Two genera and species of Isopoda new to the fauna of the northern Arabian Sea
The paper is based on the new records of two genera - Lanocira Hansen and Paranthura Bate and Westwood and species L. gardineri Stebbing and P. latipes Barnard from the rocky intertidal zone of Karachi coast. Synonymes, diagnoses and geographical distribution of the genera are given. A list of known species of the genus Lanocira is provided. Both the species are described and illustrated in detail
Conventional Weight-Based versus Low-Dose Regimen of Heparin Administration to Achieve Target Activated Clotting Time on Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Pakistani Population
Objective: A weight-based dose of heparin is calculated to achieve target ACT (Activated clotting time) for establishing CPB (cardiopulmonary bypass). Whether a target ACT can be achieved with lower dose of heparin in Pakistani population was the aim of this study.
Methodology: The cross-sectional comparative study was conducted at Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, Department of Cardiac Surgery from 1st January 2019 to 1st January 2020. Three hundred thirty-six (336) patients undergoing elective open-heart surgeries on CPB were included in this study. Patients receiving weight-based heparin dose were placed in Group-A, while those on low-dose heparin were placed in Group-B. ACT was considered to have reached the target value in range of 400-480 seconds, values between 481-1500 seconds were considered excessive, whereas ACT of >1500 was regarded as potentially high-risk for peri-operative bleeding .
Results: 14.1% (n= 28) of Group-A patients achieved target ACT, whereas 58.3% (n=116) exceeded the target of 480. In 25.1% (n=50), ACT values were beyond the measuring capacity of the assay machine i.e. >1500. Only 2.5% (n=5) required additional dosage of heparin. Target ACT in Group B was achieved in 19.7% (n= 27), 55.5% (n=76) had excessive ACT values, whereas in 16.8% (n= 23), it was >1500. 9.5% (n=13) required an additional dosage of Heparin.
Conclusion: In Pakistani population, a target ACT can be achieved with significantly lower dose than the conventional weight-based heparin dose. Larger studies, preferably randomized controlled trials are needed to determine the optimal heparin dose calculation for safe anti-coagulation during CPB
Compact Broadband Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna
In this paper, using two or more U-slots which are mutually coupled, we are further able to extend the bandwidth achievable by single U-slot. Our Proposed design on 1.6 mm high FR4 substrate is 69 mm X 62 mm (L X W) in size which is vary compact, low profile and conformable. We have chosen licence free band from 7.6 GHz to 9.2 GHz which has not yet been targeted by any commercial product till now. We expect major wave of wireless product for Biomedical, Industrial, Defence and IOT applications in this frequency band in years to come. Our design achieves 1.6 GHz (20%) bandwidth around 8.3 GHz with fairly good gain achievable in low profile substrate. In our design we have introduce Microstrip ring to improve directivity of a antenna. The measured and simulated response shows close agreement thus validating our design
Characterization of Malaysian Wild Bananas Based on Anthocyanins
The male buds of 16 Musa species (Musaceae) populations were investigated by HPLC for the occurrence of anthocyanins. The investigation was based on the presence of 6 anthocyanins. The 16 Musa samples could be classified into three distinct species i.e. Musa acuminata, Musa violascens and Musa balbisiana. Musa acuminata could be divided into two subspecies : malaccensis (lowland) and tmncata (highland) according to their constituents and content of major anthocyanins. No variation was observed in the composition of the anthocyanins of Kedah type ssp. siamea and Selangor types ssp. malaccensis. The classification of M. acuminata into two subspecies based on anthocyanin data further supported the current taxonomic grouping of the species
Morphological Characterization of Malaysian Wild Banana Musa Acuminata
Fourteen populations of Musa acuminata ranging from populations in the lowlands of northern (ssp. siamea) to central Malaysian region (ssp. malaccensis) and highland banana (ssp. truncata) were characterized based on chromosome number and 46 morphological characters. A large amount of variation was observed within the populations. However, only highland bananas appeared morphologically distinct. Lowland populations both from northern and central Malaysia were found to be overlapping and no distinguishing pattern was observed. The morphological characters found variable within these populations were related to developmental changes and mutations. The results obtained in this study were not revolutionary. However, the survey of a large number of characters treated with multivariate techniques further sharpened the existing groupings of the Musa acuminata subspecies
Purification and characterization of thermostable chitinase from a novel S. maltophilia strain
Aims: The presents study examines the purification and characterization of a chitinase from S. maltophilia SJ602 strainisolated from a soil sample collected from Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.Methodology and Results: The purification steps included chitin affinity using colloidal chitin as the affinity matrix andcolumn chromatography using Sephadex G-100. The chitinase was purified to 66 fold having a yield of 17%. The molecular weight of the chitinase was found to be around 29 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The pH and temperature optima of the purified chitinase were found to be at pH 5.5 and60 °C, respectively. Conclusion, Significance and Impact of the study: Besides showing a significant yield, the enzyme has a highthermal stability which has its applicability in the recycling of chitin waste
