    A new mini-navigation tool allows accurate component placement during anterior total hip arthroplasty.

    Introduction: Computer-assisted navigation systems have been explored in total hip arthroplasty (THA) to improve component positioning. While these systems traditionally rely on anterior pelvic plane registration, variances in soft tissue thickness overlying anatomical landmarks can lead to registration error, and the supine coronal plane has instead been proposed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a novel navigation tool, using registration of the anterior pelvic plane or supine coronal plane during simulated anterior THA. Methods: Measurements regarding the acetabular component position, and changes in leg length and offset were recorded. Benchtop phantoms and target measurement values commonly seen in surgery were used for analysis. Measurements for anteversion and inclination, and changes in leg length and offset were recorded by the navigation tool and compared with the known target value of the simulation. Pearson\u27s Results: The device accurately measured cup position and leg length measurements to within 1° and 1 mm of the known target values, respectively. Across all simulations, there was a strong, positive relationship between values obtained by the device and the known target values ( Conclusion: The preliminary findings of this study suggest that the novel navigation tool tested is a potentially viable tool to improve the accuracy of component placement during THA using the anterior approach

    The primary aim of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Test is to provide unbiased data regarding the agronomic performance of cotton varieties in the major cotton growing areas in Arkansas. This information helps seed dealers establish marketing strategies and assists producers in choosing varieties to plant. In this way the annual test facilitates the inclusion of new, improved genetic material into Arkansas cotton production. The 1999 test had 67 entries (including 25 transgenic genotypes and 35 first-year entries), which were evaluated at sixsites in eastern Arkansas. The presence of four transgenic and five first-year entries among the top 10 yielding entries suggests that improvement is being accomplished in varietal development. This report also includes the Mississippi County Variety Test (an on-farm evaluation of selected varieties) and on-farm variety trials conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service

    A Comparison of Semi-Analytic and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Galaxy Formation

    We compare the statistical properties of galaxies found in two different models of hierarchical galaxy formation: the semi-analytic model of Cole et al. and the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of Pearce et al. Using a `stripped-down' version of the semi-analytic model which mimics the resolution of the SPH simulations and excludes physical processes not included in them, we find that the two models produce an ensemble of galaxies with remarkably similar properties, although there are some differences in the gas cooling rates and in the number of galaxies that populate halos of different mass. The full semi-analytic model, which has effectively no resolution limit and includes a treatment of star formation and supernovae feedback, produces somewhat different (but readily understandable) results. Agreement is particularly good for the present-day global fractions of hot gas, cold dense (i.e. galactic) gas and uncollapsed gas, for which the SPH and stripped-down semi-analytic calculations differ by at most 25%. In the most massive halos, the stripped-down semi-analytic model predicts, on the whole, up to 50% less gas in galaxies than is seen in the SPH simulations. The two techniques apportion this cold gas somewhat differently amongst galaxies in a given halo. This difference can be tracked down to the greater cooling rate in massive halos in the SPH simulation compared to the semi-analytic model.     Three dimensional viscous analysis of a hypersonic inlet

    The flow fields in supersonic/hypersonic inlets are currently being studied at NASA Lewis Research Center using 2- and 3-D full Navier-Stokes and Parabolized Navier-Stokes solvers. These tools have been used to analyze the flow through the McDonnell Douglas Option 2 inlet which has been tested at Calspan in support of the National Aerospace Plane Program. Comparisons between the computational and experimental results are presented. These comparisons lead to better overall understanding of the complex flows present in this class of inlets. The aspects of the flow field emphasized in this work are the 3-D effects, the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and the strong nonuniformities generated within the inlet
