Thermodynamics and kinetics of the Mg65Cu25Y10 bulk metallic glass forming liquid
The thermodynamics and kinetics of the bulk metallic glass forming Mg65Cu25Y10 liquid were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and three-point beam bending. The experiments lead to the determination of the thermodynamic functions as well as the viscosity of the supercooled liquid. The viscosity shows a temperature dependence, which is consistent with that of a strong glass similar to Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni–Be bulk metallic glasses or sodium silicate glasses. This contrasts with more fragile conventional metallic glass formers or pure metals. The relatively weak temperature dependence of the thermodynamic functions of the supercooled liquid is related to these sluggish kinetics in the supercooled liquid. Entropy, viscosity, and kinetic glass transition are compared in the frameworks of the fragility concept and the Adam–Gibbs theory. Strong liquid behavior retards the formation of crystals kinetically and thermodynamically
Reduced O diffusion through Be doped Pt electrodes
Using first principles electronic structure calculations we screen nine
elements for their potential to retard oxygen diffusion through
poly-crystalline Pt (p-Pt) films. We determine that O diffuses preferentially
as interstitial along Pt grain boundaries (GBs). The calculated barriers are
compatible with experimental estimates. We find that Be controls O diffusion
through p-Pt. Beryllium segregates to Pt GBs at interstitial (i) and
substitutional (s) sites. i-Be is slightly less mobile than O and it repels O,
thus stuffing the GB. s-Be has a high diffusion barrier and it forms strong
bonds to O, trapping O in the GB. Experiments confirm our theoretical
predictions.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
Spin Hall Effect in Atoms
We propose an optical means to realize a spin hall effect (SHE) in neutral
atomic system by coupling the internal spin states of atoms to radiation. The
interaction between the external optical fields and the atoms creates effective
magnetic fields that act in opposite directions on "electrically" neutral atoms
with opposite spin polarizations. This effect leads to a Landau level structure
for each spin orientation in direct analogy with the familiar SHE in
semiconductors. The conservation and topological properties of the spin
current, and the creation of a pure spin current are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure; Final versio
Algorithm Diversity for Resilient Systems
Diversity can significantly increase the resilience of systems, by reducing
the prevalence of shared vulnerabilities and making vulnerabilities harder to
exploit. Work on software diversity for security typically creates variants of
a program using low-level code transformations. This paper is the first to
study algorithm diversity for resilience. We first describe how a method based
on high-level invariants and systematic incrementalization can be used to
create algorithm variants. Executing multiple variants in parallel and
comparing their outputs provides greater resilience than executing one variant.
To prevent different parallel schedules from causing variants' behaviors to
diverge, we present a synchronized execution algorithm for DistAlgo, an
extension of Python for high-level, precise, executable specifications of
distributed algorithms. We propose static and dynamic metrics for measuring
diversity. An experimental evaluation of algorithm diversity combined with
implementation-level diversity for several sequential algorithms and
distributed algorithms shows the benefits of algorithm diversity
XPS and AFM study of interaction of organosilane and sizing with e-glass fibre surface
Organosilanes are often used in commercial sizings for glass fibres to provide wettability with the resin and promote strong interfacial adhesion to the matrix in a fibre reinforced polymer composite. The silane treatment is introduced as part of a complex deposition from an aqueous emulsion immediately at the spinaret and determines the optimum properties of the cured composite. To understand the interaction of organosilanes contained in sizings for glass surfaces, XPS was used to investigate the adsorption of γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) from a simple sizing system containing a polyurethane (PU) film former. It has been found that both APS and the sizing (containing APS and PU) deposits on E-glass fibre surfaces contained components of differing hydrolytic stability. The differences observed in the AFM images of APS coated E-glass fibres before and after water extraction also confirmed that the APS deposit contained components with different water solubility
Thermal loading in the laser holography nondestructive testing of a composite structure
A laser holographic interferometry method that has variable sensitivity to surface deformation was applied to the investigation of composite test samples under thermal loading. A successful attempt was made to detect debonds in a fiberglass-epoxy-ceramic plate. Experimental results are presented along with the mathematical analysis of the physical model of the thermal loading and current conduction in the composite material
Morphology, structure, optical, and electrical properties of AgSbO₃
The morphology of defect pyrochlore-type, AgSbO₃ microparticle/nanoparticles obtained via solid state reaction evolve from irregular to Fullerene-like polyhedra before finally decomposing into metal-organic framework-5 like particles with increase in sintering temperature. The defect pyrochlore-type AgSbO₃ particles are slightly Ag deficient while the valence of the antimony ion is shown to be +5 giving rise to a probable stoichiometry of Ag₁ˍₓ SbVO₃ˍₓ/₂, with x∼0.01–0.04. A highly structured diffuse intensity distribution observed via electron diffraction is interpreted in terms of correlated displacements of one-dimensional (1D) silver ion chains along ⟨110⟩ directions. A redshifting in the absorption edges in UV-visible absorption spectra is observed for samples prepared at sintering temperatures higher than 1000 °C and attributed to the surface plasma resonance effect associated with small amounts of excess metallic Ag on the Ag₁ˍₓ SbVO₃ˍₓ/₂ particles. An electrical properties investigation of the silver antimonate samples via dielectric, conductivity, and electric modulus spectroscopy shows a prominent dielectric relaxation associated with grain boundaries. The silver ion conductivity is associated with correlated displacements of 1D silver ion chains along ⟨110⟩ directions.Z.G.Y., Y.L., and R.L.W. acknowledge financial support

Holographic nondestructive tests performed on composite samples of ceramic-epoxy-fiberglass sandwich structure
When a hologram storing more than one wave is illuminated with coherent light, the reconstructed wave fronts interfere with each other or with any other phase-related wave front derived from the illuminating source. This multiple wave front comparison is called holographic interferometry, and its application is called holographic nondestructive testing (HNDT). The theoretical aspects of HNDT techniques and the sensitivity of the holographic system to the geometrical placement of the optical components are briefly discussed. A unique HNDT system which is mobile and possesses variable sensitivity to stress amplitude is discribed, the experimental evidence of the application of this system to the testing of the hidden debonds in a ceramic-epoxy-fiberglass structure used for sample testing of the radome of the Pershing missile system is presented
