    An atlas of 1975 GEOS-3 radar altimeter data for hurricane/tropical disturbance studies, volume 1

    Geographic locations of 1975 hurricanes and other tropical disturbances were correlated with the closest approaching orbits of the GEOS-3 satellite and its radar altimeter. The disturbance locations and altimeter data were gathered for a seven-month period beginning with GEOS-3 launch in mid-April 1975. Areas of coverage were the Atlantic Ocean, the Carribean, the Gulf of Mexico, the west coast of the continental United States, and the central and western Pacific Ocean. Volume 1 contains disturbance coverage data for the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Eastern Pacific Ocean. Central and Western Pacific coverage is documented in Volume II

    Analysis of recent type Ia supernova data based on evolving dark energy models

    We study characters of recent type Ia supernova (SNIa) data using evolving dark energy models with changing equation of state parameter w. We consider sudden-jump approximation of w for some chosen redshift spans with double transitions, and constrain these models based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method using the SNIa data (Constitution, Union, Union2) together with baryon acoustic oscillation A parameter and cosmic microwave background shift parameter in a flat background. In the double-transition model the Constitution data shows deviation outside 1 sigma from LCDM model at low (z < 0.2) and middle (0.2 < z < 0.4) redshift bins whereas no such deviations are noticeable in the Union and Union2 data. By analyzing the Union members in the Constitution set, however, we show that the same difference is actually due to different calibration of the same Union sample in the Constitution set, and is not due to new data added in the Constitution set. All detected deviations are within 2 sigma from the LCDM world model. From the LCDM mock data analysis, we quantify biases in the dark energy equation of state parameters induced by insufficient data with inhomogeneous distribution of data points in the redshift space and distance modulus errors. We demonstrate that location of peak in the distribution of arithmetic means (computed from the MCMC chain for each mock data) behaves as an unbiased estimator for the average bias, which is valid even for non-symmetric likelihood distributions.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, published in the Phys.     An Efficient Block Circulant Preconditioner For Simulating Fracture Using Large Fuse Networks

    {\it Critical slowing down} associated with the iterative solvers close to the critical point often hinders large-scale numerical simulation of fracture using discrete lattice networks. This paper presents a block circlant preconditioner for iterative solvers for the simulation of progressive fracture in disordered, quasi-brittle materials using large discrete lattice networks. The average computational cost of the present alorithm per iteration is O(rslogs)+delopsO(rs log s) + delops, where the stiffness matrix A{\bf A} is partioned into rr-by-rr blocks such that each block is an ss-by-ss matrix, and delopsdelops represents the operational count associated with solving a block-diagonal matrix with rr-by-rr dense matrix blocks. This algorithm using the block circulant preconditioner is faster than the Fourier accelerated preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm, and alleviates the {\it critical slowing down} that is especially severe close to the critical point. Numerical results using random resistor networks substantiate the efficiency of the present algorithm.Comment: 16 pages including 2 figure

    Reported Earnings and Analyst Forecasts as Competing Sources of Information: A New Approach

    We study information flows between earnings and forecasts, using suitably adapted Granger causality tests. This approach complements existing cross-sectional studies by abstracting from stock market reactions to information, and focussing on dynamic interactions between information flows instead. We find bi-directional causality in timeseries of analyst earnings forecasts and reported earnings, supporting our expectation that forecasts contribute to information that is reflected in future reports. Further, our evidence of feedback suggests that past reports and forecasts are both reflected in future forecasts, implying that the information in reports has inherent value, and that forecasts do not fully substitute for reports.

    Effects of f(R) Model on the Dynamical Instability of Expansionfree Gravitational Collapse

    Dark energy models based on f(R) theory have been extensively studied in literature to realize the late time acceleration. In this paper, we have chosen a viable f(R) model and discussed its effects on the dynamical instability of expansionfree fluid evolution generating a central vacuum cavity. For this purpose, contracted Bianchi identities are obtained for both the usual matter as well as dark source. The term dark source is named to the higher order curvature corrections arising from f(R) gravity. The perturbation scheme is applied and different terms belonging to Newtonian and post Newtonian regimes are identified. It is found that instability range of expansionfree fluid on external boundary as well as on internal vacuum cavity is independent of adiabatic index Γ\Gamma but depends upon the density profile, pressure anisotropy and f(R) model.Comment: 26 pages, no figure. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1108.266

    Conservation of statistical results under the reduction of pair-contact interactions to solvation interactions

    We show that the hydrophobicity of sequences is the leading term in Miyazawa-Jernigan interactions. Being the source of additive (solvation) terms in pair-contact interactions, they were used to reduce the energy parameters while resulting in a clear vector manipulation of energy. The reduced (additive) potential performs considerably successful in predicting the statistical properties of arbitrary structures. The evaluated designabilities of the structures by both models are highly correlated. Suggesting geometrically non-degenerate vectors (structures) as protein-like structures, the additive model is a powerful tool for protein design. Moreover, a crossing point in the log-linear diagram of designability-ranking shows that about 1/e of the structures have designabilities above the average, independent on the used model.Comment: 17 pages and 10 figure

    Thermal Casimir force between nanostructured surfaces

    We present detailed calculations for the Casimir force between a plane and a nanostructured surface at finite temperature in the framework of the scattering theory. We then study numerically the effect of finite temperature as a function of the grating parameters and the separation distance. We also infer non-trivial geometrical effects on the Casimir interaction via a comparison with the proximity force approximation. Finally, we compare our calculations with data from experiments performed with nanostructured surfaces

    Synchrotron brightness distribution of turbulent radio jets

    Radio jets are considered as turbulent mixing regions and it is proposed that the essential small scale viscous dissipation in these jets is by emission of MHD waves and by their subsequent strong damping due, at least partly, to gyro-resonant acceleration of supra-thermal particles. A formula relating the synchrotron surface brightness of a radio jet to the turbulent power input is deduced from physical postulates, and is tested against the data for NGC315 and 3C31 (NGC383). The predicted brightness depends essentially on the collimation behavior of the jet, and, to a lesser extent, on the CH picture of a 'high' nozzle with accelerating flow. The conditions for forming a large scale jet at a high nozzle from a much smaller scale jet are discussed. The effect of entrainment on the prediction is discussed with the use of similarity solutions. Although entrainment is inevitably associated with the turbulent jet, it may or may not be a dominant factor depending on the ambient density profile

    Effects of Electromagnetic Field on the Dynamical Instability of Cylindrical Collapse

    The objective of this paper is to discuss the dynamical instability in the context of Newtonian and post Newtonian regimes. For this purpose, we consider non-viscous heat conducting charged isotropic fluid as a collapsing matter with cylindrical symmetry. Darmois junction conditions are formulated. The perturbation scheme is applied to investigate the influence of dissipation and electromagnetic field on the dynamical instability. We conclude that the adiabatic index Γ\Gamma has smaller value for such a fluid in cylindrically symmetric than isotropic sphere
