A Scanning laser-velocimeter technique for measuring two-dimensional wake-vortex velocity distributions
A rapid scanning two dimensional laser velocimeter (LV) has been used to measure simultaneously the vortex vertical and axial velocity distributions in the Langley Vortex Research Facility. This system utilized a two dimensional Bragg cell for removing flow direction ambiguity by translating the optical frequency for each velocity component, which was separated by band-pass filters. A rotational scan mechanism provided an incremental rapid scan to compensate for the large displacement of the vortex with time. The data were processed with a digital counter and an on-line minicomputer. Vaporized kerosene (0.5 micron to 5 micron particle sizes) was used for flow visualization and LV scattering centers. The overall measured mean-velocity uncertainity is less than 2 percent. These measurements were obtained from ensemble averaging of individual realizations
Pyrotechnic shock at the orbiter/external tank forward attachment
During the initial certification test of the forward structural attachment of the space shuttle orbiter to the external tank, pyrotechnic shock from actuation of the separation device resulted in structural failure of the thermal protection tiles surrounding the attachment. Because of the high shock associated with the separation bolt, the development of alternative low shock separation designs was initiated. Intrinsic carrier mobility of multi-layered MoS field-effect transistors on SiO
By fabricating and characterizing multi-layered MoS-based field-effect
transistors (FETs) in a four terminal configuration, we demonstrate that the
two terminal-configurations tend to underestimate the carrier mobility
due to the Schottky barriers at the contacts. For a back-gated two-terminal
configuration we observe mobilities as high as 125 cmVs which
is considerably smaller than 306.5 cmVs as extracted from the
same device when using a four-terminal configuration. This indicates that the
intrinsic mobility of MoS on SiO is significantly larger than the
values previously reported, and provides a quantitative method to evaluate the

Motivated by isotropic fully developed turbulence, we define a theory of
symmetric matrix valued isotropic Gaussian multiplicative chaos. Our
construction extends the scalar theory developed by J.P. Kahane in 1985
The five-minute oscillations: What's left to be done
Current observational methods for studying these oscillations at large horizontal wavenumbers are discussed in detail and several two dimensional power spectra obtained with a CID camera on the main spectrograph of the McMath telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory are described. The best-resolved observations of the p-mode obtained at chromospheric elevations are also presented. Recent progress in studies of the p-modes at low wavenumbers with full-disk velocity detection schemes is summarized. These full-disk observations of radial and low-degree non-radial modes were shown to place severe constraints on the theoretical calculation of solar interior structure. Progress in making fully-consistent solar models which fit both the high- and low-wave number observations is described. Finally, the observational and theoretical improvements that are necessary for further progress in solar seismology are summarized
