The Fine-Structure of the Net-Circular Polarization in a Sunspot Penumbra
We present novel evidence for a fine structure observed in the net-circular
polarization (NCP) of a sunspot penumbra based on spectropolarimetric
measurements utilizing the Zeeman sensitive FeI 630.2 nm line. For the first
time we detect a filamentary organized fine structure of the NCP on spatial
scales that are similar to the inhomogeneities found in the penumbral flow
field. We also observe an additional property of the visible NCP, a
zero-crossing of the NCP in the outer parts of the center-side penumbra, which
has not been recognized before. In order to interprete the observations we
solve the radiative transfer equations for polarized light in a model penumbra
with embedded magnetic flux tubes. We demonstrate that the observed
zero-crossing of the NCP can be explained by an increased magnetic field
strength inside magnetic flux tubes in the outer penumbra combined with a
decreased magnetic field strength in the background field. Our results strongly
support the concept of the uncombed penumbra
Spatial Relationship between Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections
We report on the spatial relationship between solar flares and coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) observed during 1996-2005 inclusive. We identified 496
flare-CME pairs considering limb flares (distance from central meridian > 45
deg) with soft X-ray flare size > C3 level. The CMEs were detected by the Large
Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on board the Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory (SOHO). We investigated the flare positions with respect to the CME
span for the events with X-class, M-class, and C-class flares separately. It is
found that the most frequent flare site is at the center of the CME span for
all the three classes, but that frequency is different for the different
classes. Many X-class flares often lie at the center of the associated CME,
while C-class flares widely spread to the outside of the CME span. The former
is different from previous studies, which concluded that no preferred flare
site exists. We compared our result with the previous studies and conclude that
the long-term LASCO observation enabled us to obtain the detailed spatial
relation between flares and CMEs. Our finding calls for a closer flare-CME
relationship and supports eruption models typified by the CSHKP magnetic

Self-Consistent MHD Modeling of a Coronal Mass Ejection, Coronal Dimming, and a Giant Cusp-Shaped Arcade Formation
We performed magnetohydrodynamic simulation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
and associated giant arcade formations, and the results suggested new
interpretations of observations of CMEs. We performed two cases of the
simulation: with and without heat conduction. Comparing between the results of
the two cases, we found that reconnection rate in the conductive case is a
little higher than that in the adiabatic case and the temperature of the loop
top is consistent with the theoretical value predicted by the Yokoyama-Shibata
scaling law. The dynamical properties such as velocity and magnetic fields are
similar in the two cases, whereas thermal properties such as temperature and
density are very different.In both cases, slow shocks associated with magnetic
reconnectionpropagate from the reconnection region along the magnetic field
lines around the flux rope, and the shock fronts form spiral patterns. Just
outside the slow shocks, the plasma density decreased a great deal. The soft
X-ray images synthesized from the numerical results are compared with the soft
X-ray images of a giant arcade observed with the Soft X-ray Telescope aboard
{\it Yohkoh}, it is confirmed that the effect of heat conduction is significant
for the detailed comparison between simulation and observation. The comparison
between synthesized and observed soft X-ray images provides new interpretations

Can Streamer Blobs prevent the Buildup of the Interplanetetary Magnetic Field?
Coronal Mass Ejections continuously drag closed magnetic field lines away
from the Sun, adding new flux to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). We
propose that the outward-moving blobs that have been observed in helmet
streamers are evidence of ongoing, small-scale reconnection in streamer current
sheets, which may play an important role in the prevention of an indefinite
buildup of the IMF. Reconnection between two open field lines from both sides
of a streamer current sheet creates a new closed field line, which becomes part
of the helmet, and a disconnected field line, which moves outward. The blobs
are formed by plasma from the streamer that is swept up in the trough of the
outward moving field line. We show that this mechanism is supported by
observations from SOHO/LASCO. Additionally, we propose a thorough statistical
study to quantify the contribution of blob formation to the reduction of the
IMF, and indicate how this mechanism may be verified by observations with

Fluxtube model atmospheres and Stokes V zero-crossing wavelengths
First results of the inversion of Stokes I and V profiles from plage regions
near disk center are presented. Both low and high spatial resolution spectra of
FeI 6301.5 and FeI 6302.5 A obtained with the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter (ASP)
have been considered for analysis. The thin flux tube approximation,
implemented in an LTE inversion code based on response functions, is used to
describe unresolved magnetic elements. The code allows the simultaneous and
consistent inference of all atmospheric quantities determining the radiative
transfer with the sole assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. By considering
velocity gradients within the tubes we are able to match the full ASP Stokes
profiles. The magnetic atmospheres derived from the inversion are characterized
by the absence of significant motions in high layers and strong velocity
gradients in deeper layers. These are essential to reproduce the asymmetries of
the observed profiles. Our scenario predicts a shift of the Stokes V
zero-crossing wavelengths which is indeed present in observations made with the

