    LED Lighting as Energy Management Tool through Correlation Analysis of Daily Electricity Demand and Supply Curve

    Power industry has restructured in last decades and now it has become a commodity rather than a utility with the maximization of profit as its main purpose. Peak ripples in the electricity demand curve could disturb the economic generation. In developing countries, Electric Supply Companies are unable to meet the existing power demand due to unfeasible and unjustified fuel burning. Therefore, they are left with load shedding as the only Demand side solution. It is a well-known fact that the Light Emitting Diodes (LED) Lighting could be used to conserve electricity. However, LED could also be used as an energy management technique without affecting the comfort level of consumer. Electricity demand and supply curves could be correlated up to 93% through this option. Argument is supported by correlation analysis of estimated daily demand and supply curves of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC). Estimated curves are developed through LED lighting energy conservation analysis on KESC summer and winter demand curves. Finally, from global perspective, LED lighting is not only a remedy for removal of peaks and ripples in demand curve but also a feasible solution for global climate problems through energy conservation and low carbon emissions

    This article investigates possible pathways of habitus change by informal tourism entrepreneurs in Thailand. Bourdieu's concept of habitus is depicted as a person's understanding of the world. Do people adapt their worldview in response to only external stimuli? Through ethnographic fieldwork including participant observations and active semi-structured interviews with 53 participants, this paper identifies a classification of four modes of habitus adaptation: (1) Understanding and appreciating the field and its conditions, (2) Challenging core beliefs systems, (3) Applying a practical sense to ‘objective possibilities’, and, (4) Challenging non-reflective dispositions. We argue that charting the modes of habitus adaptation could help policymakers understand the change processes of informal entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and their willingness to change.</p

This paper makes the case that small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector have the potential to benefit from connections with design research units operating within universities. It points out some of the challenges associated with research and development for SMEs, and argues design research units can allow SMEs to better meet these challenges. Additive Manufacturing is used as an exemplary emerging technology that makes explicit the new possibilities and instability of the contemporary manufacturing landscape. A case study is used to articulate the potentials and limitations of industry and university partnerships in design.     Meridional Transport in the Stratosphere of Jupiter

    The Cassini measurements of C2_2H2_2 and C2_2H6_6 at \sim5 mbar provide a constraint on meridional transport in the stratosphere of Jupiter. We performed a two-dimensional photochemical calculation coupled with mass transport due to vertical and meridional mixing. The modeled profile of C2_2H2_2 at latitudes less than 70^\circ follows the latitude dependence of the solar insolation, while that of C2_2H6_6 shows little latitude dependence, consistent with the measurements. In general, our model study suggests that the meridional transport timescale above 5-10 mbar altitude level is \gtrsim1000 years and the time could be as short as 10 years below 10 mbar level, in order to fit the Cassini measurements. The derived meridional transport timescale above the 5 mbar level is a hundred times longer than that obtained from the spreading of gas-phase molecules deposited after the impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet.     Pressure Line Broadening and Feasibility of CO_2 Profile Retrieval using Near Infrared Observations of an Absorption Line

    Analytic expressions are derived for the transmittance and reflectance of sunlight and their Jacobians for an absorption line with Lorentz line broadening. Rodgers information analysis is applied to calculate the information content, the degrees of freedom and the averaging kernel for a simple atmospheric model to investigate the feasibility of retrieving the profile of CO_2 using near-infrared (NIR) measurements over a single absorption line. The results have implications for the design of future space instruments with high spectral resolution and high signal to noise ratios to obtain global scale information on the CO_2 vertical distribution which is important for inferring the sources, sinks, and transport of CO_2

    Realizations of Real Low-Dimensional Lie Algebras

    Using a new powerful technique based on the notion of megaideal, we construct a complete set of inequivalent realizations of real Lie algebras of dimension no greater than four in vector fields on a space of an arbitrary (finite) number of variables. Our classification amends and essentially generalizes earlier works on the subject. Known results on classification of low-dimensional real Lie algebras, their automorphisms, differentiations, ideals, subalgebras and realizations are reviewed.Comment: LaTeX2e, 39 pages.
