Optimized local modes for lattice dynamical applications
We present a new scheme for the construction of highly localized lattice
Wannier functions. The approach is based on a heuristic criterion for
localization and takes the symmetry constraints into account from the start. We
compare the local modes thus obtained with those generated by other schemes and
find that they also provide a better description of the relevant vibrational

An Exact Diagonalization Demonstration of Incommensurability and Rigid Band Filling for N Holes in the t-J Model
We have calculated S(q) and the single particle distribution function
for N holes in the t - J model on a non--square sqrt{8} X sqrt{32} 16--site
lattice with periodic boundary conditions; we justify the use of this lattice
in compariosn to those of having the full square symmetry of the bulk. This new
cluster has a high density of vec k points along the diagonal of reciprocal
space, viz. along k = (k,k). The results clearly demonstrate that when the
single hole problem has a ground state with a system momentum of vec k =
(pi/2,pi/2), the resulting ground state for N holes involves a shift of the
peak of the system's structure factor away from the antiferromagnetic state.
This shift effectively increases continuously with N. When the single hole
problem has a ground state with a momentum that is not equal to k =
(pi/2,pi/2), then the above--mentioned incommensurability for N holes is not
found. The results for the incommensurate ground states can be understood in
terms of rigid--band filling: the effective occupation of the single hole k =
(pi/2,pi/2) states is demonstrated by the evaluation of the single particle
momentum distribution function . Unlike many previous studies, we show
that for the many hole ground state the occupied momentum states are indeed k =

What Makes Some People Think Astrology Is Scientific?
Citizens in both North America and Europe are apt to read horoscope columns in newspapers and magazines. While some people read these casually and purely for entertainment, some believe that astrology has scientific status and can provide real insight into events and personality. Using data from a European survey, this article explores some of the reasons why some people think that astrology is scientific and how astrology is viewed in relation to other knowledge-producing practices. Three hypotheses in particular are tested. The first is that some Europeans lack the necessary scientific literacy to distinguish science from pseudoscience. The second is that people are confused about what astrology actually is. The third is derived from Adorno’s work on authoritarianism and the occult and postulates that those who adhere to authoritarian values are more likely to believe in astrological claims. Support is found for all three hypotheses. </jats:p
First-principles study of lattice instabilities in the ferromagnetic martensite NiMnGa
The phonon dispersion relations and elastic constants for ferromagnetic
NiMnGa in the cubic and tetragonally distorted Heusler structures are
computed using density-functional and density-functional perturbation theory
within the spin-polarized generalized-gradient approximation. For
, the TA tranverse acoustic branch along and
symmetry-related directions displays a dynamical instability at a wavevector
that depends on . Through examination of the Fermi-surface nesting and
electron-phonon coupling, this is identified as a Kohn anomaly. In the parent
cubic phase the computed tetragonal shear elastic constant,
C=(CC)/2, is close to zero, indicating a marginal
elastic instability towards a uniform tetragonal distortion. We conclude that
the cubic Heusler structure is unstable against a family of energy-lowering
distortions produced by the coupling between a uniform tetragonal distortion
and the corresponding modulation. The computed relation between the
ratio and the modulation wavevector is in excellent agreement with
structural data on the premartensitic ( = 1) and martensitic ( =
0.94) phases of NiMnGa.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Structural and dielectric properties of SrTiO from first principles
We have investigated the structural and dielectric properties of
SrTiO,the first member of the SrTiO
Ruddlesden-Popper series, within density functional theory. Motivated by recent
work in which thin films of SrTiO were grown by molecular beam
epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO substrates, the in-plane lattice parameter was
fixed to the theoretically optimized lattice constant of cubic SrTiO
(n=), while the out-of-plane lattice parameter and the internal
structural parameters were relaxed. The fully relaxed structure was also
investigated. Density functional perturbation theory was used to calculate the
zone-center phonon frequencies, Born effective charges, and the electronic
dielectric permittivity tensor. A detailed study of the contribution of
individual infrared-active modes to the static dielectric permittivity tensor
was performed. The calculated Raman and infrared phonon frequencies were found
to be in agreement with experiment where available. Comparisons of the
calculated static dielectric permittivity with experiments on both ceramic

18-Hydroxydolabella-3,7-diene synthase – a diterpene synthase from <i>Chitinophaga pinensis</i>
The product obtained in vitro from a diterpene synthase encoded in the genome of the bacterium Chitinophaga pinensis, an enzyme previously reported to have germacrene A synthase activity during heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, was identified by extensive NMR-spectroscopic methods as 18-hydroxydolabella-3,7-diene. The absolute configuration of this diterpene alcohol and the stereochemical course of the terpene synthase reaction were addressed by isotopic labelling experiments. Heterologous expression of the diterpene synthase in Nicotiana benthamiana resulted in the production of 18-hydroxydolabella-3,7-diene also in planta, while the results from the heterologous expression in E. coli were shown to be reproducible, revealing that the expression of one and the same terpene synthase in different heterologous hosts may yield different terpene products
