PS-Sim: A Framework for Scalable Simulation of Participatory Sensing Data

Emergence of smartphone and the participatory sensing (PS) paradigm have paved the way for a new variant of pervasive computing. In PS, human user performs sensing tasks and generates notifications, typically in lieu of incentives. These notifications are real-time, large-volume, and multi-modal, which are eventually fused by the PS platform to generate a summary. One major limitation with PS is the sparsity of notifications owing to lack of active participation, thus inhibiting large scale real-life experiments for the research community. On the flip side, research community always needs ground truth to validate the efficacy of the proposed models and algorithms. Most of the PS applications involve human mobility and report generation following sensing of any event of interest in the adjacent environment. This work is an attempt to study and empirically model human participation behavior and event occurrence distributions through development of a location-sensitive data simulation framework, called PS-Sim. From extensive experiments it has been observed that the synthetic data generated by PS-Sim replicates real participation and event occurrence behaviors in PS applications, which may be considered for validation purpose in absence of the groundtruth. As a proof-of-concept, we have used real-life dataset from a vehicular traffic management application to train the models in PS-Sim and cross-validated the simulated data with other parts of the same dataset.Comment: Published and Appeared in Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP-2018

An Energy Efficient and High Speed Image Compression System Using Stationary Wavelet Transform

Image compression is one of the interesting domains nowadays in all areas of research. Everybody working with huge of amount of data in their daily life. In-order to deal with such huge amount of data, there is a need to store and compress the data. So there is a need to develop a system to compress and store the data. JPEG 2000 is a system to achieve this object. In this paper an area efficient and high speed JPEG2000 architecture has been developed to compress the image data. To implement JPEG2000 system, here a transform called stationary wavelet transform has been used. Stationary wavelet transform reduces the bottlenecks existing in the wavelet transform. Stationary wavelet transform avoids the problem of invariance-translation of the already existing discrete wavelet transform. The proposed stationary wavelet transform based JPEG2000 improves the speed and efficiency of power compared to the discrete wavelet transform based JPEG2000. Many image compression applications such as tele-medicine, satellite imaging, medical imaging require high-speed, low power compression techniques with small chip area. This paper has an analysis on the speed of JPEG2000 using stationary wavelet transform and it will be compared theoretically and practically with the JPEG2000 using discrete wavelet transform. The amount of information missing in the test image usually been very small when compared to the DWT based JPEG2000.The MSE and PSNR values proved to be better when compared to the DWT based JPEG2000. The proposed SWT based JPEG2000 compresses and decompresses the image at a faster rate than the DWT based JPEG2000.Finally the design will be implemented in XILINX Virtex-4 FPGA Kit. .The power consumption of the proposed method proved to be 290mW compared to other types of compression techniques

    CORTICOSTERIODS INDUCED ECCHYMOSIS

Corticosteroids are the steroid hormones which are mainly used in the treatment of various diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatic fever, gout, allergic reactions, renal diseases and haematological diseases. Prolonged use of corticosteroids causes a number of undesirable effects. Major adverse drug reaction (ADR's) includes ulcers/gastrointestinal bleeding, osteoporosis, increased risk of heart diseases and decreased in bone density. Here we report a case of male patient of 72years old who was confirmed with cervical osteoarthritis and using oral corticosteroid (OCS) (methylprednisolone) since 6 y. While the patient was on therapy ecchymosis was noticed. The relation between suspected drug and ADR was established by performing ADR assessment scale, whereas both de-challenge and re-challenge was done, and ADR assessment scales like Naranjo's scale, WHO UMC scales showed probable ADR, it can be managed by stopping the drug or using alternative days. Close monitoring of blood cortisol levels in a patient using oral corticosteroids (OCS) should be done

Optical materials based on molecular nano/microcrystals and ultrathin films

Methodologies that we developed recently for the fabrication of molecular crystals with size variation in the nano to micro regime and polyelectrolyte templated mono and multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett films, are reviewed. The electronic absorption and strong fluorescence in the molecular nano/microcrystals are found to be size-dependent. Crystal structure and computational investigations provide a unified model to explain these observations. Role of polyelectrolyte templating in achieving stable and enhanced optical second harmonic generation response from LB films based on a hemicyanine amphiphile is highlighted

Sturm\u27s theorems for generalized derivative and generalized Sturm--Liouville problem

The present paper defines the Sturm separation and Sturm comparison theorems for the generalized derivative. The generalized derivative is defined with respect to weight function and another function. Further, we define the generalized Sturm--Liouville problem (GSLP) and analyze the properties of GSLP such that the eigenvalues of GSLP are real, and for distinct eigenvalues, the associated eigenfunctions are orthogonal. Moreover, using variational approach, we show that GSLP has an infinite eigenvalues
