    ASTRONOMICAL GLASS PLATE NEGATIVES: MONITORING OF EMULSION LAYER DETERIORATION

    One of the techniques for making photographic negatives most used in the history of photography were gelatin glass plates. This technique was used not only in the artistic field but also and mainly in the scientific field. The main period when glass plate negatives were used in astronomy was between 1890–1980. There are over 7 million of these negatives all over the word and they carry valuable historical scientific data. However, during the long-term storage of this material, deterioration of the emulsion (picture) layer and/or the support (glass) layer has occurred. In this paper we report on our preliminary results from an analysis of the yellowing of the emulsion layer and of gold micro-spots. Both phenomena worsen the readability of the information in the photograph, and it is necessary to prevent their formation, which is why we need to know as much as possible about their origin

    Involvement of Phospholipids in the Mechanism of Insulin Action in HEPG2 Cells

    Summary The mechanism of action by which insulin increases phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol (DAG) levels was investigated in cultured hepatoma cells (HEPG2). Insulin stimulated phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) degradation through the activation of specific phospholipases C (PLC). The DAG increase appears to be biphasic. The early DAG production seems to be due to PI breakdown, probably through phosphatidyl-inositol-3-kinase (PI3K) involvement, whereas the delayed DAG increase is derived directly from the PC-PLC activity. The absence of phospholipase D (PLD) involvement was confirmed by the lack of PC-derived phosphatidylethanol production. Experiments performed in the presence of R59022, an inhibitor of DAG-kinase, indicated that PA release is the result of the DAG-kinase activity on the DAG produced in the early phase of insulin action

    The tectonometamorphic evolution of the peri-Siberian tract of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is mainly characterized by Baikalian Late Proterozoic - Early Cambrian cycle related to amalgamation of Proterozoic oceanic and continent fragments to Siberain landmass. Here we present in-situ monazite geochronology linked to P−T modelling of micashischsts and migmatite gneisses at the northern part of the Precambrian Baydrag block (central Mongolia) previously considered as a part of Baikalian metamorphic belt. Garnet-sillimanite-kyanite gneiss records first burial to the sillimanite stability at ~725 °C and 6.5 kbar, followed by burial to the kyanite stability at ~650 °C and ~8 kbar. The garnet-staurolite schist records burial to the staurolite-stability at ~620 °C and 6 kbar, followed by a nearly isothermal burial to ~580 °C and 9 kbar. The monazite data yield a continuum of 207Pb-corrected 238U/206Pb dates of c. 926−768 Ma in the Grt−Sil−Ky gneiss, and c. 937−754 Ma in the Grt-St schist. Based on monazite textural positon and internal zoning, the time of prograde burial and peak under a thermal gradient of 28-32 °C/km is estimated at c. 870−890 Ma. It is not clear whether such high grade conditions prevailed until a phase of further burial under a geothermal gradient of 18-22 °C/km and dated at 800−820 Ma. Additionally, monazite with dates of c. 568−515 Ma occurs as whole grains or as rims with sharp boundaries on Grenvillean monazite in Grt-St schist testifying for minor Baikalian overprint. Metamorphic zircon rims with Th/U ratio ~0.01-0.06 in Grt−Sil−Ky gneiss with 877 ± 7 Ma age, together with lower intercepts of zircon discordia lines in both Grt-Sil-Ky gneiss and Grt-St schist further support the Tonian age of high grade metamorphism. The P−T and geochronology data show anticlockwise P−T evolution from c. 930 to 750 Ma which is interpreted as a result of thickening of suprasubduction extensional and hot edifice - probably of back arc or arc type. This kind of prograde metamorphism was so far described only on the northern part of the Tarim block and interpreted as a result of initiation of peri-Rodinian subduction of Mirovoi Ocean. Here, we further discuss geodynamic consequences of a unique discovery of Tonian metamorphism in term of tectonic switch related to initiation of peri-Rodinian oceanic subduction during supercontinent assembly followed by strong mechanical coupling potentially related to onset of Rodinia splitting

