    Identifying Appliances using NIALM with Minimum Features

    Government of India has decided to install smart meters in fourteen states. Smart meters are required to identify home appliances to fulfill various tasks in the smart grid environment. Both intrusive and non-intrusive methods have been suggested for identification. However, intrusive method is not suitable for cost and privacy reasons. On the other hand, techniques using non-intrusive appliance load monitoring (NIALM) are yet to result in meaningful practical implementation. Two major challenges in NIALM research are the choice of features (load signatures of appliances), and the appropriate algorithm. Both have a direct impact on the cost of the smart meter. In this paper, we address the two issues and propose a procedure with only four features and a simple algorithm to identify appliances. Our experimental setup, on the recommended specifications of the internal electrical wiring in Indian residences, used common household appliancesā€™ load signatures of active and reactive powers, harmonic components and their magnitudes. We show that these four features are essential and sufficient for implementation of NIALM with a simple algorithm. We have introduced a new approach of ā€˜multi point sensingā€™ and ā€˜group controlā€™ rather than the ā€˜single point sensingā€™ and ā€˜individual controlā€™, used so far in NIALM techniques.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i6.671

    PSO Based reduced order modelling of autonomous AC microgrid considering state perturbation

    Reduced order modelling of complex autonomous microgrid system is crucial to its small signal modelling and stability concerns. To reduce the storage requirements and computational time, the order of such microgrids can be reduced by Model Order Reduction (MOR) techniques. This paper presents an optimal reduction technique, which retains dominant poles of the original system and achieves subsequent error minimization through the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO). The 36th order complex microgrid system is reduced to 9th order approximant, which retains the significant dynamics of the original system. The simulation results reflect the superiority of the proposed method as compared to the balanced truncation method in terms of the time and frequency domain analysis of the reduced order equivalents. State perturbation in the state space model has also been considered in full as well as reduced order system dynamics and eigenvalue analysis for system stability

    A micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate with high relative bioavailability in man

    Ferric pyrophosphate is a water-insoluble Fe compound used to fortify infant cereals and chocolate-drink powders as it causes no organoleptic changes to the food vehicle. However, it is only of low absorption in man. Recently, an innovative ferric pyrophosphate has been developed (Sunactive Feā„¢) based on small-particle-size ferric pyrophosphate (average size 0Ā·3 Ī¼m) mixed with emulsifiers, so that it remains in suspension in liquid products. The aim of the present studies was to compare Fe absorption of micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate (Sunactive Feā„¢) with that of ferrous sulfate in an infant cereal and a yoghurt drink. Two separate Fe absorption studies were made in adult women (ten women/study). Fe absorption was based on the erythrocyte incorporation of stable isotopes (57Fe and 58Fe) 14 d after the intake of labelled test meals of infant cereal (study 1) or yoghurt drink (study 2). Each test meal was fortified with 5 mg Fe as ferrous sulfate or micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate. Results are presented as geometric means. There was no statistically significant difference between Fe absorption from micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate- and ferrous sulfate-fortified infant cereal (3Ā·4 and 4Ā·1 % respectively; P=0Ā·24) and yoghurt drink (3Ā·9 and 4Ā·2 % respectively; P=0Ā·72). The results of the present studies show that micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate is as well absorbed as ferrous sulfate in adults.
