Nasolabial Flap in Maxillofacial Gunshot Trauma: A Case Series
Introduction: The nasolabial flap (NLF) has many advantages in oromaxillary reconstruction, but the majority of cases are reconstructions after pathologic resections. Its usage in trauma surgery, especially in the management of gunshot wounds, is rarely mentioned.
Case Presentation: Three cases involving gunshot injuries to the face are presented: one for reconstruction of the nasal ala, another for bone graft coverage in mandibular reconstruction, and the third for the repair of premaxillary hard and soft tissue avulsive defects.
Conclusions: The NLF is a thin, pliable flap and is useful for intraoral and facial reconstruction of trauma patients with small to moderate soft tissue loss

Esthetic Management of Gingival Lesions in Anterior Maxilla: The Role of VIP‑CT Flap, a Technical Note
Purpose: Anterior maxilla is a high esthetic demand region. Reconstruction of the soft tissue loss after pathologic resection needs special techniques. Materials and Methods: This article describes the novel use of vascularized interpositional periosteal connective tissue flap of palate (VIP‑CT) for reconstruction after resection of long‑lasting pyogenic granuloma in anterior maxilla with underlying bone resorption in interdental region. Results: Good esthetic results both in labial gingiva and interdental region were obtained. Conclusion: VIP‑CT flap is an ideal option for reconstruction of the pathologic lesions that affect the anterior maxilla and create pathologic space in interdental region. Keywords: Anterior maxilla, Pyogenic granuloma, VIP‑CT fla
Bone Suture in Management of Mandibular Degloving Injury
Traumatic degloving injuries of the mandible are rare intraoral soft tissue traumas. A simple review of the medical literature shows that no article up to this date has reported the prevalence of the degloving injuries of the mandible. Moreover, the highest incidence of mandibular degloving injuries is reported in children and young adults. In this article, the author describes the mandibular degloving injury, characterized by the separation of periosteum and soft tissues of the anterior buccal side of the mandible, and the bone suture technique. This article outlines that a correct diagnostic assessment and appropriate treatment plan can reduce the complications after mandibular degloving injuries.Key words: Bone suture, degloving, mandible, traum
Epidemiological Study of Rabies Infection in Specimens Sent to Pasteur Institute of Iran in 2015
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rabies is an acute untreatable fatal encephalitis, which is fully preventable. Determination of prevalence and the main source of the virus can help with controlling and eradicating the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of rabies in the suspicious specimens submitted to the national reference center for rabies, Pasteur Institute of Iran, during March-August 2015.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 195 rabies-suspected specimens of brain tissue. The diagnosis was done based on the determination Negri bodies through direct immunofluorescence method. In addition, rabies infection was evaluated in terms of animal type and geographic distribution.
FINDINGS: The results showed that the prevalence rate of rabies infection was 59.5% (116 specimens). This infection was mostly observed among dogs, so that from 116 cases of positive rabies, 45 cases were canine (39%). In categorizing the specimens into carnivorous and ruminant, it was found that rabies was more prevalent in carnivorous animals (p=0.01). In terms of geographic distribution, the most cases of positive rabies were reported in Khorasan Razavi province with 23 positive cases (24.2%).
CONCLUSION: Rabies infection is highly prevalent in carnivorous animals, especially dogs, and it is still considered as a dangerous zoonotic disease
