Activity in the mining industry is based on the profit principle as it is in other fields of business. Successful companies are trying to gain new locations because the life of a mining capacity is limited in each case. At such acquisitions in the form of purchase of mining organizations, the assessment of future economic results is critical. The issue of determining whether a mining unit achieves profit or loss in the future was dealt with in terms of surface mining of construction materials. The basic group consisted of 70 both profit-making and loss-making mines in 7 European countries owned by an international company with its seat in Europe. The criteria for predicting future economic results were determined by means of the discriminating analysis method. Based on these criteria, monitoring classifications of other mining units were carried out.Prezenční010 - Děkanát FBIvyhově

Classifying quarries vis-a-vis prospects of profitability

Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.Web of Science112225525

    Factors controlling a quarry's profit

Business profits are controlled by natural and technological parameters, besides human factors, and these vary from industry to industry. This study investigates the natural factors that influence the profitability of the quarries used for extraction of raw materials for building industries. The study covers 70 profit- and loss-making quarry enterprises operating in 2008; 50 of them operating in 2009. These quarries, which are located in seven countries of Central and Eastern Europe, are owned by a major international company. Discriminant analysis was used for classifying these enterprises as profit- or loss-making enterprises. As inputs for the analysis, eight standard company procedure monitoring parameters and two parameters acquired by special inquiries were used. The results show that profitability of the quarries is controlled primarily by human factors (organisation and management of quarry operations) and the tenure of the quarry, i.e. the period for which the enterprise was in the possession of the company. Natural factors play a secondary role in controlling sales revenue.Web of Science25325724
