Elizabeth Madox Roberts: Her Symbolism and Philosophic Perspective

Thesis (Ph.D)--Boston UniversityThe work of Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Kentucky novelist and poet (1881-1941), presents a problem in valuation. Her early novels, particularly The Time of Man (1926) and The Great Meadow (1930), received critical acclaim and popular success. Yet today Miss Roberts' novels are virtually neglected or given scant recognition as "regionalist." Examination shows that "regionalism" in the 1920's and 1930's was primarily a sociological phenomenon; the term "literary regionalist" proves to have little objective critical meaning, operating rather as a vaguely pejorative label . Accordingly, I examine Miss Roberts' work in terms of three questions: What does she try to accomplish? How well does she succeed? Is the achievement worthwhile? By studying her published works and her extensive private writings, it is possible to extract her philosophic and aeathetic perspectives . The intellectual profile which emerges is that of a philosophical idealist whose basis of faith is in an active perceiving imagining mind; her definition of reality is highly subjective , organic and dynamic. The primal unit ia the self-contained experiential individual, striving to grow in accordance with the principles of organic harmony - - that is to say, self-urged to become true, beautiful, and good by the natural accretions of experience. Further, this isolated individual can transcend himself, merging into something beyond himself through love, friendship, communal groupings, and aesthetic and religious experiences. In these flashes of transcendent "belongingess," individuality is not lost, but, paradoxically, greatly intensified. Happiness consists then in the most extensive creation of design on the chaos of sensation. [TRUNCATED

Man for all seasons: W.W. Keen

Journal ArticleWILLIAM WILLIAMS KEEN was the catalyst for the advent of neurosurgery in the United States. He served in the Civil War and collaborated with Silas Weir Mitchell in studying injuries sustained to the nervous system. These studies culminated in the publication in 1864 of Gunshot Wounds and Other Injuries of the Nerves and Reflex Paralysis, which first described causalgia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and secondary paralysis. His most monumental accomplishment undoubtedly was being the first surgeon in the United States to successfully remove a primary brain tumor (1887) and have the patient survive for more than 30 years. As the editor of Surgery, Its Principles and Practice, Keen invited Harvey Cushing to write the section on surgery of the head, which propelled Cushing to international recognition and provided a foothold for the new specialty of neurosurgery. Multiple sources were reviewed to prepare this comprehensive biographical account of Keen's contributions. Emphasis is placed on those achievements that furthered the discipline of neurosurgery. Although a general surgeon, Keen had a special interest in the nervous system. He treated patients with trigeminal neuralgia, performed cortical excisions for patients with epilepsy, and devised the procedure of posterior upper cervical root sections for spasmodic torticollis. He was the first surgeon to perform and advocate ventricular punctures. He served as a consultant and surgeon to both Grover Cleveland and Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The authors review the literature on intra-adenomatous pituitary apoplexy with special emphasis on pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapeutic approach. They present five cases, from a series of 86 patients with pituitary tumors, that developed this syndrome. The patients were diagnosed and followed by the Neurosurgery and Endocrinology Services of Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Diagnosis was confirmed by CT-Scan and MRI in all cases , and the treatment of choice was surgical. Conclusions point to the diagnostic difficulties and the urgency of treatment in this clincal setting
