Maximum Likelihood Decoder for Index Coded PSK Modulation for Priority Ordered Receivers
Index coded PSK modulation over an AWGN broadcast channel, for a given index
coding problem (ICP) is studied. For a chosen index code and an arbitrary
mapping (of broadcast vectors to PSK signal points), we have derived a decision
rule for the maximum likelihood (ML) decoder. The message error performance of
a receiver at high SNR is characterized by a parameter called PSK Index Coding
Gain (PSK-ICG). The PSK-ICG of a receiver is determined by a metric called
minimum inter-set distance. For a given ICP with an order of priority among the
receivers, and a chosen -PSK constellation we propose an algorithm to find
(index code, mapping) pairs, each of which gives the best performance in terms
of PSK-ICG of the receivers. No other pair of index code (of length with
broadcast vectors) and mapping can give a better PSK-ICG for the highest
priority receiver. Also, given that the highest priority receiver achieves its
best performance, the next highest priority receiver achieves its maximum gain
possible and so on in the specified order or priority.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures and 2 table
Distinguished representations, base change, and reducibility for unitary groups
We show the equality of the local Asai L-functions defined via the
Rankin-Selberg method and the Langlands-Shahidi method for a square integrable
representation of GL(n,E). As a consequence we characterise reducibility of
certain induced representations of U(n,n), and the image of the base change map
from U(n) to GL(n,E) in terms of GL(n,F)-distinguishedness.Comment: 13 page
Managing migration in the Philippines : lessons for India
This paper highlights the significance of international migration
in the Philippines economy and society, discusses the supportive and
regulatory role that the government of the Philippines plays in promoting
it and draws the lessons that India might learn from the Philippines
experience. Temporary labour migration to foreign countries is a policy
priority of the Government of the Philippines which restricts official
access to markets through recruitment by licensed agencies or the
government itself. The Government retains a regulatory role, though
most of the responsibility for recruiting workers is entrusted with the
private sector with a view to protecting workers from abuse and
discouraging illegal recruitment. International migrants receive several
benefits- pre migration training, life insurance, pensions and loan
facilities. Remittances are encouraged and investment programmes are
offered. Filipinos abroad are given psychological counselling to maintain
Filipino values and offered rights to vote in national elections. The
Philippines government also lends its support to return migrants through
tax-free shopping facilities, investment loans and subsidised scholarships.
The efforts of the government have yielded substantial results even
though short comings and failures do remain. The gains of government
policies however far outweigh their inadequencies.
India has several lessons to draw from the Philippines experiment
in order to organise systematic flows of emigrants from India, namely,
to take care of their working and living conditions abroad, to channel
emigrants' savings into productive uses, to promote welfare funds of
emigrant workers, to protect the interests of workers abroad during their
sojourn and after return, to offer intending emigrants pre-departure
orientation courses, to prevent all practices of breach of contract on the
part of recruitment agencies and foreign employers and to increase the
investment of Indian embassies in the affairs of Indian emigrants.

Shape memory thermal conduction switch
A thermal conduction switch includes a thermally-conductive first member having a first thermal contacting structure for securing the first member as a stationary member to a thermally regulated body or a body requiring thermal regulation. A movable thermally-conductive second member has a second thermal contacting surface. A thermally conductive coupler is interposed between the first member and the second member for thermally coupling the first member to the second member. At least one control spring is coupled between the first member and the second member. The control spring includes a NiTiFe comprising shape memory (SM) material that provides a phase change temperature <273 K, a transformation range <40 K, and a hysteresis of <10 K. A bias spring is between the first member and the second member. At the phase change the switch provides a distance change (displacement) between first and second member by at least 1 mm, such as 2 to 4 mm
Effectiveness of cinnamon chewing gum on memory and anxiety among adolescents at selected seventh day adventist high schools, Andhra Pradesh
Teenage years are the “best years of one’s life”. For many
college and high school students today, nothing is more agonizing than their poor
academic performance and anxiety. Our sense of smell plays a major role in
solving these problems. Objectives: To assess the level of memory and anxiety
among adolescents before and after cinnamon chewing gum. Design: True
Experimental design where one group pre test and post test with control group
design. Setting: Seventh Day Adventist High School, Vijayawada, Andhra
Pradesh. Participants: Adolescents who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Selection
criteria: Adolescents who were both male and female and studying 8th – 10th
standard were selected Methods: out of 30, 15 adolescents in control group and 15
adolescents in experimental group were selected by using stratified random
sampling technique. Pre and post test assessment was done by using modified
P.G.I memory assessment scale to assess memory and modified Max Hamilton’s
anxiety rating scale to assess anxiety. Results: Most of them were in the age group
of 13 and 14 years studying 9th standard. From the findings, in memory the mean
difference was 31% and in anxiety 22% in experimental group whereas in control
group memory 1% and anxiety 7%. Paired ‘t’test score in control group was 0.54
in memory and 1.86 in anxiety. In experimental group, paired ‘t’test score was
23.7 in memory and 17.2 in anxiety when compared to the level of significant
(p<0.05) it was high. Unpaired ‘t’ test score for memory was 18.6 and anxiety was
24.1. It seems that cinnamon chewing gum on memory and anxiety among
adolescents was effective. There was a moderately negative co-relation between
memory and anxiety which revealed that when the level of memory increased,
level of anxiety was decreased. There was no significant association between post
test scores on memory and anxiety in control and experimental group and their
demographic variables. Conclusion: Olfaction in human beings plays a major role
in recollecting memories and relaxation. The scent of cinnamon acts on the
cerebral cortex, boosting the brain function and as a tranquilizing agent in stress.
