Endometriosis: A Rare Cause of Large Bowel Obstruction.

    Get PDF
Large bowel obstruction can result in significant morbidity and mortality, especially in cases of acute complete obstruction. There are many possible causes, the most common in adults being colorectal cancer. Endometriosis is a benign disease, and the most affected extragenital location is the bowel, especially the rectosigmoid junction. However, transmural involvement and acute occlusion are very rare events. We report an exceptional case of acute large bowel obstruction as the initial presentation of endometriosis. The differential diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma may be challenging, and this case emphasizes the need to consider intestinal endometriosis in females at a fertile age presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms and an intestinal mass causing complete large bowel obstruction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Extracellular matrix mimics using hyaluronan-based biomaterials

Hyaluronan (HA) is a critical element of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The regulated synthesis and degradation of HA modulates the ECM chemical and physical properties that, in turn, influence cellular behavior. HA triggers signaling pathways associated with the adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation of cells, mediated by its interaction with specific cellular receptors or by tuning the mechanical properties of the ECM. This review summarizes the recent advances on strategies used to mimic the HA present in the ECM to study healthy or pathological cellular behavior. This includes the development of HA-based 2D and 3D in vitro tissue models for the seeding and encapsulation of cells, respectively, and HA particles as carriers for the targeted delivery of therapeutic agents. The authors acknowledge thefinancial support from the European Commission’s H2020 programme, under grantagreements H2020-WIDESPREAD-2014-668983-FORECAST, and H2020-MSCA-RISE-2019-872648-MEPHOS. Universal velocity distributions in an experimental granular fluid

We present experimental results on the velocity statistics of a uniformly heated granular fluid, in a quasi-2D configuration. We find the base state, as measured by the single particle velocity distribution f(c)f(c), to be universal over a wide range of filling fractions and only weakly dependent on all other system parameters. There is a consistent overpopulation in the distribution's tails, which scale as fexp(const.×c3/2)f\propto\exp(\mathrm{const.}\times c^{-3/2}). More importantly, the high probability central region of f(c)f(c), at low velocities, deviates from a Maxwell-Boltzmann by a second order Sonine polynomial with a single adjustable parameter, in agreement with recent theoretical analysis of inelastic hard spheres driven by a stochastic thermostat. To our knowledge, this is the first time that Sonine deviations have been measured in an experimental system.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, with minor corrections, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Radiative corrections for few-nucleon systems

We use a combination of effective field theory and the renormalization group to determine the impact of radiative corrections on the nucleon-nucleon potential. In order to do so, we present a modified version of pionless effective field theory inspired by earlier work in nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. The renormalization group analysis of corrections in the deuteron indicate that radiative corrections generate 12%1-2\% of the binding energy. This work serves as an important starting point for the study of radiative corrections in few-body systems relevant for precision tests of the Standard Model.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
