Signatures of Energy Flux in Particle Production: A Black Hole Birth Cry and Death Gasp
It is recently argued that if the Hawking radiation process is unitary, then
a black hole's mass cannot be monotonically decreasing. We examine the time
dependent particle count and negative energy flux in the non-trivial conformal
vacuum via the moving mirror approach. A new, exactly unitary solution is
presented which emits a characteristic above-thermal positive energy burst, a
thermal plateau, and negative energy flux. It is found that the characteristic
positive energy flare and thermal plateau is observed in the particle outflow.
However, the results of time dependent particle production show no overt
indication of negative energy flux. Therefore, a black hole's birth cry is
detectable by asymptotic observers via particle count, whereas its death gasp

More on the covariant retarded Green's function for the electromagnetic field in de Sitter spacetime
In a recent paper (Phys. Rev. D78, 084031 (2008), arXiv:0808.0642, Ref. [1])
it was shown in examples that the covariant retarded Green's functions in
particular gauges for electromagnetism and linearized gravity can be used to
reproduce field configurations correctly in spite of the spacelike nature of
past infinity in de Sitter spacetime. In this paper we extend the work of Ref.
[1] concerning the electromagnetic field and show that the covariant retarded
Green's function with an arbitrary value of the gauge parameter reproduces the
electromagnetic field from two opposite charges at antipodal points of de

Statistical Inference using the Morse-Smale Complex
The Morse-Smale complex of a function decomposes the sample space into
cells where is increasing or decreasing. When applied to nonparametric
density estimation and regression, it provides a way to represent, visualize,
and compare multivariate functions. In this paper, we present some statistical
results on estimating Morse-Smale complexes. This allows us to derive new
results for two existing methods: mode clustering and Morse-Smale regression.
We also develop two new methods based on the Morse-Smale complex: a
visualization technique for multivariate functions and a two-sample,

Fiber optic transmission is emerging as an attractive concept in data distribution onboard civil aircraft. Development of an Optical Data Distribution Network for Integrated Avionics and Control Systems for commercial aircraft will provide a data distribution network that gives freedom from EMI-RFI and ground loop problems, eliminates crosstalk and short circuits, provides protection and immunity from lightning induced transients and give a large bandwidth data transmission capability. In addition there is a potential for significantly reducing the weight and increasing the reliability over conventional data distribution networks. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a candidate method for data communication between the various avionic subsystems. With WDM all systems could conceptually communicate with each other without time sharing and requiring complicated coding schemes for each computer and subsystem to recognize a message. However, the state of the art of optical technology limits the application of fiber optics in advanced integrated avionics and control systems. Therefore, it is necessary to address the architecture for a fiber optics data distribution system for integrated avionics and control systems as well as develop prototype components and systems
