    Grid Metadata Lifetime Control in ActOn

    In the Semantic Grid, metadata, as ïŹrst class citizens, should be maintained up to-date in a cost-effective manner. This includes maxi missing the automation of different aspects of the metadata lifecycle, managing the evolution and change of metadata in distributed contexts, and synchronizing adequately the evolution of all these related entities. In this paper, we introduce a semantic model and its operations which is designed for supporting dynamic metadata management in Active Ontology (Act On), a semantic information integration approach for highly dynamic information sources. Finally, we illustrate the Act On-based metadata lifetime control by EGEE examples

    Can CPT Symmetry Be Tested With K^0 vs \bar{K}^0--> \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 Decays?

    We show that the CP-violating effect in K^0 vs \bar K^0-->\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 decays differs from that in K_{\rm L}-->\pi^+\pi^-, K_{\rm L}-->\pi^0\pi^0 or the semileptonic K_{\rm L} transitions, if there exists CPT violation in K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. A delicate measurement of this difference in the KTeV experiment and at the \phi factory will provide a new test of CPT symmetry in the neutral kaon system.Comment: RevTex 6 pages. Phys. Rev.     Fabrication of magnetic atom chips based on FePt

    We describe the design and fabrication of novel all-magnetic atom chips for use in ultracold atom trapping. The considerations leading to the choice of nanocrystalline exchange coupled FePt as best material are discussed. Using stray field calculations, we designed patterns that function as magnetic atom traps. These patterns were realized by spark erosion of FePt foil and e-beam lithography of FePt film. A mirror magneto-optical trap (MMOT) was obtained using the stray field of the foil chip.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Can the Lepton Flavor Mixing Matrix Be Symmetric?

    Current neutrino oscillation data indicate that the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing matrix V is likely to be symmetric about its V_{e3}-V_{\mu 2}-V_{\tau 1} axis. This off-diagonal symmetry corresponds to three pairs of {\it congruent} unitarity triangles in the complex plane.     MADS+: discovery of differential splicing events from Affymetrix exon junction array data

    Motivation: The Affymetrix Human Exon Junction Array is a newly designed high-density exon-sensitive microarray for global analysis of alternative splicing. Contrary to the Affymetrix exon 1.0 array, which only contains four probes per exon and no probes for exon–exon junctions, this new junction array averages eight probes per probeset targeting all exons and exon–exon junctions observed in the human mRNA/EST transcripts, representing a significant increase in the probe density for alternative splicing events. Here, we present MADS+, a computational pipeline to detect differential splicing events from the Affymetrix exon junction array data. For each alternative splicing event, MADS+ evaluates the signals of probes targeting competing transcript isoforms to identify exons or splice sites with different levels of transcript inclusion between two sample groups. MADS+ is used routinely in our analysis of Affymetrix exon junction arrays and has a high accuracy in detecting differential splicing events. For example, in a study of the novel epithelial-specific splicing regulator ESRP1, MADS+ detects hundreds of exons whose inclusion levels are dependent on ESRP1, with a RT-PCR validation rate of 88.5% (153 validated out of 173 tested)
