World-sheet Instantons via the Myers Effect and N=1^* Quiver Superpotentials
In this note we explore the stringy interpretation of non-perturbative
effects in N=1^* deformations of the A_{k-1} quiver models. For certain types
of deformations we argue that the massive vacua are described by Nk fractional
D3-branes at the orbifold polarizing into k concentric 5-brane spheres each
carrying fractional brane charge. The polarization of the D3-branes induces a
polarization of D-instantons into string world-sheets wrapped on the Myers
spheres. We show that the superpotentials in these models are indeed generated
by these world-sheet instantons. We point out that for certain parameter values
the condensates yield the exact superpotential for a relevant deformation of
the Klebanov-Witten conifold theory.Comment: 24 pages, JHEP, some small errors and typos correcte
Efficiency of the dynamical mechanism
The most extreme starbursts occur in galaxy mergers, and it is now
acknowledged that dynamical triggering has a primary importance in star
formation. This triggering is due partly to the enhanced velocity dispersion
provided by gravitational instabilities, such as density waves and bars, but
mainly to the radial gas flows they drive, allowing large amounts of gas to
condense towards nuclear regions in a small time scale. Numerical simulations
with several gas phases, taking into account the feedback to regulate star
formation, have explored the various processes, using recipes like the Schmidt
law, moderated by the gas instability criterion. May be the most fundamental
parameter in starbursts is the availability of gas: this sheds light on the
amount of external gas accretion in galaxy evolution. The detailed mechanisms
governing gas infall in the inner parts of galaxy disks are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to be published in "Starbursts - From 30 Doradus

Reverse geometric engineering of singularities
One can geometrically engineer supersymmetric field theories theories by
placing D-branes at or near singularities. The opposite process is described,
where one can reconstruct the singularities from quiver theories. The
description is in terms of a noncommutative quiver algebra which is constructed
from the quiver diagram and the superpotential. The center of this
noncommutative algebra is a commutative algebra, which is the ring of
holomorphic functions on a variety V. If certain algebraic conditions are met,
then the reverse geometric engineering produces V as the geometry that D-branes
probe. It is also argued that the identification of V is invariant under
Seiberg dualities.Comment: 17 pages, Latex. v2: updates reference
Orthorhombically Mixed s and d Wave Superconductivity and Josephson Tunneling
The effect of orthorhombicity on Josephson tunneling in high T
superconductors such as YBCO is studied for both single crystals and highly
twinned crystals. It is shown that experiments on highly twinned crystals
experimentally determine the symmetry of the superconducting twin boundaries
(which can be either even or odd with respect to a reflection in the twinning
plane). Conversely, Josephson experiments on highly twinned crystals can not
experimentally determine whether the superconductivity is predominantly
-wave or predominantly -wave. The direct experimental determination of
the order-parameter symmetry by Josephson tunneling in YBCO thus comes from the
relatively few experiments which have been carried out on untwinned single
crystals.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX file, 1 figure available on request

Flat Information Geometries in Black Hole Thermodynamics
The Hessian of either the entropy or the energy function can be regarded as a
metric on a Gibbs surface. For two parameter families of asymptotically flat
black holes in arbitrary dimension one or the other of these metrics are flat,
and the state space is a flat wedge. The mathematical reason for this is traced
back to the scale invariance of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The picture of
state space that we obtain makes some properties such as the occurence of
divergent specific heats transparent.Comment: 14 pages, one figure. Dedicated to Rafael Sorkin's birthda
The AdS/QCD Correspondence: Still Undelivered
We consider the particle spectrum and event shapes in large N gauge theories
in different regimes of the short-distance 't Hooft coupling, lambda. The
mesons in the small lambda limit should have a Regge spectrum in order to agree
with perturbation theory, while generically the large lambda theories with
gravity duals produce spectra reminiscent of KK modes. We argue that these
KK-like states are qualitatively different from QCD modes: they are deeply
bound states which are sensitive to short distance interactions rather than the
flux tube-like states expected in asymptotically free, confining gauge
theories. In addition, we also find that the characteristic event shapes for
the large lambda theories with gravity duals are close to spherical, very
different from QCD-like (small lambda, small N) and Nambu-Goto-like (small
lambda, large N) theories which have jets. This observation is in agreement
with the conjecture of Strassler on event shapes in large 't Hooft coupling
theories, which was recently proved by Hofman and Maldacena for the conformal
case. This conclusion does not change even when considering soft-wall
backgrounds in the gravity dual. The picture that emerges is the following:
theories with small and large lambda are qualitatively different, while
theories with small and large N are qualitatively similar. Thus it seems that
it is the relative smallness of the 't Hooft coupling in QCD that prevents a
reliable AdS/QCD correspondence from emerging, and that reproducing
characteristic QCD-like behavior will require genuine stringy dynamics to be
incorporated into any putative dual theory.Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures; references added, minor changes, history

