    Richness and Abundance of Carabidae and Staphylinidae (Coleoptera), in Northeastern Dairy Pastures Under Intensive Grazing

    Dairy cattle has become popular to dairy farmers in the Northeast looking for management schemes to cut production costs. Carabidae (ground beetles) and Staphylinidae (rove beetles) are indicators of habitat disturbances, such as drainage of wetlands, or grassland for grazing animals, and their monitoring could provide one measure of ecosystem sustainability if intensive management systems expand or intensify in the future. Our objective was assess the abundance and species richness of these two beetle families under intensive grazing throughout Pennsylvania, southern New York and Vermont. We collected 4365 ground beetles (83 species) and 4,027 rove beetles (79 species) by pitfall traps in three years in Pennsylvania. Nine ground beetle species, Amara aenea, Poecilus chalcites, Pterostichus melanarius, Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositum, Amara familiaris, Poecilus lucublandus, Agonum muelleri, Bembidion obtusum and Bembidion mimus represented 80% of the Carabidae collected. Five other species were new to Pennsylvania. Four rove beetle species, Philonthus cognatus, Meronera venustula, Amischa analis, and Philonthus various = (carbonarius), comprised 74% of the total Staphylinidae collected. Yearly distributions of the dominant species did not change significantly in the three years with A. aenea and P. cognatus being most abundant every year. A parasitic rove beetle, Aleochara tristis, was recovered for the first time in Pennsylvania and Vermont since its release in the 1960\u27s to control face fly, Musca autumnalis. Similar results were found in New York and Vermont. We collected 1,984 ground beetles (68 species). Pterostichus melanarius was most abundant. Pterostichus vernalis was detected for the first time in the United States (Vermont). It was previously reported from Montreal, Canada. We collected 843 rove beetles (45 species). Philonthus cognatus was the most abundant rove beetle. In addition, Tachinus corticinus, previously known only from Canada, was discovered for the first time in the United States in Vermont. Pastures in Pennsylvania were diverse, containing 14 species of forage plants and 17 weed species. Botanical composition was similar in New York and Vermont. Sixteen species of grasses and legumes made up 90% of the plant composition and 36 species of weeds made up the remainder. This di­verse plant ecosystem may explain the richness of ground and rove beetles in northeastern U.S. pastures because the heterogeneity in the plant population provided additional resources which can support a rich assemblage of beetles.     Changes in Imja Tsho in the Mount Everest Region of Nepal

    Imja Tsho, located in the Sagarmatha ( Everest) National Park of Nepal, is one of the most studied and rapidly growing lakes in the Himalayan range. Compared with previous studies, the results of our sonar bathymetric survey conducted in September of 2012 suggest that its maximum depth has increased from 90.5 to 116.3 +/- 5.2 m since 2002, and that its estimated volume has grown from 35.8 +/- 0.7 to 61.7 +/- 3.7 million m(3). Most of the expansion of the lake in recent years has taken place in the glacier terminus-lake interface on the eastern end of the lake, with the glacier receding at about 52 m yr(-1) and the lake expanding in area by 0.04 km(2) yr(-1). A ground penetrating radar survey of the Imja-Lhotse Shar glacier just behind the glacier terminus shows that the ice is over 200 m thick in the center of the glacier. The volume of water that could be released from the lake in the event of a breach in the damming moraine on the western end of the lake has increased to 34.1 +/- 1.08 million m(3) from the 21 million m(3) estimated in 2002.USAID Climate Change Resilient Development (CCRD) projectFulbright FoundationNational Geographic SocietyCenter for Research in Water Resource

There was not a clear difference in performance between the single-feeding toxicants and the multiple-feeding anticoagulants in this experiment. A 0.075% cholecalciferol bait gave control comparable to some registered materials and shows promise for future development. A bait containing 0.0216% diphacinone gave significantly better control than one containing 0.005% diphacinone

    Who Contributes to the Knowledge Sharing Economy?

    Information sharing dynamics of social networks rely on a small set of influencers to effectively reach a large audience. Our recent results and observations demonstrate that the shape and identity of this elite, especially those contributing \emph{original} content, is difficult to predict. Information acquisition is often cited as an example of a public good. However, this emerging and powerful theory has yet to provably offer qualitative insights on how specialization of users into active and passive participants occurs. This paper bridges, for the first time, the theory of public goods and the analysis of diffusion in social media. We introduce a non-linear model of \emph{perishable} public goods, leveraging new observations about sharing of media sources. The primary contribution of this work is to show that \emph{shelf time}, which characterizes the rate at which content get renewed, is a critical factor in audience participation. Our model proves a fundamental \emph{dichotomy} in information diffusion: While short-lived content has simple and predictable diffusion, long-lived content has complex specialization. This occurs even when all information seekers are \emph{ex ante} identical and could be a contributing factor to the difficulty of predicting social network participation and evolution.Comment: 15 pages in ACM Conference on Online Social Networks 201

