    Explicit generation of the branching tree of states in spin glasses

    We present a numerical method to generate explicit realizations of the tree of states in mean-field spin glasses. The resulting study illuminates the physical meaning of the full replica symmetry breaking solution and provides detailed information on the structure of the spin-glass phase. A cavity approach ensures that the method is self-consistent and permits the evaluation of sophisticated observables, such as correlation functions. We include an example application to the study of finite-size effects in single-sample overlap probability distributions, a topic that has attracted considerable interest recently.Comment: Version accepted for publication in JSTA

    Addressing Item-Cold Start Problem in Recommendation Systems using Model Based Approach and Deep Learning

    Traditional recommendation systems rely on past usage data in order to generate new recommendations. Those approaches fail to generate sensible recommendations for new users and items into the system due to missing information about their past interactions. In this paper, we propose a solution for successfully addressing item-cold start problem which uses model-based approach and recent advances in deep learning. In particular, we use latent factor model for recommendation, and predict the latent factors from item's descriptions using convolutional neural network when they cannot be obtained from usage data. Latent factors obtained by applying matrix factorization to the available usage data are used as ground truth to train the convolutional neural network. To create latent factor representations for the new items, the convolutional neural network uses their textual description. The results from the experiments reveal that the proposed approach significantly outperforms several baseline estimators

    A model for liquid-striped liquid phase separation in liquids of anisotropic polarons

    The phase separation between a striped polaron liquid at the particular density and a high density polaron liquid is described by a modified Van der Waals scheme. The striped polaron liquid represents the pseudo gap matter or Wigner-like polaron phase at 1/8 doping in cuprate superconductors. The model includes the tendency of pseudo- Jahn-Teller polarons to form anisotropic directional bonds at a preferential volume with the formation of different liquid phases. The model gives the coexistence of a first low density polaron striped liquid and a second high density liquid that appears in cuprate superconductors for doping larger than 1/8. We discuss how the strength of anisotropic bonds controls the variation the phase separation scenarios for complex systems in the presence of a quantum critical point where the phase separation vanishes.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Discovery and Characterization of Transiting SuperEarths Using an All-Sky Transit Survey and Follow-up by the James Webb Space Telescope

    Doppler and transit surveys are finding extrasolar planets of ever smaller mass and radius, and are now sampling the domain of superEarths (1-3 Earth radii). Recent results from the Doppler surveys suggest that discovery of a transiting superEarth in the habitable zone of a lower main sequence star may be possible. We evaluate the prospects for an all-sky transit survey targeted to the brightest stars, that would find the most favorable cases for photometric and spectroscopic characterization using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We use the proposed Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) as representative of an all-sky survey. We couple the simulated TESS yield to a sensitivity model for the MIRI and NIRSpec instruments on JWST. We focus on the TESS planets with radii between Earth and Neptune. Our simulations consider secondary eclipse filter photometry using JWST/MIRI, comparing the 11- and 15-micron bands to measure CO2 absorption in superEarths, as well as JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of water absorption from 1.7-3.0 microns, and CO2 absorption at 4.3-microns. We project that TESS will discover about eight nearby habitable transiting superEarths. The principal sources of uncertainty in the prospects for JWST characterization of habitable superEarths are superEarth frequency and the nature of superEarth atmospheres. Based on our estimates of these uncertainties, we project that JWST will be able to measure the temperature, and identify molecular absorptions (water, CO2) in one to four nearby habitable TESS superEarths.Comment: accepted for PASP; added discussion and figure for habitable planets; abridged Abstrac

    A mean field game model for COVID-19 with human capital accumulation

    In this manuscript, we study a model of human capital accumulation during the spread of disease following an agent-based approach, where agents behave maximising their intertemporal utility. We assume that the agent interaction is of mean field type, yielding a mean field game description of the problem. We discuss how the analysis of a model including both the mechanism of change of species from one epidemiological state to the other and an optimisation problem for each agent leads to an aggregate behaviour that is not easy to describe, and that sometimes exhibits structural issues. Therefore we eventually propose and study numerically a SEIRD model in which the rate of infection depends on the distribution of the population, given exogenously as the solution to the mean field game system arising as the macroscopic description of the discrete multi-agent economic model for the accumulation of human capital. Such a model arises in fact as a simplified but tractable version of the initial one

    Designing Digital Methods to monitor and inform Urban Policy. The case of Paris and its Urban Nature initiative.

    The reconciliation of nature and the urban space is worldwide considered among the smart solutions to a growing range of issues created by urban growth. But there is no agreement on the imaginaries and technical practices that should be included into the new urban nature. To address the specific case of the city Paris and its big re-naturation project, to observe, monitor and, eventually, produce elements of reflections for future urban policies, in the NATURPRADI project has been conducted a Digital Methods campaign. It is aimed at mapping the symbolic and material elements of the urban nature debate by asking specific research questions: Which images, discourses and practices narrate urban nature? by whom and what are they sustained? After having detailed the methodological aspect of the research, we critically discuss how the result of the Digital Methods campaign could constitute a strategy to address simultaneously citizens and institutions alike, and provide them with tools to navigate through the issue and imagine future public policies
