    Necro-techno : examples from an archaeology of media

Bygone processes and narratives (particularly those of the pre-cinematic era) are being excavated in what Finnish writer Erkki Huhtamo has termed "media archaeology" Why are we witnessing the resurgence of these techniques in the context of contemporary art, and what is their relevance today? In this dissertation, the intentions and methods employed by contemporary artists who enlist archaic technologies are discussed, and the effectiveness of their strategies evaluated against a background of the history of VISion, technology and contemporary commentaries on media. While all art Involves interaction between the viewer and the artwork, the works discussed here provide a particular opportunity for active engagement In perceptual experience Magic, humor, immediacy and play are Invoked by the following artists as useful means for addressing the complexity of Issues surrounding technological "progress" I will consider the work of four prominent practitioners to exemplify crucial themes and questions relating to the nexus of creativity and technologies of representation. Ellen Zweig (USA) extends notions of performance and history by enlisting phantasmagoric and camera obscura effects; Paul DeMarinis (USA) invents ingenious optical-audio kinetic sculptures which honour eccentric histories; Toshio Iwai (Japan) expands the vocabulary of pre-cinema through his zoetropic and stroboscopic devices; and Jim Pomeroy (USA) presents subversive three dimensional (3-D) performances and persistence-of-vision devices. As the practice of these artists attests, technologies do not become obsolete; they can resonate well past their commercially Viable use-by dates. This thesis shows that by exhuming and extending the sometimes absurd objects and stories surrounding former technologies, these artists are successfully emphasizing the often overlooked role of human engagement and the cyclical nature of technology, rather than fore-fronting the technical apparatus and its lineage. Far from being dead or buried in nostalgia, archaic media are offered as evidence of a lively continuity and multiplicity of both function and meaning. Creative Research In my own practice, I have been exploring Ihe sculptural, experiential and sometimes humorous possibilities of light and optical phenomena in installations that frequently feature obsolete technologies (such as camera obscuras, phantasmagoria, periscopes and the photographic rifle), often in combination with newer media technologies such as video, photography and digital imaging. These exhibitions have incorporated a machine for making rainbows, a camera obscura/fibre-optic journey through the center of the earth, paranoid dinner-table devices (Liquid Scrutiny was influenced by a drawing of a 17th century Czech camera obscura goblet), an interactive computer/video rifle (an installation entitled To Fall Standing referenced French physiologist E.J Marey's photographic rifle of 1882), and a periscope birdbath. In the spirit of 19th century chimeras, I merged site-specific portable camera obscuras with garbage bins, flowerpots, portable toilets, birdhouses, mobile homes, removalist trucks, televisions and Tibetan cheese boxes These works affirm that our fascination with surveillance and the extension of human vision is not Just a recent preoccupation of the electronic age, but part of a lively legacy that continues to find application in the present. My intent is to engage viewers in playful participation while considering historical narratives, natural phenomena and the implications of current media practice

    Investigating the Impact of Ultra-Radical Surgery on Survival in Advanced Ovarian Cancer Using Population-Based Data in a Multicentre UK Study

    We investigated URS and impact on survival in whole patient cohorts with AOC treated within gynaecological cancer centres that participated in the previously presented SOCQER 2 study. National cancer registry datasets were used to identify FIGO Stage 3,4 and unknown stage patients from 11 cancer centres that had previously participated in the SOCQER2 study. Patient outcomes’ association with surgical ethos were evaluated using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards. Centres were classified into three groups based on their surgical complexity scores (SCS); those practicing mainly low complexity, (5/11 centres with >70% low SCS procedures, 759 patients), mainly intermediate (3/11, 35–50% low SCS, 356 patients), or mainly high complexity surgery (3/11, >35% high SCS, 356 patients). Surgery rates were 43.2% vs. 58.4% vs. 60.9%. across mainly low, intermediate and high SCS centres, respectively, p < 0.001. Combined surgery and chemotherapy rates were 39.2% vs. 51.8% vs. 38.3% p < 0.000 across mainly low, intermediate and high complexity groups, respectively. Median survival was 23.1 (95% CI 19.0 to 27.2) vs. 22.0 (95% CI 17.6 to 26.3) vs. 17.9 months (95% CI 15.7 to 20.1), p = 0.043 in mainly high SCS, intermediate, and low SCS centres, respectively. In an age and deprivation adjusted model, compared to patients in the high SCS centres, patients in the low SCS group had an HR of 1.21 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.40) for death. Mainly high/intermediate SCS centres have significantly higher surgery rates and better survival at a population level. Centres that practice mainly low complexity surgery should change practice. This study provides support for the utilization of URS for patients with advanced OC

    The digestion of protein and carbohydrate by the stream detritivore, Tipula abdominalis (Diptera, Tipulidae)