    Development of boron calibration via hybrid comparator method in prompt gamma activation analysis

    The prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) facility at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin was utilized to quantify boron concentrations in boron carbide semiconductor films deposited on silicon substrates. Calibration was complicated by the unique and varying sample geometries analyzed. In addition, there was a dearth of solid materials available with quantified boron concentrations having comparable or readily modifiable dimensions to exploit for calibration purposes. Therefore, a novel hybrid comparator method was developed for the quantification of boron utilizing aluminum as an inexpensive and easily machinable reference material. Aluminum samples were manufactured with high tolerances to match the geometry of each sample of interest. Each boron carbide film sample and its congruent aluminum sample were measured in the PGAA system. The measured aluminum responses and relevant nuclear parameters were used to standardize the measurements. A boron standard was created using a procedure derived from a similar approach used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Quality control measurements using this standard show that the method provided accuracy to within 5% for boron quantification

    Noether symmetries, energy-momentum tensors and conformal invariance in classical field theory

    In the framework of classical field theory, we first review the Noether theory of symmetries, with simple rederivations of its essential results, with special emphasis given to the Noether identities for gauge theories. Will this baggage on board, we next discuss in detail, for Poincar\'e invariant theories in flat spacetime, the differences between the Belinfante energy-momentum tensor and a family of Hilbert energy-momentum tensors. All these tensors coincide on shell but they split their duties in the following sense: Belinfante's tensor is the one to use in order to obtain the generators of Poincar\'e symmetries and it is a basic ingredient of the generators of other eventual spacetime symmetries which may happen to exist. Instead, Hilbert tensors are the means to test whether a theory contains other spacetime symmetries beyond Poincar\'e. We discuss at length the case of scale and conformal symmetry, of which we give some examples. We show, for Poincar\'e invariant Lagrangians, that the realization of scale invariance selects a unique Hilbert tensor which allows for an easy test as to whether conformal invariance is also realized.     Promoting deep learning through design - discussion, student activity and assessment

    There is widespread evidence that Australia is currently facing falling student participation rates in science and mathematics subjects at secondary school and university undergraduate levels. The future implications of this science-deficit are widely acknowledged. Unfortunately, science teaching itself is also widely seen as being dull, too content-heavy, delivered to mass-audiences and assessed in ways promoting surface approaches to learning. To address these issues, and issues relating to the apparent lack of challenge for very able students in their first year at university, The University of Queensland developed the Advanced Study Program in Science (ASPinS). This initiative offers an enhanced learning experience to a select group of high-achieving students in addition to their existing undergraduate study in a Science-related degree program. ASPinS offers these students the opportunity to interact with leading research scientists, broaden their understanding of important scientific issues, experience new interactive learning opportunities, undertake research projects and obtain an authentic insight into science as a career. This presentation, however, will only focus on the unique first year course offered within the 3 year ASPinS experience – BIOL1017 “Perspectives in Science”. In this course students are encouraged to think about important current scientific issues from different perspectives – both scientific and non-scientific. Panels of expert scientists use their knowledge and experience to present real scientific issues for students to examine and discuss. These panel discussions cover a spectrum of medical, environmental and social issues, covering different viewpoints and possible solutions. Combining this effective panel model with an array of student-led activities provides an ideal environment for learning. Students are made to apply their new knowledge, discuss issues and construct thoughts, opinions and products – depending on the specifically designed activities. Relevant assessment tasks include group-writing activities and oral presentations which enable students to demonstrate their learning through authentic contexts that are carefully designed to influence the way students learn. Authentic assessment tasks enable students to see a purpose for the product (assessment) they are producing while at the same time enabling them to synthesise the various scientific ‘facts’ and issues they have been discussing. This level of assessment activity, by its nature, encourages higher-order learning. Student evaluations have consistently confirmed that the key to the success of each Module within the course lies in the breadth of speakers selected to represent the different angles associated with the topic under discussion and the related activities and assessment tasks. The findings indicate that students value the opportunity to explore the multi-disciplinary nature of science-related issues and to actually discuss the issues. The “Perspectives in Science” course is a model for the success of combining teaching and learning theory and scholarship, to a particular set of objectives, to create a highly effective learning environment and a meaningful student experience

    Regulation of cell cycle progression occurs in part through the targeted degradation of both activating and inhibitory subunits of the cyclin-dependent kinases. During G1, CDC4, encoding a WD-40 repeat protein, and CDC34, encoding a ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme, are involved in the destruction of these regulators. Here we describe evidence indicating that CDC53 also is involved in this process. Mutations in CDC53 cause a phenotype indistinguishable from those of cdc4 and cdc34 mutations, numerous genetic interactions are seen between these genes, and the encoded proteins are found physically associated in vivo. Cdc53p defines a large family of proteins found in yeasts, nematodes, and humans whose molecular functions are uncharacterized. These results suggest a role for this family of proteins in regulating cell cycle proliferation through protein degradation
