Viable baby from a couvelaire uterus
A 20 years primi gravida of 32 weeks pregnancy by date was admittedin the labor room with diagnosis of preterm labor with preeclampsia.Ultrasonography revealed 36 weeks pregnancy with normal liquorvolume and fundal placenta. Lower segment caesarean section was donefor cephalopelvic disproportion with preeclampsia. A female baby wasdelivered weighing 2.4 kg, with apgar score of 6/10 – 8/10. The placentawas delivered by control cord traction. On the fundus 25% of placenta wasalready separated and 500 ml of old retro placental clots were found. Itwas abruption placentae (concealed type), the uterus was bluish/purplishcolor, which was diffuse on fundal area and effusions of blood were alsoseen beneath the tubal serosa. After delivery of the baby uterus was wellcontracted 20 weeks size, bilateral ovaries were normal
Meson Thermalization in Various Dimensions
In gauge/gravity duality framework the thermalization of mesons in strongly
coupled (p+1)-dimensional gauge theories is studied for a general Dp-Dq system,
q>=p, using the flavour Dq-brane as a probe. Thermalization corresponds to the
horizon formation on the flavour Dq-brane. We calculate the thermalization
time-scale due to a time-dependent change in the baryon number chemical
potential, baryon injection in the field theory. We observe that for such a
general system it has a universal behaviour depending only on the t'Hooft
coupling constant and the two parameters which describe how we inject baryons
into the system. We show that this universal behaviour is independent of the
details of the theory whether it is conformal and/or supersymmetric.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figure
ORMDL3 expression in ASM regulates hypertrophy, hyperplasia via TPM1 and TPM4, and contractility
ORM1-like 3 (ORMDL3) has strong genetic linkage to childhood onset asthma. To determine whether ORMDL3 selective expression in airway smooth muscle (ASM) influences ASM function, we used Cre-loxP techniques to generate transgenic mice (hORMDL3Myh11eGFP-cre), which express human ORMDL3 selectively in smooth muscle cells. In vitro studies of ASM cells isolated from the bronchi of hORMDL3Myh11eGFP-cre mice demonstrated that they developed hypertrophy (quantitated by FACS and image analysis), developed hyperplasia (assessed by BrdU incorporation), and expressed increased levels of tropomysin proteins TPM1 and TPM4. siRNA knockdown of TPM1 or TPM4 demonstrated their importance to ORMDL3-mediated ASM proliferation but not hypertrophy. In addition, ASM derived from hORMDL3Myh11eGFP-cre mice had increased contractility to histamine in vitro, which was associated with increased levels of intracellular Ca2+; increased cell surface membrane Orai1 Ca2+ channels, which mediate influx of Ca2+ into the cytoplasm; and increased expression of ASM contractile genes sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase 2b and smooth muscle 22. In vivo studies of hORMDL3Myh11eGFP-cre mice demonstrated that they had a spontaneous increase in ASM and airway hyperreactivity (AHR). ORMDL3 expression in ASM thus induces changes in ASM (hypertrophy, hyperplasia, increased contractility), which may explain the contribution of ORMDL3 to the development of AHR in childhood onset asthma, which is highly linked to ORMDL3 on chromosome 17q12-21
Aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) gene as a positional and functional candidate for type 2 diabetes and prediabetic intermediate traits: Mutation detection, case-control studies, and gene expression analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>ARNT, a member of the basic helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors, is located on human chromosome 1q21–q24, a region which showed well replicated linkage to type 2 diabetes. We hypothesized that common polymorphisms in the <it>ARNT </it>gene might increase the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes through impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We selected 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms to tag common variation across the <it>ARNT </it>gene. Additionally we searched for novel variants in functional coding domains in European American and African American samples. Case-control studies were performed in 191 European American individuals with type 2 diabetes and 187 nondiabetic European American control individuals, and in 372 African American individuals with type 2 diabetes and 194 African American control individuals. Metabolic effects of <it>ARNT </it>variants were examined in 122 members of 26 European American families from Utah and in 225 unrelated individuals from Arkansas. Gene expression was tested in 8 sibling pairs discordant for type 2 diabetes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No nonsynonymous variants or novel polymorphisms were identified. No SNP was associated with type 2 diabetes in either African Americans or European Americans, but among nondiabetic European American individuals, <it>ARNT </it>SNPs rs188970 and rs11204735 were associated with acute insulin response (AIR<sub>g</sub>; p =< 0.005). SNP rs2134688 interacted with body mass index to alter β-cell compensation to insulin resistance (disposition index; p = 0.004). No significant difference in <it>ARNT </it>mRNA levels was observed in transformed lymphocytes from sibling pairs discordant for type 2 diabetes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Common <it>ARNT </it>variants are unlikely to explain the linkage signal on chromosome 1q, but may alter insulin secretion in nondiabetic subjects. Our studies cannot exclude a role for rare variants or variants of small (< 1.6) effect size.</p
