Development, Survival and Phenology of the Sweetclover Weevil Parasitoid, \u3ci\u3ePygostolus Falcatus\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)
Biennial sweetclovers were widely used for soil improvement and as for- ages in the first half of the 1900s. The introduction of the sweetclover weevil, Sitona cylindricollis, caused a drastic decline in sweetclover acreage. In North Dakota, yellow sweetclover, Melilotus officinalis, is still the legume of choice on organic farms. In an effort to control the weevil, the thelyotokous parasitoid Pygostolus falcatus was imported. Parasitoids were studied for temperature-dependent development, and adult longevity as influenced by temperature and availability of provisions. Development from egg to adult at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C was 58, 28, 22 and 21 d, respectively. No parasitoids were reared out at 10°C, although diapausing first instars were present. Longevity of adult parasitoids provided honey, water, sweetclover and sweet- clover weevils at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C was 29, 22, 12 and 6 d, respectively. Adults provided the following combinations of provisions at 25°C survived for: nothing-2 d; water-2 d; honey-4 d; honey and water - 6 d; honey, water and sweetclover - 11 d; honey, water, sweetclover and hosts - 12 d. Field cage releases and a degree-day model developed for the parasitoid demonstrated that poor synchrony between P. falcatus and the sweetclover weevil hinders its usefulness as a biological control agent
Polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry: Pauli blocking vs. the pion cloud
The flavor asymmetry of the unpolarized antiquark distributions in the
proton, dbar(x) - ubar(x) > 0, can qualitatively be explained either by Pauli
blocking by the valence quarks, or as an effect of the pion cloud of the
nucleon. In contrast, predictions for the polarized asymmetry Delta_ubar(x) -
Delta_dbar(x) based on rho meson contributions disagree even in sign with the
Pauli blocking picture. We show that in the meson cloud picture a large
positive Delta_ubar(x) - Delta_dbar(x) is obtained from pi-N - sigma-N
interference-type contributions, as suggested by chiral symmetry. This effect
restores the equivalence of the 'quark' and 'meson' descriptions also in the
polarized case.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 eps figure
On integrability of the differential constraints arising from the singularity analysis
Integrability of the differential constraints arising from the singularity
analysis of two (1+1)-dimensional second-order evolution equations is studied.
Two nonlinear ordinary differential equations are obtained in this way, which
are integrable by quadratures in spite of very complicated branching of their
solutions.Comment: arxiv version is already offcia

Communications systems technology assessment study. Volume 2: Results
The cost and technology characteristics are examined for providing special satellite services at UHF, 2.5 GHz, and 14/12 GHz. Considered are primarily health, educational, informational and emergency disaster type services. The total cost of each configuration including space segment, earth station, installation operation and maintenance was optimized to reduce the user's total annual cost and establish preferred equipment performance parameters. Technology expected to be available between now and 1985 is identified and comparisons made between selected alternatives. A key element of the study is a survey of earth station equipment updating past work in the field, providing new insight into technology, and evaluating production and test methods that can reduce costs in large production runs. Various satellite configurations were examined. The cost impact of rain attenuation at Ku-band was evaluated. The factors affecting the ultimate capacity achievable with the available orbital arc and available bandwidth were analyzed
Ratchet effect in dc SQUIDs
We analyzed voltage rectification for dc SQUIDs biased with ac current with
zero mean value. We demonstrate that the reflection symmetry in the
2-dimensional SQUID potential is broken by an applied flux and with appropriate
asymmetries in the dc SQUID. Depending on the type of asymmetry, we obtain a
rocking or a simultaneously rocking and flashing ratchet, the latter showing
multiple sign reversals in the mean voltage with increasing amplitude of the ac
current. Our experimental results are in agreement with numerical solutions of
the Langevin equations for the asymmetric dc SQUID.Comment: 10 pages including 5 Postscript figure
Phase space dynamics of overdamped quantum systems
The phase space dynamics of dissipative quantum systems in strongly condensed
phase is considered. Based on the exact path integral approach it is shown that
the Wigner transform of the reduced density matrix obeys a time evolution
equation of Fokker-Planck type valid from high down to very low temperatures.
The effect of quantum fluctuations is discussed and the accuracy of these
findings is tested against exact data for a harmonic system.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Euro. Phys. Let
