The Interactions Between Rapeseed Lipoxygenase and Native Polyphenolic Compounds in a Model System

The focus of the present research was to study inhibition of lipoxygenase activity by rapeseed native polyphenols and the interactions between those compounds and the enzyme. The enzyme and polyphenolic compounds (polyphenols, phenolic acids) were extracted from rapeseed (Brassica napus) varieties Aviso and PR45DO3. The total phenolic compounds concentration in tested rapeseed was 1,485–1,691 mg/100 g d.m. (dry matter) and the free phenolic acids content in both rapeseed varieties was about 76 μg/100 g d.m. The isolated proteins showed lipoxygenase activity. Prooxidant properties of phenolic compounds in the presence of lipoxygenase and linoleic acid were observed rather in the case of extracts containing a relatively high concentration of miscellaneous polyphenols. Antioxidant properties were recorded in the case of phenolic acid extracts which contain only 1.4–1.9% of phenolics present in raw phenolic extracts. We propose that the prooxidant effect of phenolic compounds comes from quinone and oxidized polyphenols formation. The observed antioxidant activity of phenolic acid extracts is probably due to their ability to scavenge free radicals formed from linoleic acid. However, reduction of lipoxygenase ferric to ferrous ions, which prevent the activation of the enzyme and inhibited its activity, was also observed

BACterial Hosts for production of Bioactive phenolics from bERRY fruits (BacHBerry) was a 3-year project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union that ran between November 2013 and October 2016. The overall aim of the project was to establish a sustainable and economically-feasible strategy for the production of novel high-value phenolic compounds isolated from berry fruits using bacterial platforms. The project aimed at covering all stages of the discovery and pre-commercialization process, including berry collection, screening and characterization of their bioactive components, identification and functional characterization of the corresponding biosynthetic pathways, and construction of Gram-positive bacterial cell factories producing phenolic compounds. Further activities included optimization of polyphenol extraction methods from bacterial cultures, scale-up of production by fermentation up to pilot scale, as well as societal and economic analyses of the processes. This review article summarizes some of the key findings obtained throughout the duration of the project

W mące i koncentracie białek rzepaku otrzymanych z surowych i parowanych nasion oznaczono zawartość błonnika pokarmowego. W preparatach białkowych oraz w błonniku pokarmowym zanalizowano zawartość Ca i Mg.Crude fibre content of rapeseed meal and protein concentrate, obtained from raw and steamed rapeseed, was determined. Moreover, in the protein concentrate and in crude fibre the levels of calcium and magnesium were measured. The protein concentrate contained more crude fibre than the meal. Polysaccharides accounted in crude fibre from meal for more than 80% of its total composition, and in crude fibre from the protein concentrate for only ca. 70%. Steaming of rapeseed led to an increase in calcium and magnesium contents of crude fibre from meal and decrease in the protein concentrate

W poszczególnych próbach określono poziom suchej masy, ekstrakt ogólny, cukry redukujące i ogółem, kwasy organiczne, tłuszcz, popiół, składniki mineralne, witaminę C, karotenoidy, ß-karoten, tokoferole, witaminę A oraz ilość związków fenolowych. Ustalono, że uprawiane odmiany charakteryzuje szeroka rozpiętość w zawartości poszczególnych składników chemicznych. Owoce odmiany Nadbałtycka przewyższały inne odmiany pod względem zawartości związków biologicznie aktywnych, zwłaszcza związków fenolowych, witaminy C i ogólnego poziomu karotenoidów.Referring to nutritive and therapeutic values of sea-buckthorn, the chemical composition of fruits was investigated in six varieties and hibrids, originating from experimental cultivation of Belorussian Scientific - Research Institute of Pomology, Samochwałowicze near Mińsk, and in one variety savagely growing on the area of north-east Poland (Baltic Sea variety). Strong differentiation of sea- buckthorn fruit varieties was stated in respect of basic biochemical composition as well as in the content of biologically active compounds with antioxidant properties. The contents of dry matter, total extract, reducing sugars, total and organic acids, fat, ash, mineral components, vitamin C, carotenoids, ß-carotene, tocopherols, vitamin A, and the quantity of phenolic compounds were determined in each test. It was stated that the cultivated varieties were characterized by a wide range of chemical component contents. Fruits of Baltic variety exceeded the other varieties in respect of biologically active compounds content, especially the phenolic ones, vitamin C and total level of carotenoids
