    Cytomegalovirus infection and gastric emptying

    Gastrointestinal infection due to cytomegalovirus occurs frequently in liver transplant recipients. Upper gastrointestinal cytomegalovirus infection is associated with subjective complaints of nausea, a sense of abdominal fullness, and occasionally emesis and/or dysphagia. In order to determine whether these symptoms reflect a disruption of the normal motility of the stomach, the following study was performed. Eleven individuals who were evaluated for liver transplantation were prospectively recruited and studied as follows: (1) upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy of the gastric antral mucosa; (2) viral culture of the gastric mucosa; (3) a histologic examination of the gastric mucosa; and (4) a radionuclide gastric emptying study was obtained before and 4—8 weeks following successful liver transplantation. Prior to liver transplantation, none had symptoms of nausea, vomiting, or epigastric fullness. All were culture-negative for cytomegalovirus. All had endoscopic and histologic evidence of portal hypertensive gastro-pathy but none had antral erosions or ulcers. All demonstrated normal gastric emptying of a liquid meal. Following liver transplantation, 6 remained free of gastric cytomegalovirus while 5 developed a culture-confirmed gastric cytomegalovirus infection. Those that developed a gastric cytomegalovirus infection also had more gastric symptoms, and more gastric histologic abnormalities. Moreover, those with a gastric cytomegalovirus infection demonstrated enhanced gastric retention of a liquid meal (P<0.01). © 1992 by Williams & Wilkins

    Domain and Geometry Agnostic CNNs for Left Atrium Segmentation in 3D Ultrasound

    Segmentation of the left atrium and deriving its size can help to predict and detect various cardiovascular conditions. Automation of this process in 3D Ultrasound image data is desirable, since manual delineations are time-consuming, challenging and observer-dependent. Convolutional neural networks have made improvements in computer vision and in medical image analysis. They have successfully been applied to segmentation tasks and were extended to work on volumetric data. In this paper we introduce a combined deep-learning based approach on volumetric segmentation in Ultrasound acquisitions with incorporation of prior knowledge about left atrial shape and imaging device. The results show, that including a shape prior helps the domain adaptation and the accuracy of segmentation is further increased with adversarial learning

    Genetic relationship between feed efficiency and profitability traits in beef cattle

    Genetic selection to improve feed efficiency aims to reduce the cost of feeding costs in beef cattle production and thereby improve profitability. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic (co)variances to compare residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) with growth, reproductive and profitability traits measured in growth tests of young bulls. The heritability estimated for FCR was 0.34 and for RFI 0.31 with a genetic correlation estimate of 0.75 between the traits. The estimated genetic correlation between profitability and FCR and RFI were -0.92 and -0.59, respectively. The genetic correlations and expected correlated responses between RFI and FCR with post-wean profitability (M-value) suggest that indirect selection for M-value through the direct selection for FCR and/or RFI will result in slower genetic progress in M-value than direct selection for M-value. However, where the M-value cannot be calculated and/or direct selection for M-value is not possible, it would be better to select indirectly for M-value through the use of FCR rather than RFI.     Rapid growth of an intact human liver transplanted into a recipient larger than the donor

    Two individuals undergoing orthotopic hepatic transplantation received livers from donors who were on average 10 kg smaller than themselves based on recipient ideal body weight. As a result, the donor livers in these 2 cases were 29%-59% smaller than would be expected had the donor liver and recipient been matched ideally. The liver grafts in the recipients steadily increased in size, as determined by serial computed tomography scanning, to achieve new volumes consistent with those that would have been expected in a normal individual of the recipient's size, sex, and age. Fasting plasma levels of amino acids, glucagon, insulin, and standard liver injury tests were monitored to determine which measure best reflected the changes observed in the size of the grafts over time. No relationship between the changes observed in any of these parameters and hepatic growth was apparent. In both cases, the liver increased in volume at a rate of ~70 ml/day. These data demonstrate that a small-for-size liver transplanted into a larger recipient increases in size at a rate of ~70 ml/day until it achieves a liver volume consistent with that expected given the recipient's size, age, and sex. © 1987

    Genetic variance components for residual feed intake and feed conversion ratio and their correlations with other production traits in beef bulls

    Feeding costs of animals is a major determinant of profitability in livestock production enterprises. Genetic selection to improve feed efficiency aims to reduce feeding cost in beef cattle and thereby improve profitability. This study estimated genetic (co)variances between weaning weight and other production, reproduction and efficiency traits. Traits included residual feed intake (RFI), feed conversion ration (FCR), growth (average daily gain (ADG), weaning weight (WW) and shoulder height (SHD)), reproductive (scrotum circumference (SCR)) and profitability traits measured in growth tests of young bulls. The only genetic correlations of significance with WW were those with SHD (0.50) and ADG (0.28). Weaning weight serves as no indication of an animal's production, owing to low genetic correlations with other traits (reproduction or feedlot post-weaning growth efficiency). The heritability estimated for FCR was 0.34 and for RFI 0.31 with a genetic correlation estimate of 0.75 between them. The estimated genetic correlation of profitability (Rand-value) with FCR and RFI were -0.92 and -0.59, respectively.
