Performance of a ballute decelerator towed behind a jet airplane
An F-104B airplane was modified to investigate the drag and stability characteristics of a ballute decelerator in the wake of an asymmetrical airplane. Decelerator deployments were initiated at a Mach number of 1.3 and an altitude of 15,240 meters (50,000 feet) and terminated when the airplane had decelerated to a Mach number of 0.5. The flight tests indicated that the decelerator had a short inflation time with relatively small opening forces. The drag levels attained with the subject decelerator were less than those obtained with other high-speed decelerators behind a symmetrical tow vehicle. The ballute demonstrated good stability characteristics behind the testbed airplane
Feasibility of an Incoherent-scatter Radar Aboard the Space Shuttle
The results of a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of conducting an incoherent scatter radar experiment on board the space shuttle are presented. The results indicate that such an experiment is technically feasible. The more difficult questions to answer are whether the system can be made flexible enough to justify the problems and costs involved. The design parameters and the tradeoffs that are available in the consideration of these questions are evaluated. Some of the more serious limitations pertain to: (1) the presence of ground clutter and F region auroral clutter; (2) available average power; (3) weight and volume associated with required antenna size, transmitter, and energy storage devices; and (4) antenna breakdown associated with high power transmitter problems
Hydrogen in Type Ic Supernovae?
By definition, a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) does not have conspicuous lines of
hydrogen or helium in its optical spectrum. SNe Ic usually are modelled in
terms of the gravitational collapse of bare carbon-oxygen cores. We consider
the possibility that the spectra of ordinary (SN 1994I-like) SNe Ic have been
misinterpreted, and that SNe Ic eject hydrogen. An absorption feature usually
attributed to a blend of Si II 6355 and C II 6580 may be produced by H-alpha.
If SN 1994I-like SNe Ic eject hydrogen, the possibility that hypernova (SN
1998bw-like) SNe Ic, some of which are associated with gamma-ray bursts, also
eject hydrogen should be considered. The implications of hydrogen for SN Ic

Twisted mass chiral perturbation theory for 2+1+1 quark flavours
We present results for the masses of pseudoscalar mesons in twisted mass
lattice QCD with a degenerate doublet of u and d quarks and a non-degenerate
doublet of s and c quarks in the framework of next-to-leading order chiral
perturbation theory, including lattice effects up to O(a^2). The masses depend
on the two twist angles for the light and heavy sectors. For maximal twist in
both sectors, O(a)-improvement is explicitly exhibited. The mixing of
flavour-neutral mesons is also discussed, and results in the literature for the
case of degenerate s and c quarks are corrected.Comment: LaTeX2e, 12 pages, corrected typo
Body Language Without a Body: Nonverbal Communication in Technology Mediated Settings
Humans are wired for face-to-face interaction because this was the only possible and available setting during the long evolutionary process that has led to Homo Sapiens. At the moment an increasingly significant fraction of our interactions take place in technology mediated settings, it is important to investigate how such a wiring - mainly corresponding to neural processes - reacts and adapts to them. This talk focuses in particular on how nonverbal communication - one of the main channels through which people convey socially and psychologically relevant information - plays a role in settings where natural nonverbal cues (facial expressions, vocalizations, gestures, etc.) are no longer available. Such an issue is important not only from a technological point of view (it can help to design interaction and communication technologies that better address human needs), but also from a societal one (it can help to understand major phenomena such as cyberbullyism and virality)
A Study of Compact Radio Sources in Nearby Face-on Spiral Galaxies. II. Multiwavelength Analyses of Sources in M51
We report the analysis of deep radio observations of the interacting galaxy
system M51 from the Very Large Array, with the goal of understanding the nature
of the population of compact radio sources in nearby spiral galaxies. We detect
107 compact radio sources, 64% of which have optical counterparts in a deep
H Hubble Space Telescope image. Thirteen of the radio sources have
X-ray counterparts from a {\em Chandra} observation of M51. We find that six of
the associated H sources are young supernova remnants with resolved
shells. Most of the SNRs exhibit steep radio continuum spectral indices
onsistent with synchrotron emission. We detect emission from the Type Ic SN
1994I nearly a decade after explosion: the emission (Jy
beam at 20 cm, Jy beam at 6cm,
) is consistent with light curve models for Type Ib/Ic
supernovae. We detect X-ray emission from the supernova, however no optical
counterpart is present. We report on the analysis of the Seyfert 2 nucleus in
this galaxy, including the evidence for bipolar outflows from the central black

High frequency dynamics in a monatomic glass
The high frequency dynamics of glassy Selenium has been studied by Inelastic
X-ray Scattering at beamline BL35XU (SPring-8). The high quality of the data
allows one to pinpoint the existence of a dispersing acoustic mode for
wavevectors () of nm, helping to clarify a previous
contradiction between experimental and numerical results. The sound velocity
shows a positive dispersion, exceeding the hydrodynamic value by 10%
at nm. The dependence of the sound attenuation
, reported for other glasses, is found to be the low- limit of a
more general law which applies also to the
