    Basic Connection between Superconductivity and Superfluidity

    A basic and inherently simple connection is shown to exist between superconductivity and superfluidity. It is shown here that the author's previously derived general equation which agrees well with the superconducting transition temperatures for the heavy-electron superconductors, metallic superconductors, oxide supercon- ductors, metallic hydrogen, and neutron stars, also works well for the superfluid transition temperature of 2.6 mK for liquid 3He. Reasonable estimates are made from 10^-3 K to 10^9K -- a range of 12 orders of magnitude. The same paradigm applies to the superfluid transition temperature of liquid 4He, but results in a slightly different equation. The superfluid transition temperature for dilute solutions of 3He in superfluid 4He is estimated to be ~ 1 to 10mK. This paradigm works well in detail for metallic, cuprate, and organic superconductors.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure

    Positive solutions to indefinite Neumann problems when the weight has positive average

    We deal with positive solutions for the Neumann boundary value problem associated with the scalar second order ODE u"+q(t)g(u)=0,t∈[0,T], u" + q(t)g(u) = 0, \quad t \in [0, T], where g:[0,+∞[ →Rg: [0, +\infty[\, \to \mathbb{R} is positive on  ]0,+∞[ \,]0, +\infty[\, and q(t)q(t) is an indefinite weight. Complementary to previous investigations in the case ∫0Tq(t)<0\int_0^T q(t) < 0, we provide existence results for a suitable class of weights having (small) positive mean, when gâ€Č(x)<0g'(x) < 0 at infinity. Our proof relies on a shooting argument for a suitable equivalent planar system of the type xâ€Č=y,yâ€Č=h(x)y2+q(t), x' = y, \qquad y' = h(x)y^2 + q(t), with h(x)h(x) a continuous function defined on the whole real line.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure

    We discuss shadowing corrections to the structure function F2F_2 in neutrino deep-inelastic scattering on heavy nuclear targets. In particular, we examine the role played by shadowing in the comparison of the structure functions F2F_2 measured in neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering.     Muonic hydrogen cascade time and lifetime of the short-lived 2S2S state

    Metastable 2S{2S} muonic-hydrogen atoms undergo collisional 2S{2S}-quenching, with rates which depend strongly on whether the ÎŒp\mu p kinetic energy is above or below the 2S→2P{2S}\to {2P} energy threshold. Above threshold, collisional 2S→2P{2S} \to {2P} excitation followed by fast radiative 2P→1S{2P} \to {1S} deexcitation is allowed. The corresponding short-lived ÎŒp(2S)\mu p ({2S}) component was measured at 0.6 hPa H2\mathrm{H}_2 room temperature gas pressure, with lifetime τ2Sshort=165−29+38\tau_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 165 ^{+38}_{-29} ns (i.e., λ2Squench=7.9−1.6+1.8×1012s−1\lambda_{2S}^\mathrm{quench} = 7.9 ^{+1.8}_{-1.6} \times 10^{12} \mathrm{s}^{-1} at liquid-hydrogen density) and population Ï”2Sshort=1.70−0.56+0.80\epsilon_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 1.70^{+0.80}_{-0.56} % (per ÎŒp\mu p atom). In addition, a value of the ÎŒp\mu p cascade time, TcasÎŒp=(37±5)T_\mathrm{cas}^{\mu p} = (37\pm5) ns, was found.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A Precise Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering

    We report a precise measurement of the weak mixing angle from the ratio of neutral current to charged current inclusive cross-sections in deep-inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering. The data were gathered at the CCFR neutrino detector in the Fermilab quadrupole-triplet neutrino beam, with neutrino energies up to 600 GeV. Using the on-shell definition, sin2ΞW≡1−MW2MZ2{\rm sin ^2\theta_W} \equiv 1 - \frac{{\rm M_W} ^2}{{\rm M_Z} ^2}, we obtain sin2ΞW=0.2218±0.0025(stat.)±0.0036(exp. syst.)±0.0040(model){\rm sin ^2\theta_W} = 0.2218 \pm 0.0025 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.0036 ({\rm exp.\: syst.}) \pm 0.0040 ({\rm model}).Comment: 10 pages, Nevis Preprint #1498 (Submitted to Phys.     A measurement of alphas(Q2)alpha_s(Q^2) from the Gross-Llewellyn Smith Sum Rule

    We extract a set of values for the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule at different values of 4-momentum transfer squared (Q2Q^{2}), by combining revised CCFR neutrino data with data from other neutrino deep-inelastic scattering experiments for 1<Q2<15GeV2/c21 < Q^2 < 15 GeV^2/c^2. A comparison with the order αs3\alpha^{3}_{s} theoretical predictions yields a determination of αs\alpha_{s} at the scale of the Z-boson mass of 0.114±.012.0090.114 \pm^{.009}_{.012}. This measurement provides a new and useful test of perturbative QCD at low Q2Q^2, because of the low uncertainties in the higher order calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    We briefly summarize the reported anomalous effects in deuterated metals at ambient temperature, commonly known as "Cold Fusion" (CF), with an emphasis on important experiments as well as the theoretical basis for the opposition to interpreting them as cold fusion.     Desingularization of vortices for the Euler equation

    We study the existence of stationary classical solutions of the incompressible Euler equation in the plane that approximate singular stationnary solutions of this equation. The construction is performed by studying the asymptotics of equation -\eps^2 \Delta u^\eps=(u^\eps-q-\frac{\kappa}{2\pi} \log \frac{1}{\eps})_+^p with Dirichlet boundary conditions and qq a given function. We also study the desingularization of pairs of vortices by minimal energy nodal solutions and the desingularization of rotating vortices.Comment: 40 page