Stringy effects in black hole decay
We compute the low energy decay rates of near-extremal three(four) charge
black holes in five(four) dimensional N=4 string theory to sub-leading order in
the large charge approximation. This involves studying stringy corrections to
scattering amplitudes of a scalar field off a black hole. We adapt and use
recently developed techniques to compute such amplitudes as near-horizon
quantities. We then compare this with the corresponding calculation in the
microscopic configuration carrying the same charges as the black hole. We find
perfect agreement between the microscopic and macroscopic calculations; in the
cases we study, the zero energy limit of the scattering cross section is equal
to four times the Wald entropy of the black hole.Comment: 32 page
Non Abelian Geometrical Tachyon
We investigate the dynamics of a pair of coincident D5 branes in the
background of NS5 branes. It has been proposed by Kutasov that the system
with a single probing D-brane moving radially in this background is dual to the
tachyonic DBI action for a non-BPS Dp brane. We extend this proposal to the
non-abelian case and find that the duality still holds provided one promotes
the radial direction to a matrix valued field associated with a non-abelian
geometric tachyon and a particular parametrization for the transverse scalar
fields is chosen. The equations of motion of a pair of coincident D5 branes
moving in the NS5 background are determined. Analytic and numerical solutions
for the pair are found in certain simplified cases in which the U(2) symmetry
is broken to corresponding to a small transverse separation
of the pair. For certain range of parameters these solutions describe periodic
motion of the centre of mass of the pair 'bouncing off' a finite sized throat

Triplet-Singlet Spin Relaxation via Nuclei in a Double Quantum Dot
The spin of a confined electron, when oriented originally in some direction,
will lose memory of that orientation after some time. Physical mechanisms
leading to this relaxation of spin memory typically involve either coupling of
the electron spin to its orbital motion or to nuclear spins. Relaxation of
confined electron spin has been previously measured only for Zeeman or exchange
split spin states, where spin-orbit effects dominate relaxation, while spin
flips due to nuclei have been observed in optical spectroscopy studies. Using
an isolated GaAs double quantum dot defined by electrostatic gates and direct
time domain measurements, we investigate in detail spin relaxation for
arbitrary splitting of spin states. Results demonstrate that electron spin
flips are dominated by nuclear interactions and are slowed by several orders of
magnitude when a magnetic field of a few millitesla is applied. These results
have significant implications for spin-based information processing
Partitioning of on-demand electron pairs
We demonstrate the high fidelity splitting of electron pairs emitted on
demand from a dynamic quantum dot by an electronic beam splitter. The fidelity
of pair splitting is inferred from the coincidence of arrival in two detector
paths probed by a measurement of the partitioning noise. The emission
characteristic of the on-demand electron source is tunable from electrons being
partitioned equally and independently to electron pairs being split with a
fidelity of 90%. For low beam splitter transmittance we further find evidence
of pair bunching violating statistical expectations for independent fermions
Logarithmic Corrections to Schwarzschild and Other Non-extremal Black Hole Entropy in Different Dimensions
Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic
corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and
gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string
theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in
different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes
and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These
results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory
if the latter is able to give an independent computation of the entropy of
non-extremal black holes from microscopic description. For Schwarzschild black
holes in four space-time dimensions the macroscopic result seems to disagree
