Cofibrant operads and universal E∞ operads
AbstractWe introduce various homotopy structures on the category of operads, which shed some light into the homotopy theoretic nature of the barconstruction WB of an operad, the whiskering process for operads and the Σ-freeness condition. Using the lifting property of cofibrant objects, we construct E∞ operads A which are universal: any E∞-structure lifts to an A-structure, canonically up to homotopy through A-structures
Neutral perfect fluids of Majumdar-type in general relativity
We consider the extension of the Majumdar-type class of static solutions for
the Einstein-Maxwell equations, proposed by Ida to include charged perfect
fluid sources. We impose the equation of state and discuss
spherically symmetric solutions for the linear potential equation satisfied by
the metric. In this particular case the fluid charge density vanishes and we
locate the arising neutral perfect fluid in the intermediate region defined by
two thin shells with respective charges and . With its innermost flat
and external (Schwarzschild) asymptotically flat spacetime regions, the
resultant condenser-like geometries resemble solutions discussed by Cohen and
Cohen in a different context. We explore this relationship and point out an
exotic gravitational property of our neutral perfect fluid. We mention possible
continuations of this study to embrace non-spherically symmetric situations and
higher dimensional spacetimes.Comment: 9 page
Topological representations of matroid maps
The Topological Representation Theorem for (oriented) matroids states that
every (oriented) matroid can be realized as the intersection lattice of an
arrangement of codimension one homotopy spheres on a homotopy sphere. In this
paper, we use a construction of Engstr\"om to show that structure-preserving
maps between matroids induce topological mappings between their
representations; a result previously known only in the oriented case.
Specifically, we show that weak maps induce continuous maps and that the
process is a functor from the category of matroids with weak maps to the
homotopy category of topological spaces. We also give a new and conceptual
proof of a result regarding the Whitney numbers of the first kind of a matroid.Comment: Final version, 21 pages, 8 figures; Journal of Algebraic

The leading particle effect from light quark fragmentation in charm hadroproduction
The asymmetry of and meson production in scattering
observed by the E791 experiment is a typical phenomenon known as the leading
particle effect in charm hadroproducton. We show that the phenomenon can be
explained by the effect of light quark fragmentation into charmed hadrons
(LQF). Meanwhile, the size of the LQF effect is estimated from data of the E791
experiment.
A comparison is made with the estimate of the LQF effect from prompt
like-sign dimuon rate in neutrino experiments. The influence of the LQF effect
on the measurement of nucleon strange distribution asymmetry from charged
current charm production processes is briefly discussed.Comment: 6 latex pages, 1 figure, to appear in EPJ
Breath pacing system and method for pacing the respiratory activity of a subject
To provide a breath pacing system and a corresponding method for pacing the respiratory activity of a subject that provide the possibility to adapt the output signal to the respiration characteristics of the subject automatically and effectively a breath pacing system (10) for pacing the respiratory activity of a subject and a respective method is proposed, comprising: an input unit (14) for generating or determining an input signal related to a respiration characteristic of a subject, a signal analyzing unit (16) provided to recognize a signal pattern within the input signal, and an output unit (12) for outputting output signals corresponding to a desired breathing sequence, wherein said output unit (12) is provided to be activated, upon a starting signal, to output a sequence of output signals comprising a signal pattern related to a previously recognized signal pattern
Parton distributions in the virtual photon target up to NNLO in QCD
Parton distributions in the virtual photon target are investigated in
perturbative QCD up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). In the case
, where () is the mass squared of the
probe (target) photon, parton distributions can be predicted completely up to
the NNLO, but they are factorisation-scheme-dependent. We analyse parton
distributions in two different factorisation schemes, namely and
schemes, and discuss their scheme dependence. We show that
the factorisation-scheme dependence is characterised by the large-
behaviours of quark distributions. Gluon distribution is predicted to be very
small in absolute value except in the small- region.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, version to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
Magnetic Fields, Relativistic Particles, and Shock Waves in Cluster Outskirts
It is only now, with low-frequency radio telescopes, long exposures with
high-resolution X-ray satellites and gamma-ray telescopes, that we are
beginning to learn about the physics in the periphery of galaxy clusters. In
the coming years, Sunyaev-Zeldovich telescopes are going to deliver further
great insights into the plasma physics of these special regions in the
Universe. The last years have already shown tremendous progress with detections
of shocks, estimates of magnetic field strengths and constraints on the
particle acceleration efficiency. X-ray observations have revealed shock fronts
in cluster outskirts which have allowed inferences about the microphysical
structure of shocks fronts in such extreme environments. The best indications
for magnetic fields and relativistic particles in cluster outskirts come from
observations of so-called radio relics, which are megaparsec-sized regions of
radio emission from the edges of galaxy clusters. As these are difficult to
detect due to their low surface brightness, only few of these objects are
known. But they have provided unprecedented evidence for the acceleration of
relativistic particles at shock fronts and the existence of muG strength fields
as far out as the virial radius of clusters. In this review we summarise the
observational and theoretical state of our knowledge of magnetic fields,
relativistic particles and shocks in cluster outskirts.Comment: 34 pages, to be published in Space Science Review
