Bottom production in Photon and Pomeron -- induced interactions at the LHC

In this paper we present a detailed comparison of the bottom production in gluon -- gluon, photon -- gluon, photon -- photon, pomeron -- gluon, pomeron -- pomeron and pomeron -- photon interactions at the LHC. The transverse momentum, pseudo -- rapidity and ξ\xi dependencies of the cross sections are calculated at LHC energy using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo (FPMC), which allows to obtain realistic predictions for the bottom production with one or two leading intact protons. Moreover, predictions for the the kinematical range probed by the LHCb Collaboration are also presented. Our results indicate that the analysis of the single diffractive events is feasible using the Run I LHCb data.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Version published in Physical Review

A power management strategy for a stand-alone photovoltaic/fuel cell energy system for a 1kW application

    Get PDF
In this paper a power management strategy is presented for a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV)/fuel cell (FC) energy system. PV is the primary power source of the system and an FC-electrolyzer combination is used as a backup and a long-term storage system. The energy in the hybrid system is balanced by the common dc bus voltage regulation. A simple hysteresis voltage control is used for dc bus voltage regulation. In this way, the fuel cell and the electrolyzer can be protected from unnecessary utilization or irregular operation (reduction of frequent start-ups and shutdowns). Simulation results obtained using Matlab and Simulink are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm

Performance of a solar-hydrogen stand-alone system for residential applications

    Get PDF
Hydrogen, as an energy storage medium, is considered a promising solution to overcome the limitation of intermittent renewable energy sources. In this paper, a residential scale solar-hydrogen based stand-alone energy system is designed, modelled and the simulated system performance under real end-use load, representative of standard European domestic electrical energy consumption, and meteorological conditions is analyzed. The sun is the primary energy source of the system and a fuel cell-electrolyzer combination is used as a backup and a long-term storage system. A battery bank is also used as energy buffer and for short time storage. Matlab/Simulink® is used for the overall system modelling and simulation. The results show that the designed solar-hydrogen system is in principle capable of operating autonomously and in a sustainable manner. The designed system is able to convert 7.6% of the total energy irradiated in one year

Selection of rice genotypes with greater seedling vigor under controlled conditions.

This study aimed to identify allele sources for seedling vigour in 65 rice genotypes, using the slantboard test in a germination chamber, and to determine the best parameter for evaluating seedling vigour. The experiment was arranged in the randomized block design with three replicate blocks. Root and primary leaf length data were collected from seedlings grown in the dark at 18 degrees C, 15 days after sowing and at 25 degrees C, ten days after sowing. The best performing genotypes for seedling vigour were included in Group 2, which contained red rice accessions. The vigour was best evaluated under controlled conditions (grown at 18 degrees C, 15 days after sowing) through measurements of roots and primary leaves.

Squeezing generation and revivals in a cavity-ion system in contact with a reservoir

We consider a system consisting of a single two-level ion in a harmonic trap, which is localized inside a non-ideal optical cavity at zero temperature and subjected to the action of two external lasers. We are able to obtain an analytical solution for the total density operator of the system and show that squeezing in the motion of the ion and in the cavity field is generated. We also show that complete revivals of the states of the motion of the ion and of the cavity field occur periodically.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

Development of rice lines with gene introgression from the wild Oryza glumaepatula by the AB-QTL methodology.

Wild rice of the species Oryza glumaepatula is found Brazil and has been used to broaden the genetic basis of irrigated rice populations in Embrapa breeding programmes. The objective of this study was to demonstrate and discuss approaches used in the development of Oryza sativa lines containing genes transferred from Oryza glumaepatula, resulting in introgression lines with a broader genetic basis and high yield. First of all, genes were transferred from the wild species to cultivated rice by the AB-QTL methodology. Eighteen families were selected using QTL analysis and agronomical performance data. After the heterosis test, the families CNAi 9020 and CNAi 9024 were selected and submitted to microsatellite marker-assisted selection. Thirty-five lines were then selected with high plant vigour, high tiller and panicle number per plant, high grain yield of the main crop, and a strong regrowth capacity which makes the use of ratoons a feasible alternative

Comparative linkage mapping of Oryza glumaepatulaand Oryza sativa interspecific crosses based on microsatellite and expressed sequence tag markers.

    Get PDF
Molecular linkage maps representing the rice genome have been an important tool for breeding programs because they allow the elucidation of polygenic traits and are an efficient tool for monitoring wild introgressions in interspecific crosses. Common markers among rice genetic maps are important in defining the homology of chromosomes and the synteny between genomic target regions. We used 148 markers (expressed sequence tags, microsatellites and single nucleotide polymorphisms) to construct a molecular linkage map based on co-dominant markers for an interspecific backcross population using a wild rice ( Oryza glumaepatula) from Brazil and performed a comparative analysis with other interspecific maps. The comparative analysis revealed a Spearman correlation index of 0.86 for marker order conservation to a previous map constructed for an interspecific cross using the same wild parent. Approximately 90% of markers common to other interspecific maps kept the same order. These results indicate that it will be possible to generate a unique genetic map using the wild donor and that it may be a helpful tool for breeding programs because plants derived from different interspecific populations can be rapidly scanned using markers associated with useful wild traits
