As relações diplomáticas entre Alemanha e Brasil, no período de 1937 a 1942

This article discusses the diplomatic, political and military relations between Germany and Brazil from 1937 to 1942. The basis for research was the military, diplomatic and political documentation found at the German National Archive (Bundesarchiv), in the section that contains the documents of the historical period identified as Reich (Abteilung Deutsches Reich), the military section (Abteilung Militärarchiv) and at The Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). The diplomatic, political and military relations between the two countries in that period were not continuous, as the foreign policy was guided by the prevailing circumstances rather than by an ideological continuity. From 1939 onwards, they were influenced by the reality of war. The theoretical-methodological contributions of political history, discourse analysis through intertextuality and at the discussions on foreign relations were used to conduct the research project and to handle the sources.Key words: foreign relations, Vargas government, III Reich.O artigo aborda as relações diplomáticas, políticas e militares entre Alemanha e Brasi, no período de 1937 a 1942. As relações diplomáticas, políticas e militares entre os dois países, nesse período, foram caracterizadas por descontinuidades, isto é, a política externa era guiada pelas circunstâncias e não por uma continuidade ideológica. A partir de 1939, quando se iniciou a guerra, também houve as interferências da realidade da guerra. Relações diplomáticas entre Brasil e Alemanha - dezembro de 1937 a julho de 1939

The following text introduces the diplomatic relationship between Germany and Brazil. Until 1937 the relation between the two countries was very intensive; however from that year ahead it started to decline, culminating to war declaration on August 1942. The current article innovates and shows to be singular, comparing to the already existing texts, because explores the subject under discussion, based on the German point of view related to Brazil and based on the diplomatic documentation researched at archives in Germany. This article explores the timeline between December 1937 and July 1938, covering the proceedings of the ambassador Karl Ritter and also the period which no German ambassador was acting in Brazil.O presente texto aborda as relações diplomáticas entre a Alemanha e o Brasil que, até 1937, eram intensas e que, a partir de então, tiveram um constante declínio, chegando à declaração de guerra, em agosto de 1942. O trabalho inverte a ótica de análise usual da historiografia brasileira, ou seja, investiga as relações diplomáticas da Alemanha em relação ao Brasil, baseando-se na documentação diplomática alemã. Este artigo contempla a atuação do embaixador Karl Ritter e do período no qual não havia embaixador alemão atuando no Brasil, isto é, de dezembro de 1937 a julho de 1938

1942 – Brazil breaks diplomatic relations and declares war on Germany. How did it happen?

The present study addresses issues from the conjuncture regarding the rupture of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Germany on January, 1942 until the Brazilian declaration of war in August of that same year. This theme was researched based on German diplomatic and military documentation. Ao trabalhar com este tema utilizou-se a documentação militar e diplomática alemã.
