Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography of extended colloidal networks in food emulsions
As a main structural level in colloidal food materials, extended colloidal
networks are important for texture and rheology. By obtaining the 3D
microstructure of the network, macroscopic mechanical properties of the
material can be inferred. However, this approach is hampered by the lack of
suitable non-destructive 3D imaging techniques with submicron resolution.
We present results of quantitative ptychographic X-ray computed tomography
applied to a palm kernel oil based oil-in-water emulsion. The measurements were
carried out at ambient pressure and temperature. The 3D structure of the
extended colloidal network of fat globules was obtained with a resolution of
around 300 nm. Through image analysis of the network structure, the fat globule
size distribution was computed and compared to previous findings. In further
support, the reconstructed electron density values were within 4% of reference
values.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Food Structur
Observations of the Crab Nebula with H.E.S.S. Phase II
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) phase I instrument was an
array of four mirror area Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov
Telescopes (IACTs) that has very successfully mapped the sky at photon energies
above GeV. Recently, a telescope was added to
the centre of the existing array, which can be operated either in standalone
mode or jointly with the four smaller telescopes. The large telescope lowers
the energy threshold for gamma-ray observations to several tens of GeV, making
the array sensitive at energies where the Fermi-LAT instrument runs out of
statistics. At the same time, the new telescope makes the H.E.S.S. phase II
instrument. This is the first hybrid IACT array, as it operates telescopes of
different size (and hence different trigger rates) and different field of view.
In this contribution we present results of H.E.S.S. phase II observations of
the Crab Nebula, compare them to earlier observations, and evaluate the
performance of the new instrument with Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference

Synthesizing Program Input Grammars
We present an algorithm for synthesizing a context-free grammar encoding the
language of valid program inputs from a set of input examples and blackbox
access to the program. Our algorithm addresses shortcomings of existing grammar
inference algorithms, which both severely overgeneralize and are prohibitively
slow. Our implementation, GLADE, leverages the grammar synthesized by our
algorithm to fuzz test programs with structured inputs. We show that GLADE
substantially increases the incremental coverage on valid inputs compared to
two baseline fuzzers
Base de dados geogråficos do "Corredor de Nacala", Moçambique.
The demand for agricultural products has been increasing in all countries in the last decades. Together with the decrease in natural resources and the possible impacts to agriculture caused by climatic changes, this aspect has aroused concerns in terms of the development of new global agricultural frontiers. In this context, some regions in Africa have been drawing attention from the world due to their edaphoclimatic conditions, which are favorable for agricultural development. The vision of a modern and dynamic agriculture must be based on the capacity of applying appropriate knowledge and technologies to the environment, as well as to the countryÂŽs economic and social situation. Such condition demands the installment of an efficient agricultural innovation system composed by a technical and operational structure which is able to support the agricultural industry along all its stages. Thus, this article aims at presenting some contributions to the formatting of a geographic database of natural resources for the Nacala Corridor, Mozambique. Geotechnology instruments were used for planning, generating and maintaining the accomplished database's data and information. This database will subsidize the integrated management of the region's geographic space from spatial information about landscape, soil, climate, land use, and land cover, thus subsidizing the management of the natural resources and of Mozambique's agricultural sustainability as well
Splenic pooling and loss of VCAM-1 causes an engraftment defect in patients with myelofibrosis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Myelofibrosis is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that results in cytopenia, bone marrow fibrosis and extramedullary hematopoiesis. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only curative treatment but is associated with a risk of delayed engraftment and graft failure. In this study, patients with myelofibrosis (n=31) and acute myeloid leukemia (n=31) were analyzed for time to engraftment, graft failure and engraftment-related factors. Early and late neutrophil engraftment and late thrombocyte engraftment were significantly delayed in patients with myelofibrosis as compared to acute myeloid leukemia, and graft failure only occurred in myelofibrosis (6%). Only spleen size had a significant influence on engraftment efficiency in myelofibrosis patients. To analyze the cause for the engraftment defect, clearance of hematopoietic stem cells from peripheral blood was measured and immunohistological staining of bone marrow sections was performed. Numbers of circulating CD34+ were significantly reduced at early time points in myelofibrosis patients, whereas CD34+CD38- and colony-forming cells showed no significant difference in clearance. Staining of bone marrow sections for homing proteins revealed a loss of VCAM-1 in myelofibrosis with a corresponding significant increase in the level of soluble VCAM-1 within the peripheral blood. In conclusion, our data suggest that reduced engraftment and graft failure in myelofibrosis patients is caused by an early pooling of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells in the spleen and a bone marrow homing defect caused by the loss of VCAM-1. Improved engraftment in myelofibrosis might be achieved by approaches that reduce spleen size and cleavage of VCAM-1 in these patients prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
C-Band All-Sky Survey: A First Look at the Galaxy
We present an analysis of the diffuse emission at 5 GHz in the first quadrant
of the Galactic plane using two months of preliminary intensity data taken with
the C-Band All Sky Survey (C-BASS) northern instrument at the Owens Valley
Radio Observatory, California. Combining C-BASS maps with ancillary data to
make temperature-temperature plots we find synchrotron spectral indices of
between 0.408 GHz and 5 GHz and between 1.420 GHz and 5 GHz for ,
. Through the subtraction of a radio recombination
line (RRL) free-free template we determine the synchrotron spectral index in
the Galactic plane () to be between
0.408 GHz and 5 GHz, with a contribution of per cent from free-free
emission at 5\,GHz. These results are consistent with previous low frequency
measurements in the Galactic plane. By including C-BASS data in spectral fits
we demonstrate the presence of anomalous microwave emission (AME) associated
with the HII complexes W43, W44 and W47 near 30 GHz, at 4.4 sigma, 3.1 sigma
and 2.5 sigma respectively. The CORNISH VLA 5 GHz source catalogue rules out
the possibility that the excess emission detected around 30\;GHz may be due to
ultra-compact HII regions. Diffuse AME was also identified at a 4 sigma level
within , between 5
GHz and 22.8 GHz.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS, referee's corrections made,

Dynamic Many-Body Theory. II. Dynamics of Strongly Correlated Fermi Fluids
We develop a systematic theory of multi-particle excitations in strongly
interacting Fermi systems. Our work is the generalization of the time-honored
work by Jackson, Feenberg, and Campbell for bosons, that provides, in its most
advanced implementation, quantitative predictions for the dynamic structure
function in the whole experimentally accessible energy/momentum regime. Our
view is that the same physical effects -- namely fluctuations of the wave
function at an atomic length scale -- are responsible for the correct
energetics of the excitations in both Bose and Fermi fluids. Besides a
comprehensive derivation of the fermion version of the theory and discussion of
the approximations made, we present results for homogeneous He-3 and electrons
in three dimensions. We find indeed a significant lowering of the zero sound
mode in He-3 and a broadening of the collective mode due to the coupling to
particle-hole excitations in good agreement with experiments. The most visible
effect in electronic systems is the appearance of a ``double-plasmon''
excitation.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
