A Small Mammal Community in a Forest Fragment, Vegetation Corridor and Coffee Matrix System in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest
The objective of our work was to verify the value of the vegetation corridor in the conservation of small mammals in fragmented tropical landscapes, using a model system in the southeastern Minas Gerais. We evaluated and compared the composition and structure of small mammals in a vegetation corridor, forest fragments and a coffee matrix. A total of 15 species were recorded, and the highest species richness was observed in the vegetation corridor (13 species), followed by the forest fragments (10) and the coffee matrix (6). The absolute abundance was similar between the vegetation corridor and fragments (F = 22.94; p = 0.064), and the greatest differences occurred between the vegetation corridor and the matrix (F = 22.94; p = 0.001) and the forest fragments and the matrix (F = 22.94; p = 0.007). Six species showed significant habitat preference possibly related to the sensitivity of the species to the forest disturbance. Marmosops incanus was the species most sensitive to disturbance; Akodon montensis, Cerradomys subflavus, Gracilinanus microtarsus and Rhipidomys sp. displayed little sensitivity to disturbance, with a high relative abundance in the vegetation corridor. Calomys sp. was the species least affected by habitat disturbance, displaying a high relative abundance in the coffee matrix. Although the vegetation corridors are narrow (4 m width), our results support the hypothesis in which they work as a forest extension, share most species with the forest fragment and support species richness and abundance closer to forest fragments than to the coffee matrix. Our work highlights the importance and cost-effectiveness of these corridors to biodiversity management in the fragmented Atlantic Forest landscapes and at the regional level
Programmable disorder in random DNA tilings
Scaling up the complexity and diversity of synthetic molecular structures will require strategies that exploit the inherent stochasticity of molecular systems in a controlled fashion. Here we demonstrate a framework for programming random DNA tilings and show how to control the properties of global patterns through simple, local rules. We constructed three general forms of planar network—random loops, mazes and trees—on the surface of self-assembled DNA origami arrays on the micrometre scale with nanometre resolution. Using simple molecular building blocks and robust experimental conditions, we demonstrate control of a wide range of properties of the random networks, including the branching rules, the growth directions, the proximity between adjacent networks and the size distribution. Much as combinatorial approaches for generating random one-dimensional chains of polymers have been used to revolutionize chemical synthesis and the selection of functional nucleic acids, our strategy extends these principles to random two-dimensional networks of molecules and creates new opportunities for fabricating more complex molecular devices that are organized by DNA nanostructures

Towards the synthesis of guanidinate- and amidinate-bridged dimers of Mn and Ni
Reactions of Cp2M (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, M = Mn, Ni) with lithium amidinates and guanidinates are reported. The highly oxophilic nature of Mn leads to the isolation of the interstitial oxide Mn4O(MeN···CH···NMe)6 (4) in preference to the intended paddle-wheel homodimer Mn2(MeN···CH···NMe)4 when employing the sterically uncongested amidinate [MeN···CH···NMe]– ligand. In contrast, an analogous reaction using Cp2Ni yielded Ni2(MeN···CH···NMe)4 (5). The use of monoprotic guanidinate ligands also gave contrasting results for Mn and Ni. In the first case, the highly unusual spirocycle Mn{μ-NC(NMe2)2}4Li2·3THF (6) was produced in low yield. For M = Ni, use of the [hpp]– (1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidinate) ligand gives results comparable with the synthesis of 5, with Ni2(hpp)4 (7) isolated. In contrast to recent data obtained using Cp2Cr, the guanidinate ligands do not sequester coformed CpLi. Density functional theory analysis corroborates the view that the intermetal distance in each of the reported dinickel paddle-wheel complexes (2.4846(8) and 2.3753(5) Å in 5 and 7 respectively) is defined by the geometric parameters of the bidentate ligands and that intermetal bonding is not present.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council [grant number EP/P504856/1] and the Leverhulme Trust.This is the accepted manuscript. Evaluation of quantified contrast-enhanced color and power Doppler ultrasonography for the assessment of vascularity and perfusion of naturally occurring tumors in dogs
OBJECTIVE: To investigate subjective and computerized methods of evaluation of color Doppler (CD) and power Doppler (PD) ultrasonographic images (obtained before and after administration of contrast medium) for quantitative assessment of vascularity and perfusion of various naturally occurring tumors in dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: 34 tumors in 34 dogs. PROCEDURE: Tumors in dogs were examined via CD and PD ultrasonography before and after i.v. injection of a microbubble contrast agent (pre- and postcontrast examinations, respectively). Images were digitized for subjective assessment of vessel density and vascular pattern and computer-aided assessment of parameters of vascularity (fractional area [FA]) and perfusion (color-weighted FA [CWFA] and mean color-weighted FA [CWFA] and mean color level). RESULTS: With both analysis methods, more vessels were identified in precontrast PD ultrasonographic images than in precontrast CD ultrasonographic images. Moreover, compared with values for precontrast PD ultrasonography, FA, CWFA, and mean color level were higher for postcontrast PD ultrasonography. In postcontrast images, there was a significant association between vessel densities determined through subjective and computerized assessments. Although sample size was small, vascularity of squamous cell carcinomas was significantly greater than that of other tumor types. Ten of the 19 softer than issue that sarcomas had low vessel density with minor contrast enhancement. With increasing gross tumor volume, FA and CWFA decreased for all Doppler ultrasonographic methods. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Higher values of the ultrasonographic parameters representing vascularity and perfusion of tumors in dogs were determined via PD ultrasonography after administration of contrast medium than via PD or CD ultrasonography without administration of contrast medium
