    NGC 4254: An Act of Harassment Uncovered by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey

    We present an HI map constructed from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey of the surroundings of the strongly asymmetric Virgo cluster Sc galaxy NGC 4254. Noted previously for its lopsided appearance, rich interstellar medium, and extradisk HI emission, NGC 4254 is believed to be entering the Virgo environment for the first time and at high speed. The ALFALFA map clearly shows a long HI tail extending ~250 kpc northward from the galaxy. Embedded as one condensation within this HI structure is the object previously identified as a "dark galaxy": Virgo HI21 (Davies et al. 2004). A body of evidence including its location within and velocity with respect to the cluster and the appearance and kinematics of its strong spiral pattern, extra-disk HI and lengthy HI tail is consistent with a picture of "galaxy harassment" as proposed by Moore et al. (1996a,b; 1998). The smoothly varying radial velocity field along the tail as it emerges from NGC 4254 can be used as a timing tool, if interpreted as resulting from the coupling of the rotation of the disk and the collective gravitational forces associated with the harassment mechanism.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap.J.(Lett.). higher resolution figure available at http://egg.astro.cornell.edu/alfalfa/pubs/figs/n4254_f1.ep

    Density-density functionals and effective potentials in many-body electronic structure calculations

    We demonstrate the existence of different density-density functionals designed to retain selected properties of the many-body ground state in a non-interacting solution starting from the standard density functional theory ground state. We focus on diffusion quantum Monte Carlo applications that require trial wave functions with optimal Fermion nodes. The theory is extensible and can be used to understand current practices in several electronic structure methods within a generalized density functional framework. The theory justifies and stimulates the search of optimal empirical density functionals and effective potentials for accurate calculations of the properties of real materials, but also cautions on the limits of their applicability. The concepts are tested and validated with a near-analytic model.Comment: five figure

    A Fast and Efficient Algorithm for Slater Determinant Updates in Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations

    We present an efficient low-rank updating algorithm for updating the trial wavefunctions used in Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. The algorithm is based on low-rank updating of the Slater determinants. In particular, the computational complexity of the algorithm is O(kN) during the k-th step compared with traditional algorithms that require O(N^2) computations, where N is the system size. For single determinant trial wavefunctions the new algorithm is faster than the traditional O(N^2) Sherman-Morrison algorithm for up to O(N) updates. For multideterminant configuration-interaction type trial wavefunctions of M+1 determinants, the new algorithm is significantly more efficient, saving both O(MN^2) work and O(MN^2) storage. The algorithm enables more accurate and significantly more efficient QMC calculations using configuration interaction type wavefunctions

    Investigation of LANDSAT follow-on thematic mapper spatial, radiometric and spectral resolution

    The author has identified the following significant results. Fine resolution M7 multispectral scanner data collected during the Corn Blight Watch Experiment in 1971 served as the basis for this study. Different locations and times of year were studied. Definite improvement using 30-40 meter spatial resolution over present LANDSAT 1 resolution and over 50-60 meter resolution was observed, using crop area mensuration as the measure. Simulation studies carried out to extrapolate the empirical results to a range of field size distributions confirmed this effect, showing the improvement to be most pronounced for field sizes of 1-4 hectares. Radiometric sensitivity study showed significant degradation of crop classification accuracy immediately upon relaxation from the nominally specified values of 0.5% noise equivalent reflectance. This was especially the case for data which were spectrally similar such as that collected early in the growing season and also when attempting to accomplish crop stress detection
