    Irony's architecture: Reflections on a photographic research project

    This paper presents a research approach based on irony, rather than certainty. Using Richard Rorty's conception of irony, we contend that much traditional research in management presents a final language which is implicit in both the construction of a research method and its final presentation as findings. This paper suggests we should take irony more seriously, and deliberately construct research to allow and encourage re-description by our research's final arbiters - its readers, and even its subjects. Further, we advocate that by inviting irony into our work, we encourage greater identification between ourselves, our audience of readers, and the subjects of our work. We illustrate our argument by reflecting on a recent photographic research project which was a collaborative effort between management researchers and an artist. We show how the simple architecture of this project was built from doubt and how irony is communicated through the pictures. We then show how photography can be a useful technique that encourages readers to engage in re-description of petit récits (small stories), told through images. We discuss our reflections by focusing on the implications of our research for management education

    Price Squeezes and Imputation Tests on Next Generation Access Networks

    A vertically integrated firm that wholesales to its retail rivals can, if it has sufficient market power, set the margin between its retail and wholesale prices so as to harm its rivals. Conventionally, an imputation test is used to determine whether such behavior is being undertaken. Such tests are common in electronic communications, and the EC calls for their potentially intensive ex ante application in the supply of NGANs. This paper shows that while imputation tests are helpful analytical tools for understanding the nature of price squeezes, difficulties associated with implementation, which are sharp in an NGAN context, can make them misleading in practice. Instead, price squeezes are best dealt with through the rigorous comparison of expected outcomes, given the alleged anticompetitive behavior, with the outcomes expected in that behavior’s absence.     Management of plant health risks associated with processing of plant-based wastes: A review

    The rise in international trade of plants and plant products has increased the risk of introduction and spread of plant pathogens and pests. In addition, new risks are arising from the implementation of more environmentally friendly methods of biodegradable waste disposal, such as composting and anaerobic digestion. As these disposal methods do not involve sterilisation, there is good evidence that certain plant pathogens and pests can survive these processes. The temperature/time profile of the disposal process is the most significant and easily defined factor in controlling plant pathogens and pests. In this review, the current evidence for temperature/time effects on plant pathogens and pests is summarised. The advantages and disadvantages of direct and indirect process validation for the verification of composting processes, to determine their efficacy in destroying plant pathogens and pests in biowaste, are discussed. The availability of detection technology and its appropriateness for assessing the survival of quarantine organisms is also reviewed

    Mechanistic investigation of halopentaaquachromium(III) complexes: Comparison of computational and experimental results

    The mechanism for the substitution reactions of halopentaaquachromium(III) complexes in the series, [CrX(H2O)5]2+, where X = F−, Cl−, Br−, or I− have been investigated using density functional theory. Several different mechanistic pathways were explored including associative interchange (Ia), dissociative (D) and the associatively activated dissociation mechanisms (Da). The lowest overall activation enthalpy (ΔH‡) obtained for the fluoride system is for the Ia pathway, with immediate proton abstraction leading to the formation of HF and the conjugate base. For the chloride, bromide and iodide systems the Da pathway has the lowest ΔH‡ values. Activation enthalpies determined at the PBE0/cc-pVDZ level, in aqueous solution (PCM), are in excellent agreement with the experimental results (MAD is 1.0 kJ mol−1).
