Assessing the Impact of Blood Pressure on Cardiac Function Using Interpretable Biomarkers and Variational Autoencoders
Maintaining good cardiac function for as long as possible is a major concern
for healthcare systems worldwide and there is much interest in learning more
about the impact of different risk factors on cardiac health. The aim of this
study is to analyze the impact of systolic blood pressure (SBP) on cardiac
function while preserving the interpretability of the model using known
clinical biomarkers in a large cohort of the UK Biobank population. We propose
a novel framework that combines deep learning based estimation of interpretable
clinical biomarkers from cardiac cine MR data with a variational autoencoder
(VAE). The VAE architecture integrates a regression loss in the latent space,
which enables the progression of cardiac health with SBP to be learnt. Results
on 3,600 subjects from the UK Biobank show that the proposed model allows us to
gain important insight into the deterioration of cardiac function with
increasing SBP, identify key interpretable factors involved in this process,
and lastly exploit the model to understand patterns of positive and adverse
adaptation of cardiac function
Differential Forms on Log Canonical Spaces
The present paper is concerned with differential forms on log canonical
varieties. It is shown that any p-form defined on the smooth locus of a variety
with canonical or klt singularities extends regularly to any resolution of
singularities. In fact, a much more general theorem for log canonical pairs is
established. The proof relies on vanishing theorems for log canonical varieties
and on methods of the minimal model program. In addition, a theory of
differential forms on dlt pairs is developed. It is shown that many of the
fundamental theorems and techniques known for sheaves of logarithmic
differentials on smooth varieties also hold in the dlt setting.
Immediate applications include the existence of a pull-back map for reflexive
differentials, generalisations of Bogomolov-Sommese type vanishing results, and

A sociological dilemma: race, segregation, and US sociology
US sociology has been historically segregated in that, at least until the 1960s, there were two distinct institutionally organized traditions of sociological thought – one black and one white. For the most part, however, dominant historiographies have been silent on that segregation and, at best, reproduce it when addressing the US sociological tradition. This is evident in the rarity with which scholars such as WEB Du Bois, E Franklin Frazier, Oliver Cromwell Cox, or other ‘African American Pioneers of Sociology’, as Saint-Arnaud calls them, are presented as core sociological voices within histories of the discipline. This article addresses the absence of African American sociologists from the US sociological canon and, further, discusses the implications of this absence for our understanding of core sociological concepts. With regard to the latter, the article focuses in particular on the debates around equality and emancipation and discusses the ways in which our understanding of these concepts could be extended by taking into account the work of African American sociologists and their different interpretations of core themes
Transcribing screen-capture data : the process of developing a transcription system for multi-modal text-based data
Transcription of audio data is widespread in qualitative research, with transcription of video data also becoming common. Online data is now being collected using screen-capture or video software, which then needs transcribing. This paper draws together literature on transcription of spoken interaction and highlights key transcription principles, namely reflecting the methodological approach, readability, accessibility, and usability. These principles provide a framework for developing a transcription system for multi-modal text-based data. The process of developing a transcription system for data from Facebook chat is described and reflected on. Key issues in the transcription of multi-modal text-based data are discussed, and examples provided of how these were overcome when developing the transcription system
Strengthening clinical cancer research in the United Kingdom
BACKGROUND: In 1999, 270 000 cases of cancer were registered in the United Kingdom, placing a large burden on the NHS. Cancer outcome data in 1999 suggested that UK survival rates were poorer than most other European countries. In the same year, a Department of Health review noted that clinical trials accrual was poor (<3.5% of incident cases) and hypothesised that increasing research activity might improve outcomes and reduce the variability of outcomes across England. Thus, the National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) was established to increase participation in cancer clinical research.METHODS: The NCRN was established in 2001 to provide a robust infrastructure for cancer clinical research and improvements in patient care. Remit of NCRN is to coordinate, support and deliver cancer clinical research through the provision of research support staff across England. The NCRN works closely with similar networks in Scotland, Wales and the Northern Ireland. A key aim of NCRN is to improve the speed of research and this was also assessed by comparing the speed of study delivery of a subset of cancer studies opening before and after NCRN was established.RESULTS: Patient recruitment increased through NCRN, with almost 32 000 (12% of annual incident cases) cancer patients being recruited each year. Study delivery has improved, with more studies meeting the recruitment target - 74% compared with 39% before NCRN was established.CONCLUSION: The coordinated approach to cancer clinical research has demonstrated increased accrual, wide participation and successful trial delivery, which should lead to improved outcomes and care.
