Role of allochthonous substance in initial stage succession
Materiał ten wzbogaca dodatkowo lokalną warstwę ściółki glebowej i za-pewnia wkraczanie innych gatunków roślin o wysokich wymaganiach ekologicznych
The ecological diversity of vegetation within Urban Parks in the Dabrowski Basin (southern Poland)
The aim of this work is to present the diversity of flora in terms of ecological requirements. The research was
conducted in the area of two urban parks in the area of two cities in southern Poland: Bedzin and Czeladz. These parks were
established in different historical periods, and were planned (and are managed) differently. The results of the investigation
have shown that the occurrence of 192 vascular species has been observed in the Gora Zamkowa (Castle Hill) Park, while in
the Grabek park, 334 such species are known to exist. Such disparity is the result of the occurrence of micro-habitats and of
the differences between the ways the two parks are managed. It is also due to these parks’ different functions. In the first case,
the park area is protected by law. In the latter case, human activity has created a new ecological niche for organisms with a
high degree of ecological tolerance. Based on the ecological values, the following groups of plants were distinguished: saxifrages
grasslands, xerothermic grasslands, beech forests, alder forests and artificial planted trees. Analysis has shown that urban
parks are potential places for growth various type of vegetation and also for increasing biodiversity, and can constitute
particularly important hotspots for biodiversity in the cityscape, even if their primary role is recreational. As the study shows,
the environment of a highly urbanized and industrialized region can also have a positive influence on ecological and floristic
diversity

Cryptic photosynthesis, Extrasolar planetary oxygen without a surface biological signature
On the Earth, photosynthetic organisms are responsible for the production of
virtually all of the oxygen in the atmosphere. On the land, vegetation reflects
in the visible, leading to a red edge that developed about 450 Myr ago and has
been proposed as a biosignature for life on extrasolar planets. However, in
many regions of the Earth, and particularly where surface conditions are
extreme, for example in hot and cold deserts, photosynthetic organisms can be
driven into and under substrates where light is still sufficient for
photosynthesis. These communities exhibit no detectable surface spectral
signature to indicate life. The same is true of the assemblages of
photosynthetic organisms at more than a few metres depth in water bodies. These
communities are widespread and dominate local photosynthetic productivity. We
review known cryptic photosynthetic communities and their productivity. We link
geomicrobiology with observational astronomy by calculating the disk-averaged
spectra of cryptic habitats and identifying detectable features on an exoplanet
dominated by such a biota. The hypothetical cryptic photosynthesis worlds
discussed here are Earth-analogs that show detectable atmospheric biomarkers
like our own planet, but do not exhibit a discernable biological surface
feature in the disc-averaged spectrum.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, Astrobiology (TBP) - updated Table 1, typo in

Dry and Humid Periods Reconstructed from Tree Rings in the Former Territory of Sogdiana (Central Asia) and Their Socio-economic Consequences over the Last Millennium
One of the richest societies along the Silk Road developed in Sogdiana,
located in present-day Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. This urban civilisation
reached its greatest prosperity during the golden age of the Silk Road (sixth to
ninth century ce). Rapid political and economic changes, accelerated by climatic
variations, were observed during last millennium in this region. The newly developed
tree-ring-based reconstruction of precipitation for the pastmillennium revealed
a series of dry and wet stages. During the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), two
dry periods occurred (900–1000 and 1200–1250), interrupted by a phase of wetter
conditions. Distinct dry periods occurred around 1510–1650, 1750–1850, and
1920–1970, respectively. The juniper tree-ring record of moisture changes revealed
that major dry and pluvial episodes were consistent with those indicated by hydroclimatic
proxy data from adjacent areas. These climate fluctuations have had longand
short term consequences for human history in the territory of former Sogdiana
Zmiany zagospodarowania Doliny Małej Wisły w zachodniej części Kotliny Oświęcimskiej od XVIII w. do czasów współczesnych
The aim of this study is to reconstruct land use on the floodplain of the changes in the valley was based on archival materials, such as the plan of the Wisła valley from the mid-18th c., and the Prus-sian and Austrian topographical maps from the 1860s. As the analysis of land use changes in the floodplain of the Mała Wisła valley indicates, in the years 1754-1860 the biggest change referred to the area of forests and shelterbelts, because in a hundred years it decreased three times, i.e. from 3.18 km2 to 1.05 km2. Other big changes include a diminished number and area of fish ponds, as well as smaller surface of the hydrographic network. The layout and area of low density dwellings remained almost unchanged, as a reported increase in the surface area of this form of land use was only by about 0.4%. Significant changes in the surface of ponds and water reservoirs took place in the 1950s, when a dam reservoir was built in Goczałkowice. Its caused an increase the ponds and reservoirs surface to 23.45 km2, which is over 64.7% of the grounds.
Vegetation diversity within the abandoned evangelical cemeteries in Ryn commune
Do badań wytypowano różnowiekowe cmentarze. The paper presents vegetation differentiation within selected abandoned evangelical cemeteries, which after World War II ceased to function. From mentioned period they began to spontaneously overgrow by vegetation. Recently, as a result of ecological succession cemeteries transformed and composed in the surrounding landscape and lost its original character as a sacred area. To the research were chosen small and with different ages cemeteries which moreover are diverse in the location in the landscape. As a result of research at all investigated objects were found 197 species of vascular plants. The vegetation diversity is related to the age of cemeteries and their neighborhoods ecosystems like forest and agricultural crops. The research showed that on 3 cemeteries final successional stage took place in forest direction. On the other cemeteries has dominated artificially introduced decorative plant species common encountered on sacral objects
