and provide some preliminary evidence for four and five-dimensional partitions.Comment: 30 pages, 8 tables, 4 figures (v2) New data (63-68) for solid

Domain Organization of Long Signal Peptides of Single-Pass Integral Membrane Proteins Reveals Multiple Functional Capacity
Targeting signals direct proteins to their extra - or intracellular destination such as the plasma membrane or cellular organelles. Here we investigated the structure and function of exceptionally long signal peptides encompassing at least 40 amino acid residues. We discovered a two-domain organization (âNtraC modelâ) in many long signals from vertebrate precursor proteins. Accordingly, long signal peptides may contain an N-terminal domain (N-domain) and a C-terminal domain (C-domain) with different signal or targeting capabilities, separable by a presumably turn-rich transition area (tra). Individual domain functions were probed by cellular targeting experiments with fusion proteins containing parts of the long signal peptide of human membrane protein shrew-1 and secreted alkaline phosphatase as a reporter protein. As predicted, the N-domain of the fusion protein alone was shown to act as a mitochondrial targeting signal, whereas the C-domain alone functions as an export signal. Selective disruption of the transition area in the signal peptide impairs the export efficiency of the reporter protein. Altogether, the results of cellular targeting studies provide a proof-of-principle for our NtraC model and highlight the particular functional importance of the predicted transition area, which critically affects the rate of protein export. In conclusion, the NtraC approach enables the systematic detection and prediction of cryptic targeting signals present in one coherent sequence, and provides a structurally motivated basis for decoding the functional complexity of long protein targeting signals
