Location of geologic structures from interpretation of ERTS-1 imagery, Carbon County, Wyoming
The author has identified the following significant results. Possible geologic structures in the basin sediments of Carbon County and vicinity were located by interpretation of ERTS-1 imagery. These same structures are not evident on existing conventional geologic maps of the area. Subsequent field checks confirmed much of the geologic interpretation, but revealed that two apparent closed structures identified on the ERTS-1 imagery were actually topographic pseudostructures in flat or homoclinal sediments. Stereoscopic coverage (where available) allows the interpreter to avoid such misinterpretations
Conceptual design of the 6 MW Mod-5A wind turbine generator
The General Electric Company, Advanced Energy Programs Department, is designing under DOE/NASA sponsorship the MOD-5A wind turbine system which must generate electricity for 3.75 cent/KWH (1980) or less. During the Conceptual Design Phase, completed in March, 1981, the MOD-5A WTG system size and features were established as a result of tradeoff and optimization studies driven by minimizing the system cost of energy (COE). This led to a 400' rotor diameter size. The MOD-5A system which resulted is defined in this paper along with the operational and environmental factors that drive various portions of the design. Development of weight and cost estimating relationships (WCER's) and their use in optimizing the MOD-5A are discussed. The results of major tradeoff studies are also presented. Subsystem COE contributions for the 100th unit are shown along with the method of computation. Detailed descriptions of the major subsystems are given, in order that the results of the various trade and optimization studies can be more readily visualized
Fluctuations of the Casimir-Polder force between an atom and a conducting wall
We consider the quantum fluctuations of the Casimir-Polder force between a
neutral atom and a perfectly conducting wall in the ground state of the system.
In order to obtain the atom-wall force fluctuation we first define an operator
directly associated to the force experienced by the atom considered as a
polarizable body in an electromagnetic field, and we use a time-averaged force
operator in order to avoid ultraviolet divergences appearing in the fluctuation
of the force. This time-averaged force operator takes into account that any
measurement involves a finite time. We also calculate the Casimir-Polder force
fluctuation for an atom between two conducting walls. Experimental
observability of these Casimir-Polder force fluctuations is also discussed, as
well as the dependence of the relative force fluctuation on the duration of the

Study of shuttle imaging microwave system antenna. Volume 1: Conceptual design
A detailed preliminary design and complete performance evaluation are presented of an 11-channel large aperture scanning radiometer antenna for the shuttle imaging microwave system (SIMS) program. Provisions for interfacing the antenna with the space shuttle orbiter are presented and discussed. A program plan for hardware development and a rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost are also included. The conceptual design of the antenna is presented. It consists of a four-meter diameter parabolic torus main reflector, which is a graphite/epoxy shell supported by a graphite/epoxy truss. A rotating feed wheel assembly supports six Gregorian subreflectors covering the upper eight frequency channels from 6.6 GHz through 118.7 GHz, and two three-channel prime forms feed assemblies for 0.6, 1.4, and 2.7 GHz. The feed wheel assembly also holds the radiometers and power supplies, and a drive system using a 400 Hz synchronous motor is described. The RF analysis of the antenna is performed using physical optics procedures for both the dual reflector Gregorian concept and the single reflector prime focus concept. A unique aberration correcting feed for 2.7 GHz is analyzed. A structural analysis is also included. The analyses indicate that the antenna will meet system requirements
Energy harvesting from vibrations with a nonlinear oscillator
In this paper we present a nonlinear electromagnetic energy harvesting device that has a broadly resonant response. The nonlinearity is generated by a particular arrangement of magnets in conjunction with an iron-cored stator. We show the resonant response of the system to both pure-tone excitation and narrow-band random excitation. In addition to the primary resonance, the super-harmonic resonances of the harvester are also investigated and we show that the corresponding mechanical up-conversion of the excitation frequency may be useful for energy harvesting. The harvester is modeled using a Duffing-type equation and the results compared to the experimental data.</jats:p
Casimir-Polder forces, boundary conditions and fluctuations
We review different aspects of the atom-atom and atom-wall Casimir-Polder
forces. We first discuss the role of a boundary condition on the interatomic
Casimir-Polder potential between two ground-state atoms, and give a physically
transparent interpretation of the results in terms of vacuum fluctuations and
image atomic dipoles. We then discuss the known atom-wall Casimir-Polder force
for ground- and excited-state atoms, using a different method which is also
suited for extension to time-dependent situations. Finally, we consider the
fluctuation of the Casimir-Polder force between a ground-state atom and a
conducting wall, and discuss possible observation of this force fluctuation.Comment: 5 page
Development of a CCD for ultraviolet imaging using a CCD photocathode combination
CCD in the electron-in mode, coupled with a bi-alkali photocathode to produce UV photon conversion, provides the following desirable features: (1) high UV response of the bi-alkali photocathode; (2) excellent imaging quality of a CCD area array; and (3) high signal-to-noise ratio due to the EBS (electron bombarded silicon) gain of the CCD operating in a tube configuration. Cultural selection drives the evolution of human communication systems
Human communication systems evolve culturally, but the evolutionary mechanisms that drive this evolution are not well understood. Against a baseline that communication variants spread in a population following neutral evolutionary dynamics (also known as drift models), we tested the role of two cultural selection models: coordination- and content-biased. We constructed a parametrized mixed probabilistic model of the spread of communicative variants in four 8-person laboratory micro-societies engaged in a simple communication game. We found that selectionist models, working in combination, explain the majority of the empirical data. The best-fitting parameter setting includes an egocentric bias and a content bias, suggesting that participants retained their own previously used communicative variants unless they encountered a superior (content-biased) variant, in which case it was adopted. This novel pattern of results suggests that (i) a theory of the cultural evolution of human communication systems must integrate selectionist models and (ii) human communication systems are functionally adaptive complex systems
