    A Comprehensive Modeling and Simulation of Power Quality Disturbances Using MATLAB/SIMULINK

    This book chapter presents a comprehensive set of MATLAB/Simulink models used to simulate various power quality disturbances. The models presented include distribution line fault, induction motor starting, and transformer energizing that are used to simulate various types of voltage sag event. Capacitor bank switching model used to simulate oscillatory transient event, lightning impulse model used to simulate impulsive transient event, nonlinear load models used to simulate triplen harmonic and voltage notching disturbances generated from the load side, and lastly electric arc furnace model used to simulate flicker disturbance are also presented. This chapter presents each power quality disturbance in MATLAB/Simulink model. The presented models are used to simulate various power quality disturbances and waveforms for power quality analysis research as well as contribute to the development of power quality education and learning curriculum

    A multi-control vehicle-to-grid charger with bi-directional active and reactive power capabilities for power grid support

    This paper proposes a multi-control vehicle-to-grid charger with bi-directional power capability. The proposed charger can perform vehicle battery charging and discharging operations, as well as power grid support such as reactive power compensation, power factor correction, and grid voltage regulation. The performances of the charger controls were examined under various power grid scenarios. Results revealed that the vehicle-to-grid charger attained the highest charger efficiency when operating at unity power factor mode. Nevertheless, vehicle charging at unity power factor introduced a significant grid voltage drop which may violate the grid voltage limits. This problem was solved by using the voltage control, which injected reactive power to the power grid for accurate voltage regulation. This paper also proposed an autonomous multi-control selection algorithm to intelligently switch between the multiple charger controls in response to the power grid condition. Results showed that the proposed algorithm effectively instructed the charger to work in efficient control modes if the grid voltage was within the permissible voltage limits. Whenever the grid voltage exceeded the limits, the charger automatically switched to grid voltage control for power grid voltage regulation

    Developing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Energy Trading Model for Malaysia:A Review and Proposed Implementation

    A decade ago, Malaysia introduced the Renewable Energy Act 2011. This led to the RE proliferation, especially with the adoption of solar photovoltaics as an alternative energy source for prosumers to generate green energy and reduce their energy costs. Since then, the RE policies have evolved with the introduction of feed-in tariff (FiT) and various version of Net Energy Metering (NEM) schemes. Such initiatives may not be holistic enough to benefit all stakeholders; thus, Malaysia introduced its first pilot P2P energy trading in 2019. However, there was no significant progress to the P2P pilot thereafter, with a Go-to-Market plan. As such, this review proposes a model for P2P energy trading for Malaysia based on several key success factors including the market design, trading mechanism, physical and virtual infrastructure, policy and governance and social. Malaysia's electricity market structure is also compared to South Korea, Germany, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Singapore (ranked in the top 20 Ease of Getting Electricity by World Bank in 2019) to understand the implication of P2P energy trading adoption. Apart from that, this paper also highlights the key technical and non-technical reviews of the P2P energy trading implementation.</p

    Boundary detection and enhancement strategy for power system bus bar stabilization:investigation under fault conditions for islanding operation

    Distribution systems can form islands when faults occur. Each island represents a subsection with variable boundaries subject to the location of fault(s) in the system. A subsection with variable boundaries is referred to as an island in this paper. For operation in autonomous mode, it is imperative to detect the island configurations and stabilize these subsections. This paper presents a novel scheme for the detection of island boundaries and stabilizing the system during autonomous operation. In the first stage, a boundary detection method is proposed to detect the configuration of the island. In the second stage, a dynamic voltage sensitivity factor (DVSF) is proposed to assess the dynamic performance of the system. In the third stage, a wide area load shedding program is adopted based on DVSF to shed the load in weak bus-bars and stabilize the system.     Performance analysis of DC/DC bidirectional converter with sliding mode and pi controller

    A sliding mode controller for a non-isolated DC/DC, bidirectional converter is presented and comparative study with PI controller is done along with ISE analysis, in order to do performance analysis. The proposed system can be utilized in many applications such as electrical vehicle, distributed power generation or small grids. Second theorem of Lyapunov is utilized and stability of the closed loop system is mathematically proven. The adopted control strategy achieves effective output voltage regulation and good dynamic stability. Rejection of disturbance is also an inherent characteristic of this technique. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the system can successfully follow changes of load demand and compensates sudden disturbances in operating condition. The design is evaluated and verified using Matlab/Simulink. Results of Matlab simulation are provided to show the feasibility of the proposed system and effectiveness of control method. Simulation results show that this technique can provide a considerable edge over control techniques which are presently available (applied) over this type of converter

    The automobile companies are focusing on recent technologies such as growing Hydrogen (H2) and Fuel Cell (FC) Vehicular Power Train (VPT) to improve the Tank-To-Wheel (TTW) efficiency. Benefits, the lower cost, `Eco\u27 friendly, zero-emission and high-power capacity, etc. In the power train of fuel cell vehicles, the DC-DC power converters play a vital role to boost the fuel cell stack voltage. Hence, satisfy the demand of the motor and transmission in the vehicles. Several DC-DC converter topologies have proposed for various vehicular applications like fuel cell, battery, and renewable energy fed hybrid vehicles etc. Most cases, the DC-DC power converters are viable and cost-effective solutions for FC-VPT with reduced size and increased efficiency. This article describes the state-of-the-art in unidirectional non-isolated DC-DC Multistage Power Converter (MPC) topologies for FC-VPT application. The paper presented the comprehensive review, comparison of different topologies and stated the suitability for different vehicular applications. This article also discusses the DC-DC MPC applications more specific to the power train of a small vehicle to large vehicles (bus, trucks etc.). Further, the advantages and disadvantages pointed out with the prominent features for converters. Finally, the classification of the DC-DC converters, its challenges, and applications for FC technology is presented in the review article as state-of-the-art in research

    Optimal SSSC-based power damping inter-area oscillations using firefly and harmony search algorithms

    The static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) can add a series reactance to the transmission line, and when it is fed using auxiliary signals, it can participate in damping inter-area oscillations by changing the series reactance. In this paper, the effect of the SSSC on small-signal stability is investigated. The design of a controller for damping oscillations is designed and discussed. Moreover, using the firefly and the harmony search algorithms, the optimal parameters controlling SSSC are addressed. The effectiveness of these two algorithms and the rate of SSSC participation in damping inter-area oscillation are also discussed. MATLAB software was used to analyse the models and to perform simulations in the time domain. The simulation results on the sample system, in two areas, indicated the optimal accuracy and precision of the proposed controller
