Improved facilities for marine biology in East Africa
In 1967 the then University College of Dar es Salaam built a small laboratory on the shore at Kunduchi, 16 km from the
main campus and 24 km north of Dar es Salaam. This was used for undergraduate field courses, and as a base for staff from the University to carry out research. It soon
became apparent that the urgent need for studies of the marine environment in the East African area, and the lack of existing facilities, necessitated the development of the Kunduchi Marine Biology station into a research establishment with its own staff of full time scientists. This operation began in 1970: necessary structural modifications have been made to the building, staff have been recruited, and the station has been equipped with an adequate range of field and laboratory apparatus. A varied programme of research is now actively under way
AdS Taub-Nut Space and the O(N) Vector Model on a Squashed 3-Sphere
In this note, motivated by the Klebanov-Polyakov conjecture we investigate
the strongly coupled O(N) vector model at large on a squashed three-sphere
and its holographic relation to bulk gravity on asymptotically locally
spaces. We present analytical results for the action of the field theory as the
squashing parameter , when the boundary becomes effectively one
dimensional. The dual bulk geometry is AdS-Taub-NUT space in the corresponding
limit. In this limit we solve the theory exactly and show that the action of
the strongly coupled boundary theory scales as .
This result is remarkably close to the scaling of the
Einstein gravity action for AdS-Taub-NUT space. These results explain the
numerical agreement presented in hep-th/0503238, and the soft logarithmic
departure is interpreted as a prediction for the contribution due to higher

Condensed matter and AdS/CFT
I review two classes of strong coupling problems in condensed matter physics,
and describe insights gained by application of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The
first class concerns non-zero temperature dynamics and transport in the
vicinity of quantum critical points described by relativistic field theories. I
describe how relativistic structures arise in models of physical interest,
present results for their quantum critical crossover functions and
magneto-thermoelectric hydrodynamics. The second class concerns symmetry
breaking transitions of two-dimensional systems in the presence of gapless
electronic excitations at isolated points or along lines (i.e. Fermi surfaces)
in the Brillouin zone. I describe the scaling structure of a recent theory of
the Ising-nematic transition in metals, and discuss its possible connection to

Dilaton gravity approach to three dimensional Lifshitz black hole
The z=3 Lifshitz black hole is an exact black hole solution to the new
massive gravity in three dimensions. In order to understand this black hole
clearly, we perform a dimensional reduction to two dimensional dilaton gravity
by utilizing the circular symmetry. Considering the linear dilaton, we find the
same Lifshitz black hole in two dimensions. This implies that all thermodynamic
quantities of the z=3 Lifshitz black hole could be obtained from its
corresponding black hole in two dimensions. As a result, we derive the
temperature, mass, heat capacity, Bekesnstein-Hawking entropy, and free energy.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in EPJ
Gravitational quasinormal modes of AdS black branes in d spacetime dimensions
The AdS/CFT duality has established a mapping between quantities in the bulk
AdS black-hole physics and observables in a boundary finite-temperature field
theory. Such a relationship appears to be valid for an arbitrary number of
spacetime dimensions, extrapolating the original formulations of Maldacena's
correspondence. In the same sense properties like the hydrodynamic behavior of
AdS black-hole fluctuations have been proved to be universal. We investigate in
this work the complete quasinormal spectra of gravitational perturbations of
-dimensional plane-symmetric AdS black holes (black branes). Holographically
the frequencies of the quasinormal modes correspond to the poles of two-point
correlation functions of the field-theory stress-energy tensor. The important
issue of the correct boundary condition to be imposed on the gauge-invariant
perturbation fields at the AdS boundary is studied and elucidated in a fully
-dimensional context. We obtain the dispersion relations of the first few
modes in the low-, intermediate- and high-wavenumber regimes. The sound-wave
(shear-mode) behavior of scalar (vector)-type low-frequency quasinormal mode is
analytically and numerically confirmed. These results are found employing both

Absorption cross section in Lifshitz black hole
We derive the absorption cross section of a minimally coupled scalar in the
Lifshitz black hole obtained from the new massive gravity. The absorption cross
section reduces to the horizon area in the low energy and massless limit of
s-wave mode propagation, indicating that the Lifshitz black hole also satisfies

Phase transitions for the Lifshitz black holes
We study possibility of phase transitions between Lifshitz black holes and
other configurations by using free energies explicitly. A phase transition
between Lifshitz soliton and Lifshitz black hole might not occur in three
dimensions. We find that a phase transition between Lifshitz and BTZ black
holes unlikely occurs because they have different asymptotes. Similarly, we
point out that any phase transition between Lifshitz and black branes unlikely
occurs in four dimensions since they have different asymptotes. This is
consistent with a necessary condition for taking a phase transition in the

Non-relativistic metrics with extremal limits
We present solutions of type IIB supergravity with z=2 Schrodinger
asymptotics that admit an extremal limit, i.e. the black hole horizon has a
double zero. These solutions are obtained as TsT transformations of the charged
planar black hole in AdS_5 \times S^5. Unlike the uncharged solution, the
Ramond-Ramond two-form is turned on. We study the thermodynamic properties of
these new solutions, and we show that the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy
density is 1/4\pi even in the extremal limit. We also consider the
TsT-transformed soliton and show that, for a special radius of the compact
circle, there is a confinement-deconfinement phase transition at zero

Ecological distribution and population structure of Acantholobulus schmitti (Rathbun, 1930) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Xanthoidea) on the southeastern Brazilian coast
This investigation analyzed the ecological distribution and population structure of A. schmitti on the southeastern coast of Brazil. Crabs were sampled monthly from January 1998 to December 1999 at the following bays: Ubatumirim (UBM), Ubatuba (UBA) and Mar Virado (MV). Water and sediment samples were also collected from all sampling sites for an analysis of environmental factors. Acantholobus schmitti was most abundant at UBM (224), followed by UBA (154) and MV (23) but its abundance showed no association with the environmental factors analyzed. The low abundance of these crabs in MV may be due to the high wave action that moved biodetritic material accumulated on the bottom and frequently removed small crabs from their sheltered positions among the shell fragments. The individuals captured included 269 males and 132 females, of which only 4 specimens were brooding females. Juvenile recruitment occurred throughout the year, but was less intense in the spring. The major abundance of individuals as well as of ovigerous females occurred during 1999, when the entrance of the South Atlantic Central Waters (SACW) was stronger than in previous year.