High-intensity-focused ultrasound in the treatment of primary prostate cancer: the first UK series
BACKGROUND: The use of minimally invasive ablative therapies in localised prostate cancer offer potential for a middle ground between active surveillance and radical therapy. METHODS: An analysis of men with organ-confined prostate cancer treated with transrectal whole-gland HIFU (Sonablate 500) between 1 February 2005 and 15 May 2007 was carried out in two centres. Outcome data (side-effects using validated patient questionnaires, biochemical, histology) were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 172 men were treated under general anaesthetic as day-case procedures with 78% discharged a mean 5 h after treatment. Mean follow-up was 346 days (range 135-759 days). Urethral stricture was significantly lower in those with suprapubic catheter compared with urethral catheters (19.4 vs 40.4%, P = 0.005). Antibiotics were given to 23.8% of patients for presumed urinary tract infection and the rate of epididymitis was 7.6%. Potency was maintained in 70% by 12 months, whereas mild stress urinary incontinence (no pads) was reported in 7.0% (12 out of 172) with a further 0.6% (1 out of 172) requiring pads. There was no rectal toxicity and no recto-urethral fistulae. In all, 78.3% achieved a PSA nadir <= 0.5 mu g ml(-1) at 12 months, with 57.8% achieving <= 0.2 mu g ml(-1). Then, 8 out of 13 were retreated with HIFU, one had salvage external beam radiotherapy and four chose active surveillance for small-volume low-risk disease. Overall, there was no evidence of disease (PSA <0.5 mu g ml(-1) or negative biopsy if nadir not achieved) after one HIFU session in 92.4% ( 159 out of 172) of patients. CONCLUSION: HIFU is a minimally invasive, day-case ablative technique that can achieve good biochemical outcomes in the short term with minimal urinary incontinence and acceptable levels of erectile dysfunction. Long-term outcome needs further evaluation and the inception of an international registry for cases treated using HIFU will significantly aid this health technology assessment. How Many CMEs Have Flux Ropes? Deciphering the Signatures of Shocks, Flux Ropes, and Prominences in Coronagraph Observations of CMEs
We intend to provide a comprehensive answer to the question on whether all
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have flux rope structure. To achieve this, we
present a synthesis of the LASCO CME observations over the last sixteen years,
assisted by 3D MHD simulations of the breakout model, EUV and coronagraphic
observations from STEREO and SDO, and statistics from a revised LASCO CME
database. We argue that the bright loop often seen as the CME leading edge is
the result of pileup at the boundary of the erupting flux rope irrespective of
whether a cavity or, more generally, a 3-part CME can be identified. Based on
our previous work on white light shock detection and supported by the MHD
simulations, we identify a new type of morphology, the `two-front' morphology.
It consists of a faint front followed by diffuse emission and the bright
loop-like CME leading edge. We show that the faint front is caused by density
compression at a wave (or possibly shock) front driven by the CME. We also
present high-detailed multi-wavelength EUV observations that clarify the
relative positioning of the prominence at the bottom of a coronal cavity with
clear flux rope structure. Finally, we visually check the full LASCO CME
database for flux rope structures. In the process, we classify the events into
two clear flux rope classes (`3-part', `Loop'), jets and outflows (no clear
structure). We find that at least 40% of the observed CMEs have clear flux rope
structures. We propose a new definition for flux rope CMEs (FR-CMEs) as a
coherent magnetic, twist-carrying coronal structure with angular width of at
least 40 deg and able to reach beyond 10 Rsun which erupts on a time scale of a
few minutes to several hours. We conclude that flux ropes are a common
occurrence in CMEs and pose a challenge for future studies to identify CMEs

Initiating undergraduate medical students into communities of research practise: what do supervisors recommend?
Abstract Background Much has been written in the educational literature on the value of communities of practise in enhancing student learning. Here, we take the experience of senior undergraduate medical students involved in short-term research as a member of a team as a paradigm for learning in a community of practise. Based on feedback from experienced supervisors, we offer recommendations for initiating students into the research culture of their team. In so doing, we endeavour to create a bridge between theory and practise through disseminating advice on good supervisory practise, where the supervisor is perceived as an educator responsible for designing the research process to optimize student learning. Methods Using the questionnaire design tool SurveyMonkey and comprehensive lists of contact details of staff who had supervised research projects at the University of Edinburgh during 1995 - 2008, current and previous supervisors were invited to recommend procedures which they had found successful in initiating students into the research culture of a team. Text responses were then coded in the form of derivative recommendations and categorized under general themes and sub-themes. Results Using the chi-square tests of linear trend and association, evidence was found for a positive trend towards more experienced supervisors offering responses (χ2 = 16.833, p 2 = 0.482, p = 0.487, n = 203), respectively. A total of 126 codes were extracted from the text responses of 65 respondents. These codes were simplified to form a complete list of 52 recommendations, which were in turn categorized under seven derivative overarching themes, the most highly represented themes being Connecting the student with others and Cultivating self-efficacy in research competence. Conclusions Through the design of a coding frame for supervisor responses, a wealth of ideas has been captured to make communities of research practise effective mediums for undergraduate student learning. The majority of these recommendations are underpinned by educational theory and have the potential to take the learner beyond the stage of initiation to that of integration within their community of research practise.</p
The safety and feasibility of extracorporeal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for the treatment of liver and kidney tumours in a Western population
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) provides a potential noninvasive alternative to conventional therapies. We report our preliminary experience from clinical trials designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of a novel, extracorporeal HIFU device for the treatment of liver and kidney tumours in a Western population. The extracorporeal, ultrasound-guided Model-JC Tumor Therapy System (HAIFU™ Technology Company, China) has been used to treat 30 patients according to four trial protocols. Patients with hepatic or renal tumours underwent a single therapeutic HIFU session under general anaesthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging 12 days after treatment provided assessment of response. The patients were subdivided into those followed up with further imaging alone or those undergoing surgical resection of their tumours, which enabled both radiological and histological assessment. HIFU exposure resulted in discrete zones of ablation in 25 of 27 evaluable patients (93%). Ablation of liver tumours was achieved more consistently than for kidney tumours (100 vs 67%, assessed radiologically). The adverse event profile was favourable when compared to more invasive techniques. HIFU treatment of liver and kidney tumours in a Western population is both safe and feasible.