    The processes leading to the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent through Grenvillian collisional orogeny are relatively well known. In contrast, accretionary orogenic processes occurring at the supercontinent periphery following Rodinia assembly are poorly understood. To fill this gap, we have identified metamorphic rocks in the Mongolia collage of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, where numerous data testify for Meso- to Neo-proterozoic magmatic reworking. The tectono-metamorphic evolution of the peri-Siberian tract of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is mainly characterized by the late Proterozoic-early Cambrian (Baikalian) cycle. However, we document here a Tonian age metamorphism at the northern part of the Precambrian Baidrag block, previously considered as a typical example of the Baikalian metamorphic belt. This study incorporates zircon and in-situ monazite geochronology linked to P-T modelling of Grt-Sil-Ky migmatite gneiss and Grt-St micaschist. Grt-Sil-Ky gneiss records initial burial to the sillimanite stability field at ~720 °C and 6.0 kbar followed by further burial to the kyanite stability field at ~750 °C and ~9 kbar and decompression to ~650 °C and ~8 kbar. The Grt-St schist records initial burial to the staurolite stability field at ~620 °C and 6 kbar, followed by further burial to ~590 °C and 8.5 kbar. Based on monazite textural positon, internal zoning, and REE patterns, the time of prograde burial to 6.0 kbar under a thermal gradient of 27-32 °C/km is estimated at ca. 890−853 Ma. It is not clear whether such high-grade conditions prevailed until a phase of further burial under a geothermal gradient of 18-22 °C/km dated at ca. 835−815 Ma. The late monazite recrystallization at ca. 790 Ma is related to decompression. Additionally, monazite with dates of ca. 568−515 Ma occur as whole grains or as rims with sharp boundaries on Tonian monazite in Grt-St schist suggesting a minor Baikalian overprint. Metamorphic zircon rims with Th/U ratios of ~0.01-0.06 in Grt-Sil-Ky gneiss with 877±7 Ma age, together with lower intercepts of detrital zircon discordia lines in both Grt-Sil-Ky gneiss and Grt-St schist further support the Tonian age of high-grade metamorphism.     Universal mechanism of discontinuity of commensurate-incommensurate transitions in three-dimensional solids: Strain dependence of soliton self-energy

    We show that there exists a universal mechanism of long-range soliton attraction in three-dimensional solids and, therefore, of discontinuity of any commensurate-incommensurate (C-IC) phase transition. This mechanism is due to the strain dependence of the soliton self-energy and specific features of the solid-state elasticity. The role of this mechanism is studied in detail for a class of C-IC transitions where the IC modulation is one-dimensional, the anisotropy in the order parameter space is small, and the symmetry of the systems allows the existence of the Lifshitz invariant. Two other mechanisms of soliton attraction are operative here but the universal mechanism considered in this paper is found to be the most important one in some cases. Comparison with the most extensively studied C-IC transition in K2SeO4\rm K_2SeO_4 shows that the experimentally observed thermal anomalies can be understood as a result of the smearing of the theoretically predicted discontinuous transition.Comment: 8 pages (extended version, title changed

    Changes of Vital Parameters after Administration of Butorphanol during Tiletamine-Zolazepam-Ketamine-Xylazine Anaesthesia for Joint Surgery in Miniature Pigs

    The study compares the effects of butorphanol in pigs undergoing joint surgery in tiletamine-zolazepam-ketamine-xylazine (TKX) anaesthesia. A total of 12 pigs were divided into 2 groups by 6 animals - BUT (anaesthetized with TKX combination and butorphanol) and CON (control group - anaesthetized with TKX combination only). All pigs were sedated with a mix of tiletamin-zolazepam-ketamin-xylazin, put into total anaesthesia using propofol, and connected to an anaesthesiology unit (O2-Air). For 40 min we logged the heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), haemoglobin saturation by oxygen (SpO2) and end-tidal CO2 concentration (ETCO2) values. Ten minutes after connecting to the devices, the pigs in the BUT group were intravenously administered butorphanol (0.2 mg/kg) in the total volume of 2 ml, or physiological saline in the same volume. The pigs in the BUT group had a lower (p th, 10th and 25th min, and a lower RR in the 10th, 15th and 20th min. MAP, ETCO2 and SpO2 values did not differ substantially. Butorphanol can thus be identified as a suitable analgesic TKX supplement to anaesthesia of miniature pigs with minimum effect on vital functions

    Discrimination of conventional and organic white cabbage from a long-term field trial study using untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics

    The influence of organic and conventional farming practices on the content of single nutrients in plants is disputed in the scientific literature. Here, large-scale untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics was used to compare the composition of white cabbage from organic and conventional agriculture, measuring 1,600 compounds. Cabbage was sampled in 2 years from one conventional and two organic farming systems in a rigidly controlled long-term field trial in Denmark. Using Orthogonal Projection to Latent Structures-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), we found that the production system leaves a significant (p = 0.013) imprint in the white cabbage metabolome that is retained between production years. We externally validated this finding by predicting the production system of samples from one year using a classification model built on samples from the other year, with a correct classification in 83% of cases. Thus, it was concluded that the investigated conventional and organic management practices have a systematic impact on the metabolome of white cabbage. This emphasizes the potential of untargeted metabolomics for authenticity testing of organic plant products