    The digestive system of larvae of Tipula abdominalis (Diptera, Tipulidae), a stream detritivore, is poorly adapted for the digestion of the major polysaccharides in its diet, but well adapted for the digestion of protein. These crane fly larvae are unable to digest the major cell wall polysaccharides of higher plants, i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin. The only polysaccharides toward which the midguts of T. abdominalis exhibited any activity were α-amylose and laminarin, indicating that polysaccharide digestion is restricted to α-1,4-and β-1,3-glucans. The most concentrated source of these two classes of carbohydrates in submerged leaf litter would be associated fungal tissue. The midgut of T. abdominalis is strongly alkaline throughout, with a maximum pH near 11.5 in a narrow zone near the midpoint. Proteolytic activity in the midgut is extraordinarily high, and the pH optimum for midgut proteolytic activity is above 11. We conclude that the high alkalinity and high proteolytic activity observed in T. abdominalis larvae are manifestations of a highly efficient protein-digesting system, a system of crucial importance to a nitrogen-limited organism which must derive its nitrogen from a resource in which much of the limited nitrogen present is in a “bound” form in complexes of proteins with lignins and polyphenols.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47733/1/442_2004_Article_BF00346265.pd

    Geographical Perspectives on Transport and Ageing

    In terms of ageing, we are living in unprecedented times. People across the globe are living longer than ever before and societies are ageing at increasing rates. In low to middle income countries reductions in mortality at young ages have fuelled this growth. A person born today in Brazil, for example, can expect to live 20 years longer than someone born 50 years ago (WHO, 2015). For the first time life expectancy across the globe is over 60 years of age. In high Income countries, someone born now can expect to live up to around 80 years of age on average (ONS, 2015). There are not simply a growing number of older people, but also a growing number of older people as a total percentage of the population due to people living longer and declining birth rates in many countries. Across Europe, for example, people aged over 65 years will account for 29.5% of the population in 2060 compared to around 19% now (EUROSTAT, 2017). The share of those aged 80 years or above across Europe will almost triple by 2060 (EUROSTAT, 2017)The macro level demographics and associated trends mask big differences within the ageing populations. There can be as much as 10 years difference in life expectancy within high income countries, for example in the UK someone born a baby boy born in Kensington and Chelsea has a life expectancy of 83.3 years, compared with a boy born in Glasgow who has a life expectancy of 10 years lower (73.0 years) (ONS, 2015). For newborn baby girls, life expectancy is highest in Chiltern at 86.7 years and 8 years lower Glasgow at 78.5 years (ONS, 2015; NRS, 2016). There is also considerable variation within cities, spatially and socially.This volume brings together contributions from a broad range of human geographers, with different disciplinary perspectives of transport and ageing. This chapter outlines some of the key contemporary issues for an ageing society in terms of transport and mobility, highlights the importance of considering transport and mobility for ageing populations and outlines the contribution that a geographical approach can offer to studies of transport and ageing

    The Future of Biologic Agents in the Treatment of Sjögren’s Syndrome

    The gain in knowledge regarding the cellular mechanisms of T and B lymphocyte activity in the pathogenesis of Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and the current availability of various biological agents (anti-TNF-α, IFN- α, anti-CD20, and anti-CD22) have resulted in new strategies for therapeutic intervention. In SS, various phase I and II studies have been performed to evaluate these new strategies. Currently, B cell-directed therapies seem to be more promising than T cell-related therapies. However, large, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm the promising results of these early studies. When performing these trials, special attention has to be paid to prevent the occasional occurrence of the severe side effects

    FinTech revolution: the impact of management information systems upon relative firm value and risk

    The FinTech or ‘financial technology’ revolution has been gaining increasing interest as technologies are fundamentally changing the business of financial services. Consequently, financial technology is playing an increasingly important role in providing relative performance growth to firms. It is also well known that such relative performance can be observed through pairs trading investment. Therefore pairs trading have implications for understanding financial technology performance, yet the relationships between relative firm value and financial technology are not well understood. In this paper we investigate the impact of financial technology upon relative firm value in the banking sector. Firstly, using pairs trade data we show that financial technologies reveal differences in relative operational performance of firms, providing insight on the value of financial technologies. Secondly, we find that contribution of relative firm value growth from financial technologies is dependent on the specific business characteristics of the technology, such as the business application and activity type. Finally, we show that financial technologies impact the operational risk of firms and so firms need to take into account both the value and risk benefits in implementing new technological innovations.     The systematicity challenge to anti-representational dynamicism

    After more than twenty years of representational debate in the cognitive sciences, anti-representational dynamicism may be seen as offering a rival and radically new kind of explanation of systematicity phenomena. In this paper, I argue that, on the contrary, anti-representational dynamicism must face a version of the old systematicity challenge: either it does not explain systematicity, or else, it is just an implementation of representational theories. To show this, I present a purely behavioral and representation-free account of systematicity. I then consider a case of insect sensorimotor systematic behavior: communicating behavior in honey bees. I conclude that anti-representational dynamicism fails to capture the fundamental trait of systematic behaviors qua systematic, i.e., their involving exercises of the same behavioral capacities. I suggest, finally, a collaborative strategy in pursuit of a rich and powerful account of this central phenomenon of high cognition at all levels of explanation, including the representational level
