A Comparison of Phycocyanins from Three Different Species of Cyanobacteria Employing Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy
Resonance-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectra are recorded for monomers and trimers of phycocyanin from three different cyanobacteria: Westiellopsis prolifica, Mastigocladus laminosus and Spirulina platensis. It is shown that upon aggregation from monomer to trimer the electronic structures of both the α84 and β84 chromophores are changed. The spectra of the trimers originating from S. platensis and M. laminosus are very similar to each other, but distinctly different from the spectrum of W. prolifica
THE IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERING AND THE ACQUISITION OF SKILLS THROUGH PRACTICE
This study intended to assess the impact of volunteering on society and understand how its practice
allows the acquisition of skills. In addition, it would make the population aware of the value and
importance of the different ways of volunteering. One of the central points of this investigation was to
understand how institutions should recruit and attract volunteers and ultimately how to retain them, by
understanding whether or not the volunteers’ initial motivations (i.e. which attract them) remain
unchanged along time. This study was carried out within the scope of the ENtRANCE Erasmus+
project, by students of the Research Methods and Techniques course integrated in the
Communication Sciences degree at Maia University Institute and had the collaboration of the
Volunteer School, Pista Mágica by contacting its volunteers and clarifying relevant information.
Several scientific articles were analysed, such as [1]; [2]; [3]; [4]; [5] which allowed a first approach to
such topic but with no answers found.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Co‐existing monophasic teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a female dog
Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma, composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females.
This report describes case of co-existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10-year old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge.
Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of
a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well-differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy.
To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a coexisting ovarian monophasic teratoma and
endometrial adenocarcinoma, two rare reproductive neoplasia in dogs
PORTUGUESE ENGAGED RESEARCH AND LEARNING COMMUNITY
The current research was performed within the ENtRANCE Erasmus+ project in order to identify how
may Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEI) provide independent participatory research
support in response to concerns experienced by civil society, namely based on EU societal
challenges. Even though the Biosense project [1] assumed the creation of the first Science Shop in
Portugal, it was only active between 2011 and 2013 and there is still no formal evidence of any other
one. Nevertheless, several Portuguese HEIs already provide informal services on behalf of citizens
and local civil society.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A DLC/diamond bilayer approach for reducing the initial friction towards a highbearing capacity
Sliding contact mechanics is used to account for the net increase of the bearing capacity of high wear-resistant CVD diamond coatings when an outer layer of a DLC lubricant film is deposited on their top surface. Experimental results, namely the critical failure load, taken from reciprocating ball-on-plate tribological testing of such DLC/diamond bilayers, are on the basis of this statement. DC magnetron sputtering was used to grow thin DLC lubricant coatings (non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated
varieties) on the top of CVD diamond films (microcrystalline and nanocrystalline types). The application of the von Mises maximum yield parameter (J2)1/2 criterion demonstrates to be an adequate method for designing low-friction and high-bearing capacity systems for high-demanding tribological applications. Calculation of (J2)1/2 supports that the most significant increase observed on the coatings’ bearing capacity
(from 20 N to 60 N) takes place when microcrystalline diamond is coated by hydrogenated DLC that decreases the initial friction coefficient peak (from 0.76 to 0.41).Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
The Impact of Depression on Patient Outcomes in Hip Arthroscopic Surgery.
Background: Mental health impairments have been shown to negatively affect preoperative self-reported function in patients with various musculoskeletal disorders, including those with femoroacetabular impingement.
Hypothesis: Those with symptoms of depression will have lower self-reported function, more pain, and less satisfaction on initial assessment and at 2-year follow-up than those without symptoms of depression.
Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
Methods: Patients who were enrolled in a multicenter hip arthroscopic surgery registry and had 2-year outcome data available were included in the study. Patients completed the 12-item International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12), visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, and 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) when consenting for surgery. At 2-year follow-up, patients were emailed the iHOT, the VAS, and a rating scale of surgical satisfaction. Initial SF-12 mental component summary (MCS) scores
Results: A total of 781 patients achieved the approximate 2-year milestone (mean follow-up, 735 ± 68 days), with 651 (83%) having 2-year outcome data available. There were 434 (67%) female and 217 (33%) male patients, with a mean age of 35.8 ± 13.0 years and a mean body mass index of 25.4 ± 8.8 kg/m
Conclusion: A large number of patients who underwent hip arthroscopic surgery presented with symptoms of depression, which negatively affected self-reported function, pain levels, and satisfaction on initial assessment and at 2-year follow-up. Surgeons who perform hip arthroscopic surgery may need to identify the symptoms of depression and be aware of the impact that depression can have on surgical outcomes
COMFORT SEAT MODULE - FIRST CLASS COMFORT FOR ALL
The Comfort Seat Module (CSM) is a project developed in the scope of the EDAM focus area of
the MIT – Portugal program, within the Product Design and Development course.
The team members involved in the project come from several Engineering backgrounds and
includes research students and engineering professionals, from different geographical origins.
In this project the team had the purpose of designing and developing a solution, from idea
into concept and then onto a valid product that could potentially be produced and even
marketed. In parallel, the objective was to train the product development competences and
team’s working skills as much as possible, considering the physical distance between the

The importance of motivation in knowledge management in organizations: A study in a Portuguese company
impulsiona a gestão do conhecimento.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
