In this paper it is critically review the economic literature on the effects of environmental changes on public health ,in both the developed and the developing wolrd. The first focus on the economic methodologies that are available for the evaluation of the effects of environmental changes on public health .Then it explain how the monetary valuations of these effects can feed back in the construction of economic policy for creating agent specific incentives for more efficient public management, which is also equitable and environmentally sustainable. Every minute, five children in developing countries die from malaria or diarrhoea. Every hour, 100 children die as a result of exposure to indoor smoke from solid fuels. Every day, nearly 1,800 people in developing cities die as a result of exposure to urban air pollution. Every month, nearly 19,000 people in developing countries die from unintentional poisonings

Meshless Analysis of Radio Frequency Microelectromechanical Systems Shunt Switch

    Get PDF
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have found applications in defence as well as in civilian sectors. Analysis of MEMS devices require complex 3-D meshes due to the presence of mechanical and electrostatic energy domains. On the other hand, meshless methods do not require the generation of mesh and perform the computational analysis by just sprinkling the points covering the domain. In this paper, meshless analysis of MEMS switches based on reproducing kernel particle method is reported. Numerical results for the static analysis of the switch are compared with the simulated results obtained using  INTELLISUITE MEMS CAD tool.Defence Science Journal, 2009, 59(6), pp.622-626, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.59.156

Pattern of Parental Handling in Children with Emotional and Behavioural Disorders - A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract                                       The role of biological and social parents in shaping the mental and physical health of a child has been well-documented. Researchers over the years have developed typologies that categorize parental behaviour into prototypes and also examined their influence on the developmental outcome. Parenting styles are often considered a characteristic of the parent which is independent of the characteristics of the developing child while parenting behaviour is considered bidirectional and influenced by early childhood or infant behaviour. An overwhelming body of evidence indicates the close relationship between parenting and childhood behaviour, as well as on the effect of various modifying factors including physiology, parental mental health, cultural differences, ethinicity, and societal factors. Cross-cultural studies in the field have so far been limited largely to developed countries even as the subject is highly relevant to developing economies with their over-stretched mental healthcare systems. The objectives of this study is to determine patterns of parental handling in children with emotional and behavioural disorders consulting the child & adolescent psychiatry clinic in a tertiary care centre, and to determine the correlation of parental handling patterns to the child’s behavioural and emotional symptoms. The present study endeavours to determine the parenting pattern among parents of children utilizing psychiatric services at a tertiary care centre in Kerala, South India

Draft bills and research reports on: reducing judicial corruption and child labor in Nepal

These two draft bills and accompanying research report comprise the work of two teams of Nepali officials from Nepal's Ministry of Law and Justice who prepared them in the context of the Boston University School of Law Program on Legislative Drafting for Democratic Social Change. They attended that Program as part of a larger Ministry of Law and Justice Program, funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to strengthen Nepal's legal framework and the Rule of Law. Using the bills and reports as case studies, the four officials aimed to learn legislative theory, methodology and techniques. The Ministry had assigned them, on their return to Nepal, to play a significant role in institutionalizing an on-going learning process to strengthen Nepali drafters' capacity to prepare the effectively implementable legislation necessary to ensure good governance and development

A Policy Review of Public Libraries in India

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the status of policies, legislation and finance with respect to public libraries in India. Design/methodology/approach This is a descriptive study based on data collected from literature review and census data on public libraries, along with a field visit of government public libraries at Bangalore. It attempts a critique of existing policies related to public libraries in particular and the culture sector in general, which governs the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAMs) in India. Findings Of India’s 29 states and 7 union territories, 19 states have passed state library legislations, of which only 5 have the provision of a library cess or tax levy and it was found that states with lower literacy rates do not have library legislations. Bihar and Chhattisgarh in 2008 and Arunachal Pradesh in 2009 have recently passed these legislations without a library cess. Few states have progressed with the automation of public libraries, while 16 state libraries continue to function without any such legislation. The legislative process and legal issues involved in policy making, combined with the lack of political consensus and goodwill, have severely constrained the growth, coverage and development of public libraries for people in India. The existing national acts and state library legislations should be reviewed to adapt to changing times and to bring about integrated information services across GLAMs for the public. A RTI query sent to the Ministry of Culture revealed that there is no official data available on the per capita expenditure on public libraries in India. Practical implications In an online-networked environment, all GLAM institutions work towards collecting, preserving and providing access to educational and cultural heritage resources as social capital. However, there is a lack of national policy to govern GLAMs and the government bodies responsible for developing GLAMs are not integrative in their processes. A more holistic framework is required to assess funding needs and to ensure reforms in culture sector. Central government should make it mandatory to have access to public library for every citizen of India, legitimating public library services, even as India celebrates 100 years of public librarianship and enters its second century of providing library and information services to the nation. Originality/value GLAMs should be inclusionary public spaces for intellectual engagement and community development and need greater attention of policy makers. Though the public library movement reached its peak in the nationalist movements of the early 20th century, developing integrated and contemporary policies for the growth and development of public libraries as a public good in the 21st century will make India a knowledge society

Background: The aim of the current study was to evaluate invitro anticancer activity of saponins of MC on EAC cells by using cytotoxicity (MTT) assay. To evaluate in vivo antiangiogenic potential of saponins of MC on rat air sac angiogenesis, EAC induced peritoneal angiogenesis, CAM angiogenesis. Methods: MTT assay was carried out at different concentrations of saponins of MC in 12 microliter plates containing media with EAC cells. In rat air sac angiogenesis, carrageenin was injected (s.c.) into the air sac. Dexamethasone, indomethacin, saponins of MC was administered to identify the angiogenic activity. In EAC induced angiogenesis in peritoneum, EAC cells were administered through i.p in mice peritoneum. 5-fluoro uracil, (i.p) and saponins of MC (orally) was given to identify angiogenic activity. In CAM angiogenesis, erythropoietin was given to eggs on 8th day of incubation. saponins were given on the 12th day for two days to observe the antiangiogenic activity. Results: The observed cytotoxic effects of saponins of MC on EAC cells find statistically significant. There is significant reduction in vascular branching in rat air sac model; EAC induced peritoneal angiogenesis, CAM model by the saponins of MC.Conclusions: Due to lack of certain records, it is envisaged that the change of medicine both discontinuation as well as addition was done because of blood glucose control, cost factor [in case of pioglitazone] as well as patient’s compliance
