    Com o objetivo de avaliar a influĂȘncia de seis porta-enxertos sobre a maturação e as caracterĂ­sticas fĂ­sico-quĂ­micas de frutos de laranjeira 'ValĂȘncia', instalou-se um experimento em janeiro de 1994, no municĂ­pio de Nova Esperança-PR. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetiçÔes, trĂȘs plantas Ășteis por parcela e seis tratamentos, constituĂ­dos pelos porta-enxertos: limoeiro 'Cravo' (Citrus limonia), tangerineiras 'CleĂłpatra' (C. reshni) e 'Sunki' (C. sunki), citrangeiro 'Troyer' (Poncirus trifoliata x C. sinensis), tangeleiro 'orlando' (C. tangerina x C. paradisi) e laranjeira 'Caipira'(C. sinensis). Avaliou-se a qualidade dos frutos em sete safras e a curva de maturação foi estimada para os anos de 1999 e 2000. Todos os porta-enxertos proporcionaram qualidade aceitĂĄvel aos frutos da laranjeira 'ValĂȘncia', com destaque para o citrangeiro 'Troyer' que superou o limoeiro 'Cravo' em rendimento industrial. Em um ano considerado com padrĂŁo climĂĄtico normal, a evolução do Ă­ndice tecnolĂłgico ajustou-se a uma equação de regressĂŁo quadrĂĄtica, proporcionando melhor rendimento industrial quando os frutos foram colhidos no inĂ­cio de novembro, independentemente do porta-enxerto utilizado.<br>In order to evaluate the influence of six rootstocks on the maturation and the physical characteristics and chemical composition of 'ValĂȘncia' fruits, a research was conducted in a field established in 1994, in Nova Esperança city, state of ParanĂĄ, Brazil. A complete randomized block design was used, with four replications, three evaluated trees per plot and six treatments, constituted by the rootstocks: 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia), 'Cleopatra' (C. reshni) and 'Sunki' (C. sunki) mandarins, 'Troyer' citrange (Poncirus trifoliata x C. sinensis), 'orlando' tangelo (C. tangerina x C. paradisi) and 'Caipira' sweet orange (C. sinensis). Fruit quality was evaluated along seven harvesting seasons and the maturation curve was determined for the years of 1999 and 2000. All the evaluated rootstocks provided acceptable quality to 'ValĂȘncia'orange fruits, with the 'Troyer' citrange inducing larger industrial juice yield, as compared to the Rangpur lime. In years with normal climatic pattern, the technological index response had a quadratic tendency of curve fitting, with larger industrial juice yield when fruits were harvested at the beginning of November, for any of the evaluated rootstocks

    Manure production on grower/finisher swine operations in the United States was examined using data from 184 grower/finisher swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System's 1995 National Swine Study. Two methods were used: one, assuming that pigs produced 8.4% of their body weight in manure each day; another using the difference between feed fed and weight gained as a proxy variable to study manure production. Using this latter approach, a production function was developed. The function exhibited diminishing returns to scale when food waste was not fed to pigs, but constant returns to scale when food waste was included in their diets. The difference between feed fed and weight gained was lower on operations that restricted entry to employees only.<br>A produção de dejetos em granjas de crescimento e terminação de suĂ­nos nos Estados Unidos foi avaliada utilizando dados de 184 granjas participantes de um estudo nacional de 1995 do "United States National Animal Health Monitoring System".
