Observations of industrial sulfur flows and implications for Io
The possibility of sulfur flows on the Jovian satellite Io is discussed. Although the primary problem is lack of sufficient information to resolve the issue, interpretations of existing data are hampered by poor knowledge of the thermal properties and rheologic behavior of sulfur flows, especially under conditions present on Io. Relatively few natural sulfur flows occur on Earth and only one has been seen in active flow. However, recent observations of industrial sulfur flows, which are much larger than those produced experimentally, may provide important information concerning natural sulfur flows on both Earth and Io

Surface Profiling of Natural Dust Devils
We present results from the first high-resolution near-surface profiles conducted on dust devil wind fields. These results are integrated with extensive geologic mapping to understand the factors that influence vortex generation and erosive efficacy

A close encounter with a terrestrial dust devil
We report on an extremely well characterised encounter with a terrestrial dust devil, and its comparison with martian dust devils
THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF DILUTE AQUEOUS HYDROCHLORIC ACID SOLUTIONS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES FROM ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE MEASUREMENTS (thesis)
BS>Results of a study of thermodynamic properties of aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions are presented. A hydrogen electrode was used against a silver-silver chloride electrode at 25 to 275 deg C using hydrogen pressure of about 1 atm. and hydrochloric acid concentrations of 0.005 to 1.0 M. Electromotive measurement techniques are described and resulting data are tabulated. (J.R.D.
Investigation of environmental indices from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite
The author has identified the following significant results. Land use change, water quality, and air quality indices have been calculated from analysis of ERTS-1 multispectral scanning imagery and computer compatible tapes. Specifications have been developed and discussed for an ERTS-1 environmental monitoring system which help to serve the information needs of environmental managers at the Federal, state, regional, and local level. General conclusions of the investigation are that ERTS-1 data is very useful in land use mapping and updating to 10-15 categories, and can provide an overall measure of air and water turbidity; however, more and better ground truth and possibly additional spacecraft sensors will be required if specific air and water pollutants are to be quantified from satellite data
Jump at the onset of saltation
We reveal a discontinuous transition in the saturated flux for aeolian
saltation by simulating explicitly particle motion in turbulent flow. The
discontinuity is followed by a coexistence interval with two metastable
solutions. The modification of the wind profile due to momentum exchange
exhibits a second maximum at high shear strength. The saturated flux depends on
the strength of the wind as
Saltation transport on Mars
We present the first calculation of saltation transport and dune formation on
Mars and compare it to real dunes. We find that the rate at which grains are
entrained into saltation on Mars is one order of magnitude higher than on
Earth. With this fundamental novel ingredient, we reproduce the size and
different shapes of Mars dunes, and give an estimate for the wind velocity on
Mars.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Volcanism of the Eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho: A comparative planetary geology-guidebook
The Planetary Geology Field Conference on the central Snake River Plain was conceived and developed to accomplish several objectives. Primarily, field conferences are sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to draw attention to aspects of terrestrial geology that appear to be important in interpreting the origin and evolution of extraterrestrial planetary surfaces. Another aspect is to present results of recent research in a region. A final objective of this conference is to bring together investigators of diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in the Snake River Plain. The Snake River Plain appears to be similar in surface morphology to many volcanic regions on the Moon, Mars, and possibly Mercury. Therefore, the Snake River Plain, in combination with the relatively good state of preservation, the lack of forests or other heavy vegetation, and the good network of jeep trails, is an area nearly ideal for analog studies