Clinical practice: To prove this study they need supportive research to be
warranted. Cinnamon can be used for type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis. This study
can be applied for Alzheimer’s patients in improving memory and stress in elderly
people
CYBER SECURITY SOLUTIONS FOR DLMS METERS USING GSM/GPRS TECHNOLOGY
The Smart meters are used in the areas of generation, transmission, distribution and consumption. The capabilities of smart meter systems and grid networks, such as distributed intelligence and broadband capabilities can greatly enhance efficiency and reliability, but they may also create much new vulnerability if not deployed with the appropriate security controls. Much of the technology currently in use by the meters are outdated and in many cases unreliable. A system architecture implementing should recognize security threats and capture events that result not from external threats but from internal mistakes, with human error being a more common occurrence. An effective security approach enhances reliability because some security failures might be people failures, while others might be equipment failures, might be due to natural causes or might be deliberate. A simple perimeter defense is not sufficient; monitoring, both for events and physical actions, is required to bring the benefits of smart meters with minimal risk to this vital part of the infrastructure of modern life
Near room-temperature colossal magnetodielectricity and multiglass properties in partially-disordered La2NiMnO6
We report magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric responses of pure
monoclinic bulk phase of partially-disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum
of unusual properties and establish that this system intrinsically is a true
multiglass with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8-20%) over a wide range of
temperatures (150 - 300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to
obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by
engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via
the tuning of the relative spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions
in a transition metal oxide system. We discuss the role of anti-site (Ni-Mn)
disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Slightly revised version of previous article in

Correlation between Oxidative Stress and Thyroid Function in Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome
Background. The present study is to look for a correlation between oxidative stress and thyroid function in patients with the nephrotic syndrome in the remission phase as well as in a persistent proteinuric state. Introduction. Nephrotic syndrome is a form of chronic kidney disease due to which blood loses protein through the urine. We wanted to know if there was an increased loss of thyroid hormones in urine affecting thyroid function. Methods. 60 patients with nephrotic syndrome and 20 healthy non-proteinuric individuals as control subjects were enrolled in the study. We measured their serum tri-iodothyronine, thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone. Estimation of lipid peroxidation (LPx) catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were carried out by standard methods. Results. TSH was elevated in the nephrotic patients compared to controls, while TT4 and TT3 were significantly lower in the patients than in controls. Lipid Peroxidation and GPx were significantly higher in the nephrotic syndrome patients than in the controls, while SOD and catalase were significantly lower than in patients than in the control subjects. Conclusion. Nephrotic patients can lose significant amounts of thyroid hormones along with protein in urine, which can affect thyroid status, but this is reversible on remission
In search of multipolar order on the Penrose tiling
Based on Monte Carlo calculations, multipolar ordering on the Penrose tiling,
relevant for two-dimensional molecular adsorbates on quasicrystalline surfaces
and for nanomagnetic arrays, has been analyzed. These initial investigations
are restricted to multipolar rotors of rank one through four - described by
spherical harmonics Ylm with l=1...4 and restricted to m=0 - positioned on the
vertices of the rhombic Penrose tiling. At first sight, the ground states of
odd-parity multipoles seem to exhibit long-range multipolar order, indicated by
the appearance of a superstructure in the form of the decagonal
Hexagon-Boat-Star tiling, in agreement with previous investigations of dipolar
systems. Yet careful analysis establishes that long-range multipolar order is
absent in all cases investigated here, and only short-range order exists. This
result should be taken as a warning for any future analysis of order in either
real or simulated arrangements of multipoles on quasiperiodic templates
