Personality of mothers of substance-dependent patients
Drug addicts often come from dysfunctional families. The prevailing view in the literature is that mothers of drug-dependent patients can be characterized by strong emotional bonds and overprotection. Studies suggest that maternal rejection could be a major risk factor of developing drug addiction. This work is a continuation of our previous study of childhood parenting experiences of substance-dependent patients. The aims were to compare the personality profile of mothers of substance-dependent patients and that of mothers of matched control subjects; and to examine the relation between the personality of mothers of addicts, and severity of their offspring’s addiction. The study group consisted of 20 mothers of substance-dependent patients and a control group of 35 mothers of non-dependent subjects; mothers of both groups were age matched. Patients were diagnosed according to DSM IV criteria. Personalities of mothers of both groups were assessed using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Substance-dependent patients (sons) were administered the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). The mean scores of the MMPI Scales were higher for mothers of dependent patients compared to mothers of non-dependent subjects. Scores on the depression, hysteria and paranoia scales were significantly higher for mothers of patients (P = 0.03, 0.02, and 0.03, respectively). There was a significant positive correlation between scores of hysteria, and psychopathic deviance and the ASI (P = 0.03 and 0.01, respectively). There were significant negative correlations between scores of social introversion and the ASI drug/alcohol use status (P = 0.007), and family history dimensions (P = 0.003). Mothers of substance-dependent patients showed disturbances in aspects of personalities that might be related to initiation of perpetuation of substance dependence
Laparotomic myomectomy for a huge cervical myoma in a young nulligravida woman: A case report and review of the literature
Background: A huge cervical myoma (rare) in a young woman is a nightmare of every gynecologist owing to the associated technical challenges in performing a myomectomy. Moreover, the 2014 US Food and Drug Administration prohibited power morcellation during laparoscopic myomectomy due to the inadvertent spread of occult malignancy and an increased risk of iatrogenic parasitic leiomyoma negatively affected the overall rate of a minimally invasive surgery.
Case: This report described our experience with a case of a huge anterior cervical myoma (473 gr) in a young nulligravida woman who successfully underwent laparotomic myomectomy. After an initial diagnosis by Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we performed preoperative ureteric catheterization. The myoma was enucleated following the footsteps of Victor Bonney, the pioneer of myomectomy, combined with simple additional steps. We did not use preoperative gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog, intraoperative vasopressin injection, or uterine artery ligation. A 6-month follow-up MRI revealed an intact cervical canal in midline position with no evidence of residual fibroid.
Conclusion: Based on our experience, the review of the relevant literature, and the US Food and Drug Administration's prohibition of power morcellation during laparoscopic myomectomy, a laparotomic myomectomy for a huge cervical myoma still plays a vital role in fertility preservation. We propose the mnemonic "MUSIC" as a helpful guide for a consistent strategy: M (preoperative MRI), U (prophylactic ureteric catheterization), S (shell out the myoma following Bonney's principles i.e. start-up and stay intracapsular), I (immediate suction to clarify dead space) and C (close the cavity by spiraling stitch).

Penetrating chest trauma: A prospective study of prognostic factors for worse outcome after emergency surgery
Background: Even though chest penetrating injuries are common as well as challenging to treat, most of the time they can be dealt without surgery. This study aimed to evaluate contemporary outcome following emergent surgical interventions for penetrating chest trauma and possible factors associated with poor prognosis.
Methods: This prospective study included 100 cases admitted to benha university hospital with either Stab Wound or Gunshot wound to the chest, with systolic blood pressure ≤90 mmHg and who underwent through Thoracotomy or sternotomy within duration of one hour of arrival.
Results: This study included 81 patients (77 stabbings, 4 gunshots) underwent a thoracotomy and 19 underwent median sternotomy within 60 minutes after the penetrating trauma, the mean period of surgery was 3 ±0.9, There were 94 male and 6 female cases and their mean age was 25 ±10.14 years, the mean Intensive care unit stay was 2 ±0.83 days in addition mean hospital stay was 6 ±1.06 days, the individuals who died had trauma at mid-clavicular line of the chest (100%) compared to survivors (5.5%), lesser systolic blood pressure on presentation in the emergency room (71 ±11 mmHg) equated with those who survived (90 ±9 mmHg, P<0.001) and lower hemoglobin level (6.4 ±0.5) compared with those who survived (8.4 ±1, P<0.001). As a whole, the mortality rate was 9% (n=9). individuals' Death Rates with stab wounds was 5/96 (5.2%) compared with 4/4 (100%) for patients with gunshot wounds. Right ventricular injury (P=0.03) was associated with mortality.
Conclusion: Early referral, within one hour, to emergency surgery results in acceptable postoperative mortality in patients with penetrating chest trauma. Anterior location of injury, initial hemodynamic instability, and gunshot wounds associated with poor prognosis
Teen Dating Violence among Italian High School Students: A Quantitative Study on Gender Differences
Healthy relationships involve trust, integrity, respect, and cooperation. Unfortunately, teen dating violence is a serious problem and there has been a consensus that it has severe consequences on the victims’ physical and psychological health. It can negatively influence the development of healthy
sexuality, intimacy, and identity of adolescents as they transition into adulthood. This study examined the gender differences in teen dating violence among 336 Italian adolescent students from four secondary schools in Reggio Emilia, aged 14 to 20 years. The study used questionnaires for data collection and the results revealed that both genders have a significantly greater acceptance of control behavior when compared to their acceptance of aggressive behavior. In addition, boys accepted interpersonal violence more than girls. A Significant high percentage of girls reported victimization, with physical, emotional, and threatening violence perpetrated more against them. Most of the teens were aware of TDV among peers, and an experience of TDV was among the causal attributions mentioned. Others reported the fear of losing a partner and reaction to a provoking behavior. The recommendations drawn included the importance of addressing masculinity models that see aggressiveness as part of their gender identity and the relevance of raising awareness of control behaviors as antecedents of teen dating violence
