    A Comparative Analysis Among Indian Commercial Banks (Public & Private) and a Foreign Bank Using Var (Value-At-Risk) Model

    This research paper tries to assess the various types of risks prevalent in the banking sector using VaR (Value-at-Risk) model – a Risk assessment tool. As Value – at- Risk measures the probability that an asset is valued below a certain value during a particular time, a probabilistic approach is used to find the profitability. A comparative analysis is performed among the sample banks. Both the conventional methods and the new methods are used to evaluate the risk profile of the banks. The likelihood of occurrence of a particular value for an asset gives us the magnitude of risk involved in the corresponding asset of the bank. The VaR values which depend on market rates which are calculated for portfolios of various banks thus enabling us to differentiate various risk management practices prevalent among Indian Banks and a Foreign Bank. Factors which help in mitigating the risk are analyzed and their tolerance levels are put forth. Depending upon the confidence levels and considering worst case scenarios, financial institutions like banks are in constant search of tools to assess risk, which they might face in near future and to efficiently manage risk. This paper also provides an insight into the emerging risk management practices in the banking sector.     Asymptotic Performance of Linear Receivers in MIMO Fading Channels

    Linear receivers are an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the information-theoretic performance of MIMO linear receivers in two different asymptotic regimes. For fixed number of antennas, we investigate the limit of error probability in the high-SNR regime in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT). Following this, we characterize the error probability for fixed SNR in the regime of large (but finite) number of antennas. As far as the DMT is concerned, we report a negative result: we show that both linear Zero-Forcing (ZF) and linear Minimum Mean-Square Error (MMSE) receivers achieve the same DMT, which is largely suboptimal even in the case where outer coding and decoding is performed across the antennas. We also provide an approximate quantitative analysis of the markedly different behavior of the MMSE and ZF receivers at finite rate and non-asymptotic SNR, and show that while the ZF receiver achieves poor diversity at any finite rate, the MMSE receiver error curve slope flattens out progressively, as the coding rate increases. When SNR is fixed and the number of antennas becomes large, we show that the mutual information at the output of a MMSE or ZF linear receiver has fluctuations that converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable, whose mean and variance can be characterized in closed form. This analysis extends to the linear receiver case a well-known result previously obtained for the optimal receiver. Simulations reveal that the asymptotic analysis captures accurately the outage behavior of systems even with a moderate number of antennas.Comment: 48 pages, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor

    Performance of MMSE MIMO Receivers: A Large N Analysis for Correlated Channels

    Linear receivers are considered as an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the performance of MMSE MIMO receivers in the limit of large antenna numbers in the presence of channel correlations. Using the replica method, we generalize our results obtained in arXiv:0810.0883 to Kronecker-product correlated channels and calculate the asymptotic mean and variance of the mutual information of a MIMO system of parallel MMSE subchannels. The replica method allows us to use the ties between the optimal receiver mutual information and the MMSE SIR of Gaussian inputs to calculate the joint moments of the SIRs of the MMSE subchannels. Using the methodology discussed in arXiv:0810.0883 it can be shown that the mutual information converges in distribution to a Gaussian random variable.     Non-rotating and rotating neutron stars in the extended field theoretical model

    We study the properties of non-rotating and rotating neutron stars for a new set of equations of state (EOSs) with different high density behaviour obtained using the extended field theoretical model. The high density behaviour for these EOSs are varied by varying the ω−\omega-meson self-coupling and hyperon-meson couplings in such a way that the quality of fit to the bulk nuclear observables, nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient and hyperon-nucleon potential depths remain practically unaffected. We find that the largest value for maximum mass for the non-rotating neutron star is 2.1M⊙2.1M_\odot. The radius for the neutron star with canonical mass is 12.8−14.112.8 - 14.1 km provided only those EOSs are considered for which maximum mass is larger than 1.6M⊙1.6M_\odot as it is the lower bound on the maximum mass measured so far. Our results for the very recently discovered fastest rotating neutron star indicate that this star is supra massive with mass 1.7−2.7M⊙1.7 - 2.7M_\odot and circumferential equatorial radius 12−1912 - 19 km.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures.     Correlations in the properties of static and rapidly rotating compact stars

    Correlations in the properties of the static compact stars (CSs) and the ones rotating with the highest observed frequency of 1122Hz are studied using a large set of equations of state (EOSs). These EOSs span various approaches and their chemical composition vary from the nucleons to hyperons and quarks in β\beta-equilibrium. It is found that the properties of static CS, like, the maximum gravitational mass MmaxstatM_{\rm max}^{\rm stat} and radius R1.4statR_{1.4}^{\rm stat} corresponding to t he canonical mass and supramassive or non-supramassive nature of the CS rotating at 1122 Hz are strongly correlated. In particular, only those EOSs yield the CS rotating at 1122Hz to be non-supramassive for which \left (\frac{M_{\rm max}^{\rm stat}}{M_\odot}\right )^{1/2} \left (\frac{10{\rm km}}{R_{1.4}^{\rm stat}})^{3/2} is greater than unity. Suitable parametric form which can be used to split the MmaxstatM_{\rm max}^{\rm stat} −- R1.4statR_{1.4}^{\rm stat} plane into the regions of different supramassive nature of the CS rotating at 1122Hz is presented. Currently measured maximum gravitational mass 1.76M⊙M_\odot of PSR J0437-4715 suggests that the CS rotating at 1122Hz can be non-supramassive provided R1.4stat⩽12.4R_{1.4}^{\rm stat} \leqslant 12.4 km.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, Appearing in Phys.     Recrystallization of epitaxial GaN under indentation

    We report recrystallization of epitaxial (epi-) GaN(0001) film under indentation.Hardness value is measured close to 10 GPa, using a Berkovich indenter. Pop-in burst in the loading line indicates nucleation of dislocations setting in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field for the recrystallization process. Micro-Raman studies are used to identify the recrystallization process. Raman area mapping indicates the crystallized region. Phonon mode corresponding to E2(high) close to 570 cm-1 in the as-grown epi-GaN is redshifted to stress free value close to 567 cm-1 in the indented region. Evolution of A1(TO) and E1(TO) phonon modes are also reported to signify the recrystallization process.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

    Tunneling Study of the Charge-Ordering Gap on the Surface of La0.350_{0.350}Pr0.275_{0.275}Ca0.375_{0.375}MnO3_3 Thin Films

    Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy studies on (110) oriented epitaxial thin films of La0.350_{0.350}Pr0.275_{0.275}Ca0.375_{0.375}MnO3_3 are reported in the temperature range of 77 to 340 K. The films, grown on lattice matched NdGaO3_3 substrates, show a hysteretic metal-insulator transition in resistivity at 170 K. The topographic STM images show step-terrace morphology while the conductance images display a nearly homogeneous surface. The normalized conductance spectra at low temperatures (T<<150 K) show an energy gap of 0.5 eV while for T≥\geq180 K a gap of 0.16 eV is found from the activated behavior of the zero bias conductance. The presence of energy gap and the absence of phase separation on the surface over more than 2 μ\mum×\times2 μ\mum area contradicts the metallic behavior seen in resistivity measurements at low temperatures. We discuss the measured energy gap in terms of the stabilization of the insulating CO phase at the film surface.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures To appear in Phys. Rev.