Conservative Constraints on Dark Matter from the Fermi-LAT Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background Spectrum
We examine the constraints on final state radiation from Weakly Interacting
Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter candidates annihilating into various
standard model final states, as imposed by the measurement of the isotropic
diffuse gamma-ray background by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi
Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. The expected isotropic diffuse signal from dark
matter annihilation has contributions from the local Milky Way (MW) as well as
from extragalactic dark matter. The signal from the MW is very insensitive to
the adopted dark matter profile of the halos, and dominates the signal from
extragalactic halos, which is sensitive to the low mass cut-off of the halo
mass function. We adopt a conservative model for both the low halo mass
survival cut-off and the substructure boost factor of the Galactic and
extragalactic components, and only consider the primary final state radiation.
This provides robust constraints which reach the thermal production
cross-section for low mass WIMPs annihilating into hadronic modes. We also
reanalyze limits from HESS observations of the Galactic Ridge region using a
conservative model for the dark matter halo profile. When combined with the
HESS constraint, the isotropic diffuse spectrum rules out all interpretations
of the PAMELA positron excess based on dark matter annihilation into two lepton
final states. Annihilation into four leptons through new intermediate states,
although constrained by the data, is not excluded.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. v3: minor revisions, matches version to appear

Existential Communication and Leadership
The aim of this article is to introduce and explain a number of important existentialist philosophers and concepts that we believe can contribute to a critical approach to leadership theory. Emphasis is placed on understanding the nature of communication from an existentialist perspective and so Jaspers' conceptualization of existential communication is introduced along with important related concepts that may be regarded as important facets of leader communication including Being-in-the-world, the Other, intersubjectivity, dialogue and indirect communication. Particular attention is paid to Buber's ideas on communication as relationship and dialogue. Throughout, reference is made to contemporary, and what is often regarded as orthodox, thinking regarding the centrality of communication to leadership practice as a means by which to highlight the salience of an existentialist analysis
A Note on Conserved Charges of Asymptotically Flat and Anti-de Sitter Spaces in Arbitrary Dimensions
The calculation of conserved charges of black holes is a rich problem, for
which many methods are known. Until recently, there was some controversy on the
proper definition of conserved charges in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS)
spaces in arbitrary dimensions. This paper provides a systematic and explicit
Hamiltonian derivation of the energy and the angular momenta of both
asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes in any dimension D bigger
or equal to 4. This requires as a first step a precise determination of the
asymptotic conditions of the metric and of its conjugate momentum. These
conditions happen to be achieved in ellipsoidal coordinates adapted to the
rotating solutions. The asymptotic symmetry algebra is found to be isomorphic
either to the Poincare algebra or to the so(D-1, 2) algebra, as expected. In
the asymptotically flat case, the boundary conditions involve a generalization
of the parity conditions, introduced by Regge and Teitelboim, which are
necessary to make the angular momenta finite. The charges are explicitly
computed for Kerr and Kerr-AdS black holes for arbitrary D and they are shown
to be in agreement with thermodynamical arguments.Comment: 27 pages; v2 : references added, minor corrections; v3 : replaced to

Deformations of calibrated D-branes in flux generalized complex manifolds
We study massless deformations of generalized calibrated cycles, which
describe, in the language of generalized complex geometry, supersymmetric
D-branes in N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with fluxes. We find that the
deformations are classified by the first cohomology group of a Lie algebroid
canonically associated to the generalized calibrated cycle, seen as a
generalized complex submanifold with respect to the integrable generalized
complex structure of the bulk. We provide examples in the SU(3) structure case
and in a `genuine' generalized complex structure case. We discuss cases of
lifting of massless modes due to world-volume fluxes, background fluxes and a
generalized complex structure that changes type.Comment: 52 pages, added references, added comment on ellipticity in appendix
