Improving Patient Education on Spinal Anesthesia: An Assessment of a Patient Educational Program

    Get PDF
Abstract Spinal Anesthesia (SA) is a common type of anesthesia that is frequently used for surgeries of the lower abdomen, lower extremities, and perineal area. Spinal anesthesia offers fewer side effects and risks than General Anesthesia (GA). Patients usually recover their senses much faster with SA (MedlinePlus, 2017). Some patients often refuse SA due to fears and misconceptions. These misconceptions are related to a lack of education and resources available to patients. It is crucial that anesthesia providers learn to adequately educate patients preoperatively on the use of SA. Anesthesia providers in a community hospital in southern Illinois educated patients preoperatively about the use of SA with a pamphlet and video created by the author. Anesthesia providers who utilized the educational video and pamphlet were given a survey after one month. A total of eight anesthesia providers completed the survey. Five were CRNAs (62%) and three were anesthesiologists (37%). All the participants agreed that the material was at an appropriate reading level for patients and that the method was effective. The majority (62%) of participants found the materials to neither increase nor decrease the time of pre-anesthetic interviewing. A multimodal approach for preoperative education in SA can improve patient knowledge

GOD DOES NOT SHOW FAVORITISM: THE INTENTIONAL INCLUSION OF MINORITIES IN PENTECOSTAL LEADERSHIP

    Get PDF
Although the Azusa Street Revival, known for launching the modern Pentecostal Movement, was initially characterized by minority diversity in regard to leadership, it quickly splintered into three classic Pentecostal fellowships formed along racial lines. The research presented herein examines the racially segregated history of the Pentecostal Church in North America—acknowledging the need for the implementation of a biblically based theology of racial integration—and presents a four-step process in which minority leadership within individual Pentecostal churches is promoted, combatting the unbiblical ideology of a segregated body of Christ. The four steps include (1) the necessity for a strong visionary leader; (2) a committed team to help facilitate the work; (3) a workable strategy leading to accomplishment; and (4) the preservation of successful results by cementing them into the governing documents of the organization. The findings of this research point toward genuine progress as established leaders follow the four basic steps toward success, despite the setbacks of recent racial tensions within the social climate of the United States

    Solid-state switch modeling

A model for predicting voltages and currents of passive loads during turn on and turn off of remote power controllers is presented. The model is concerned with two devices, a five ampere device and a twenty ampere device. The model is presented as a general circuit diagram. The load current is determined by the load parameters and the conditions at switching and the steady state conditions are reached according to time constants determined by the load. The model is used to analyze the turn on and turn off conditions of certain loads including a R-C load and a R-L load

Voices of low SES women overcoming breastfeeding barriers: A qualitative analysis and model development

Abstract Background: Breast milk provides optimal nutrition for most infants for a specific amount of time. In spite of well-accepted benefits associated with breastfeeding, both for infants and mothers, rates among low-income women remain consistently low. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify what motivates women, who are at a high risk of not initiating breastfeeding or early weaning, to establish a successful breastfeeding relationship. Methods: Mothers meeting the eligibility criteria of having no more than a high school degree, being low-income, and having breastfed for \u3e 3 weeks, completed an in-depth telephone interview. Using grounded-theory methodology, researchers developed a theoretical model describing the experience of this population. Results: Though recruitment was ongoing for over a year, with 212 mothers screened for eligibility, only seven mothers were eligible and completed study activities. Based on analysis of interview transcripts, a theoretical model was developed. Conclusions: Mothers who breastfeed despite being high-risk for not breastfeeding may be motivated by the perception that breastfeeding is easier than formula feeding and comforting. In addition, the breastfeeding relationship may be protected by the services offered by WIC, which may be amplified by the mother’s own determination. A lack of experienced barriers and the act of bed-sharing may also assist with breastfeeding duration. The researchers hypothesize that, as barriers are experienced that are beyond the perceived control of WIC services, the mother’s level of stress may increase, increasing the likelihood of weaning. Future research should test the proposed model and determine specific messages targeting this at-risk population
